For a common SDR 1080p30 H.264 feed, a practical starting profile is libx264, a 60-frame GOP, CBR-style rate control around YouTube’s recommended 10 Mbps video bitrate, and RTMPS where your FFmpeg build supports it. Test the feed in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it.
First, choose the right kind of playlist
A normal YouTube playlist contains videos you uploaded to YouTube. It does not need FFmpeg or a live stream key. This guide is for a different setup: FFmpeg reads local animated video and sends an encoded live feed to YouTube Live. The order, transitions, looping, and handoff between files are separate decisions from the encoder profile.
YouTube’s live encoder settings are a useful ingest target, but they do not prescribe how your local files should be joined or supervised. The command below demonstrates looping one input file; it is not a universal playlist builder.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together
YouTube’s current H.264 ingest recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate. They are targets for incoming live video, not a guarantee of a particular visual result. Pick a profile your connection can sustain steadily, and avoid changing resolution or frame rate without recalculating the bitrate and GOP.

| Output profile | YouTube H.264 bitrate recommendation | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | A lower-bandwidth option or animation that does not need the additional pixel detail of 1080p. |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | A common balance for detailed animation and a stable upload connection. |
| 1080p60 | 14 Mbps | Motion that benefits from 60 fps, provided the source and upload can support it. |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | Higher frame rate at 720p when motion matters more than 1080p detail. |
These figures come from YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed 2026-10-03. Animation is not automatically cheap to encode: fine line art, rapid motion, noise, and fades affect compression differently. There is no basis here for a universal animation-specific bitrate reduction. Choose based on representative footage and verify the delivered stream.
Set keyframes and rate control
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. In FFmpeg with libx264, -g sets the maximum GOP size in frames. At 30 fps, -g 60 corresponds to about two seconds; at 60 fps, use -g 120 for the same interval. Recalculate for any other output frame rate.
YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR) for live ingest. In this example, -b:v sets the target, while -maxrate and -bufsize constrain rate variation. The values should be chosen consistently with the intended profile and then checked in the actual feed; they do not make an unstable internet connection reliable.

Example: loop one animated video to YouTube Live
This starting-point command reads one file in real time, loops it, encodes H.264 video at 1080p30 settings, and sends an FLV stream to an RTMPS URL. Replace the input path and provide your YouTube stream URL and key through environment variables. The sample assumes the input contains audio and that the installed FFmpeg build supports libx264.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "input.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30
-b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "$RTMPS_URL/$STREAM_KEY"
- Confirm the source. Replace
input.mp4with the actual file path. Inspect its frame rate, dimensions, aspect ratio, and audio before choosing output settings. Keep the source aspect ratio unless you deliberately add crop or padding filters. - Set the ingest endpoint and credential. In YouTube Live Control Room, configure the stream and obtain the stream URL and stream key. Put them into
RTMPS_URLandSTREAM_KEYin your shell environment using your platform’s syntax. Do not paste a real key into a public script, log, screenshot, or command shared with others. - Adjust for the chosen output. Change
-r,-g, bitrate, maximum rate, and buffer for the selected resolution and frame rate. The example uses 1080p30’s 10 Mbps recommendation and a two-second GOP. - Handle audio intentionally. The sample encodes stereo AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, matching YouTube’s stereo guidance. If the animation is silent, remove the audio options or explicitly map a soundtrack; do not assume every input has an audio stream.
- Start and verify. Start the FFmpeg process and check that it advances in real time rather than falling behind. Confirm YouTube Live Control Room receives the feed and reports healthy stream status before depending on it.
The command is illustrative, not a tested result. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, but the codec you can use depends on the installed FFmpeg build and account setup. H.264 with libx264 is a familiar compatibility-oriented path; other codecs may have different support and encoding demands. The FFmpeg project documents libx264 as an H.264/MPEG-4 AVC encoder wrapper and notes its build requirements in the FFmpeg Codecs Documentation.
Picture and audio details that affect the result
YouTube’s advanced SDR guidance includes square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 color, and 8-bit depth. The sample specifies yuv420p, but it does not explicitly set every listed encoder parameter. Check the source and your FFmpeg settings if exact picture characteristics matter; avoid adding scale, crop, or color conversion filters without understanding their effect on aspect ratio and color.

For audio, YouTube’s guidance is 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo. A silent animation can be sent without an audio stream if the workflow permits it. If you add music or effects, make sure you have the rights to use them in a live stream and any resulting archive.
Build the file sequence separately from the encoding profile
For a single file, -stream_loop -1 requests indefinite looping of that input. A sequence of distinct files, transitions, gapless handoffs, or a playlist that changes over time requires a playlist construction suited to those files and your FFmpeg build. Do not assume the one-file loop command will produce clean transitions or reliably join mismatched files. Normalize or deliberately handle differences in resolution, frame rate, audio layout, and duration before planning a continuous sequence.

The official references cited here establish YouTube’s ingest settings and FFmpeg’s encoder options; they do not establish a single concat command that works for every playlist structure. Choose and validate the playlist method for your actual files, then test handoffs and looping before scheduling a continuous stream.

Run a preflight and troubleshoot the common failures
- YouTube does not receive a feed: Check that the stream URL and key belong to the configured live stream, that the key has not been mistyped or revoked, and that the endpoint is reachable. Treat the key as a password; reset it if exposed.
- The feed is unstable or falls behind: Check FFmpeg’s progress for real-time encoding and confirm the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate. Lower the output profile or bitrate if the connection cannot maintain it; YouTube’s recommended bitrate is not a substitute for stable bandwidth.
- FFmpeg reports an encoder or option error: Confirm the installed build includes
libx264and supports the chosen output protocol. Build configuration varies, so the command may need adjustment for your installation. - There is no sound: Check whether the input actually has an audio stream. Remove the audio options for silent content or map the intended soundtrack explicitly.
- The picture is stretched or cropped: Compare source and output aspect ratios and inspect any scaling or crop filters. Preserve the source ratio unless a deliberate crop or padding is intended.
- A file change causes a gap or failed handoff: The single-input loop does not solve multi-file sequencing. Test your chosen playlist construction with the actual files, including their audio and format differences.
- The stream looks poor despite meeting the bitrate target: Inspect representative motion, fine lines, fades, and source quality. Try a profile with more resolution or bitrate only if the upload and encoding process sustain it, and verify the change in Live Control Room.
YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health. A short preflight should include representative movement, every audio case you plan to use, and at least one file handoff if the stream uses multiple files.
Choose local encoding or cloud playback for continuous operation
A local FFmpeg process gives you direct control over encoding and file handling, but the computer and network running it must remain available for the live feed. For continuous operation, compare that burden with a cloud service that plays uploaded video to YouTube. If you want to keep the FFmpeg workflow, validate process supervision, restart behavior, and your remote server’s capacity separately; hardware needs depend on source, resolution, codec, and runtime.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live; it does not stream from a camera. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home, and the cloud handles looping and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does FFmpeg encode an ordinary YouTube playlist?
No. FFmpeg sends a live encoder feed to YouTube Live; an ordinary playlist of uploaded YouTube videos is a separate feature and does not require RTMPS.
Can I use H.265 or AV1 instead of H.264?
YouTube lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 as live-ingest codecs, but availability depends on support in your FFmpeg build and the account and ingest setup.
Can I leave a live stream unattended indefinitely?
The command example loops one input, but it does not establish process supervision or guarantee uninterrupted operation. Test your specific sequence and runtime setup.
