How to turn on Portrait Mode

Open Talk Studio and add yourself to the main canvas.

Among the video layouts, find the phone-shaped Portrait Mode icon next to the layouts control.

Select Portrait Mode before going live or starting a recording. Check that the canvas is arranged vertically.

Start the stream or recording only after confirming the orientation. Streamlabs says the orientation cannot be switched once either has started. Streamlabs’ Portrait Mode guide describes the layout and its behavior.
Portrait or landscape: which layout should you use?

Streamlabs says screen and video sharing are supported in the portrait workflow. Its portrait-mode help page was last updated April 25, 2025; see the current Streamlabs guide for its description of the feature.

Streaming vertically to Instagram or Facebook from a browser
Streamlabs’ Instagram browser-streaming guide describes portrait output as 9:16, or 1080 × 1920p, for Instagram or Facebook. It states that public Instagram accounts with at least 1,000 followers are eligible to go live. That threshold is Streamlabs’ stated requirement in a guide last updated August 11, 2025, not a guarantee of eligibility today; check Instagram’s current live rules and your account’s access before planning a broadcast. If you are setting Instagram up as a custom RTMP destination, Streamlabs’ troubleshooting guide says to press Portrait Mode before choosing Go Live. It also describes third-party RTMP-key arrangements and cautions that Instagram does not officially support direct live broadcasting on its platform. Destination availability and account settings can change, so do not assume that an RTMP workflow is available to every Instagram account. Check Streamlabs’ Instagram live-streaming troubleshooting page and Instagram’s current requirements for your setup.

Check your browser and upload connection
Streamlabs’ Talk Studio getting-started guide lists Chrome or Safari, a stable internet connection, and at least 5 Mbps upload among setup requirements. Its resolution estimates are:

These are Streamlabs’ guidance, not a promise that a connection meeting the figures will produce a particular stream quality. Other network activity and connection stability can still affect the session. See the Talk Studio getting-started guide.

Troubleshooting before you go live

The canvas is horizontal. Select the phone-shaped Portrait Mode layout before starting, then check the composition again. If the session has already begun, Talk Studio does not support switching orientation mid-stream or recording; stop and start a new session with the desired layout selected first.

You expected nametags to appear. Streamlabs says displayed nametags are not shown in portrait mode. Account for that in the composition before starting.

You are sharing a screen or video. Streamlabs says screen and video sharing are supported in the portrait workflow. Preview the vertical canvas so the shared material is legible in that framing.

The stream is unstable or the quality is lower than expected. Confirm you are using Chrome or Safari and check upload speed and connection stability against Streamlabs’ resolution guidance above. Meeting a listed speed does not guarantee a result.

Instagram live access or the RTMP option is missing. Check the current eligibility and destination options for your account. Streamlabs’ guide states a public-account threshold of 1,000 followers, but its guide was last updated August 11, 2025, and platform rules may change.
