YouTube Video Aspect Ratios: Sizes for Every Format

Use 16:9 for standard YouTube videos, square or vertical for eligible Shorts, and separate recommended dimensions for thumbnails.

For a standard YouTube video, use a 16:9 frame—1920×1080 is a clear default. For a Short, use a square or vertical frame; YouTube does not prescribe one universal pixel resolution for every Short. Keep thumbnail dimensions separate: YouTube recommends 16:9 for standard thumbnails and 9:16 for Shorts thumbnails.

What is the best aspect ratio for a YouTube video?

For standard widescreen playback, choose 16:9. YouTube calls 16:9 the standard aspect ratio on a computer, and lists these 16:9 video resolutions:

Resolution Common label Aspect ratio
1280×720 720p 16:9
1920×1080 1080p 16:9
2560×1440 1440p 16:9
3840×2160 4K 16:9

These are examples of frame dimensions, not a requirement to export at the highest resolution. Pick a resolution that suits your footage and production workflow. YouTube’s player adapts to the uploaded video’s shape and the viewer’s device. YouTube’s resolution and aspect-ratio guidance advises against adding padding or black bars directly to the video.

What aspect ratio should YouTube Shorts be?

Use a square (1:1) or vertical frame for a Short. YouTube’s guidance does not establish one mandatory pixel size for every Short, so don’t treat a particular vertical resolution as a platform-wide requirement.

For standard channels, YouTube says videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024, with a square or vertical aspect ratio and a duration of up to three minutes will be categorized as Shorts. The shape alone does not determine eligibility: duration, upload date, and channel context matter. Official Artist Channels have a separate transition date described in YouTube’s three-minute Shorts guidance. You can also check YouTube’s computer upload instructions for Shorts.

Square or vertical?

  • Square (1:1): A supported Shorts shape. The cited guidance does not give a universal square pixel dimension.
  • Vertical (commonly 9:16): A natural fit for portrait footage and mobile viewing. YouTube refers to vertical format for Shorts without prescribing one pixel dimension for every upload.

On Android, the YouTube player adapts to vertical, square, and horizontal video; portrait playback becomes taller for square and vertical videos. See YouTube’s Android resolution and aspect-ratio guidance.

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

A thumbnail is a separate image asset, not the video frame. YouTube recommends a 16:9 aspect ratio for standard video thumbnails and 9:16 for Shorts thumbnails, with these suggested resolutions:

Thumbnail type Recommended ratio Suggested resolution
Standard video 16:9 3840×2160
Shorts 9:16 2160×3840

These are thumbnail recommendations, not video-export dimensions. Check YouTube’s custom thumbnail guidance for the image asset.

How to choose dimensions and export cleanly

  1. Decide where the video belongs. Use 16:9 for a standard widescreen video. Choose square or vertical for a Short that meets the applicable Shorts criteria.
  2. Match the canvas to the footage. Avoid cropping important content just to force footage into a different shape. YouTube’s player adapts to square and vertical uploads as well as widescreen video.
  3. Set the export dimensions for the chosen shape. For 16:9, examples include 1920×1080 and 3840×2160. For square or vertical video, select dimensions that preserve that shape; the cited Shorts guidance does not mandate one pixel size.
  4. Do not add black bars as padding. Keep the video itself in its intended frame shape rather than embedding bars to imitate another format.
  5. Export the thumbnail separately. Use the recommended thumbnail ratio for the destination: 16:9 for standard videos or 9:16 for Shorts.

Aspect ratio describes the shape of the frame; resolution describes its pixel dimensions. A 1920×1080 frame is 16:9, while a different 16:9 resolution keeps the same shape at a different pixel count. When preparing a video file, YouTube separately recommends uploading in the frame rate in which it was recorded; its encoding settings cover technical export details beyond aspect ratio.

Common sizing mistakes

  • Using thumbnail dimensions as video dimensions: Thumbnail recommendations apply to image assets. Choose the video frame separately.
  • Assuming every Short must use one exact resolution: YouTube’s cited Shorts guidance specifies square or vertical shape and duration criteria, not one universal pixel size.
  • Adding bars to make a video appear widescreen: YouTube says the player adapts to the uploaded shape and advises against padding or black bars baked into the video.
  • Choosing based on pixels alone: Confirm the aspect ratio as well as the resolution. A larger pixel count does not make a square or vertical frame widescreen.
  • Treating every square or vertical upload as a Short: For standard channels, the stated classification rule also includes a maximum three-minute duration and the upload date.

If you also run a YouTube channel around the clock using uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping a prerecorded stream live; it does not change how you should size a standard upload, Short, or thumbnail.
