When a Streamlabs alert image, sound, or animation misbehaves, first identify whether the problem is the uploaded asset, the alert’s settings or display, or its audio routing. Check the selected platform and event, save your changes, and test the alert before changing sources or clearing a cache. The fixes below follow that order, from simple checks to more disruptive troubleshooting.
Start with the alert’s setup and a test
- Open the alert settings in Streamlabs. Check global styling and the individual platform and event settings; an image, sound, message template, or animation may be configured differently for one event than another.
- Select the platform and event you intend to test. Confirm that the event is enabled and that the intended widget theme is active.
- Save before leaving the settings. Streamlabs’ setup guide warns: “Make sure to press Save Settings in the bottom right before moving to different left-side menu items!”
- Test in the context you use to stream. Use Live Preview or the dashboard’s test function, then check the alert source in Streamlabs Desktop, the Streamlabs plugin for OBS, or the browser source in OBS or other supported software. A correct dashboard preview does not by itself confirm that a source is visible or audible in your scene.
Streamlabs’ current setup guide describes options for image or video, positioning, message templates, sound, font, animations, and duration. Custom HTML, CSS, or JavaScript is an advanced option. Labels and source properties can vary between software versions.

Check the file type and size
Streamlabs’ Common Errors in Alert Customization article, last updated June 14, 2024, lists GIF, JPEG, PNG, WebM, and MP4 for image or video assets, and MP3, Ogg, and WAV for sound. It gives a stated size range of 200 KB to 45 MB. If an asset is rejected, verify its actual format and file size against those published limits before trying again.
Fix a missing or broken gallery control
If the gallery or upload controls are missing or rendering incorrectly, Streamlabs recommends trying a current version of Chrome or Firefox. If the asset is too large to upload directly, its customization guide describes using an external direct file URL. That URL must point to the media file itself; an ordinary sharing page or a link requiring a sign-in may not work.

Change an alert sound
Streamlabs documents three ways to set a sound: use an audio URL, upload an audio file, or choose an item from the Sounds Library. Select the intended sound and check its volume, save the change, then test it. If the sound is present in the dashboard but not in the broadcast, continue to the audio-routing checks below.

Check the event, theme, and variations
- Make sure the correct platform and event are selected and that the event is enabled.
- Confirm the intended widget theme is active and that the relevant alert variation has complete settings.
- If a wrong variation or missing content seems likely, temporarily disable variations as a diagnostic, save, and test again. Restore the intended variations after the test.
Check whether another source covers the alert
In the scene’s source list, move the alert source higher if another source is stacked over it. Test again to see whether the alert becomes visible.

Check animations, duration, and moderation
- Confirm that both the show and hide animations have a selection.
- Check that the alert duration is not so short that it disappears before you can see it.
- Check whether alerts are paused and whether a moderation delay is holding the event. Streamlabs says an unlimited moderation delay requires an authorized moderator to accept alerts; an unaccepted alert will not play.
Isolate custom code or a rendering issue
If custom HTML, CSS, or JavaScript is enabled and you did not create or maintain it, disable it temporarily to check whether it is causing the problem. Restore only code you intend to use. Streamlabs also suggests toggling browser hardware acceleration and restarting the streaming software as a troubleshooting step; it is not a guaranteed fix.
Streamlabs alert sound not working
- Check mute status. Look for the mute control in Recent Events and make sure the alert is not muted there.
- Check audio monitoring and tracks. Review Advanced Audio Settings and the alert’s monitoring choice. Confirm that alert audio is enabled on the track used by your stream or recording.
- Check the alert source’s routing. In Streamlabs Desktop, inspect the Alert Box source property for “Route Audio to OBS,” where that setting applies. The label or location can vary by software version.
- Recheck the customized sound. Confirm that the selected uploaded asset, library item, or URL is the one you intended, and that its volume is audible. Save and test in the dashboard and broadcasting software.

Alert repeats, echoes, or shows stale content
Refresh the widget source
If the source shows old content or fails to reflect saved settings, refresh the browser source. If refreshing does not help, remove and re-add the widget source. Streamlabs’ broader troubleshooting guide also suggests logging out and back into Streamlabs services or relinking the account when the issue appears account-related.
Fix an alert echo in OBS
First check for extra alert pop-out windows or duplicate alert sources. For an OBS browser source, Streamlabs recommends checking “Shutdown when not active” in every relevant scene. If the echo continues, recreate the source and test it again.

Clear the browser cache only after simpler checks
Streamlabs lists clearing the broadcasting software’s browser cache as a later troubleshooting step. Its guide gives a cache location for Windows; do not assume that Windows path applies to macOS. Close the broadcasting app before following a platform-specific cache-clearing procedure, then reopen it and test the alert. See Streamlabs’ Alerts/Widget Troubleshooting guide for the applicable source and cache steps.

- After editing an event, image, sound, or animation, use Save Settings before navigating to another menu.
- Check that you changed the intended platform and event rather than global styling or a different event.
- Run a test after saving. If the dashboard reflects the change but the broadcast source does not, refresh or recreate the source before changing the alert again.
- If the controls or gallery do not display correctly, try a current Chrome or Firefox browser.
