Use CBR for an OBS stream to YouTube Live: YouTube’s live encoder settings specify constant bitrate encoding. Choose a bitrate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate that your connection can sustain, then test the actual playlist and watch YouTube’s stream health. A static playlist does not have a documented exception to this guidance, and the available official sources do not establish that VBR performs better—or worse—in a controlled 24/7 playlist test.
CBR vs VBR: which should you choose?
CBR means constant bitrate rate control; VBR means variable bitrate rate control. For an OBS-to-YouTube Live stream, the strongest decision point is YouTube’s own live-ingest guidance: it specifies CBR. Use CBR as the default rather than switching to VBR because a playlist contains static or low-motion scenes.
| Question | What the guidance supports |
|---|---|
| YouTube’s specified live bitrate mode | CBR is specified. VBR is not listed as the recommended live bitrate encoding mode on YouTube’s settings page. |
| Does CBR guarantee a reliable 24/7 stream? | No. CBR does not guarantee uninterrupted delivery; the connection must sustain the configured bitrate. |
| Is there a measured playlist-specific winner? | No controlled, long-duration CBR-versus-VBR comparison for a 24/7 playlist is established by the cited official sources. |
This is a recommendation for the YouTube destination, not a claim that VBR is universally unsupported or necessarily fails. OBS notes that encoding choices depend on the content and system; the names of the rate-control modes alone do not establish a reliability outcome.
Choose a bitrate for your stream
Use YouTube’s recommendation for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you have actually selected. Its figures are live-ingest recommendations, not a promise that a particular internet connection can sustain them.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| H.264 format | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s current live encoder settings recommendations; check its settings page for the full table and separate values for AV1 and H.265. For example, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at 1080p30 and 12 Mbps at 1080p60.
Your upload connection needs headroom beyond a speed-test peak. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance proposes 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate selection. Treat that as a rule of thumb, not a universal guarantee: assess stable upload capacity and the route to the streaming server, not just the best number from one test.

Set OBS and YouTube for a representative test
- Choose the YouTube ingest settings. Select the codec, resolution, and frame rate for your stream, then use the corresponding bitrate recommendation from YouTube’s live encoder settings. YouTube specifies RTMP or RTMPS, lists supported video codecs, recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Set OBS rate control to CBR. In OBS, open Settings > Output, select the streaming output mode, and set Rate Control to CBR. Set the bitrate to the value appropriate for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate, provided your stable upload connection can carry it. OBS labels and available controls can vary with output mode and encoder.
- Configure keyframes and the stream destination. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, in line with YouTube’s recommendation, and do not exceed 4 seconds. In OBS, open Settings > Stream and select YouTube or the appropriate custom service; enter or connect your YouTube stream key as required by that setup. Keep the key private.
- Test the real playlist. Start a test stream with representative audio, movement, scene changes, and playlist transitions. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream and checking stream health and its messages. For a 24/7 schedule, also check the playback and restart or transition behavior your setup will use; the sources do not prescribe a test duration or guarantee continuous operation.
- Review the result before leaving it unattended. Check OBS for dropped frames or encoding overload and YouTube for stream-health messages. If either reports a problem, identify whether the issue is delivery/network stability or local encoding performance before changing settings.
Troubleshoot dropped frames, disconnections, and poor output
Dropped frames or a stream that disconnects
OBS explains that dropped frames indicate the connection to the remote server is unstable or the configured bitrate cannot be sustained. Lower the bitrate to a level your stable upload can carry, check the destination server and network path, and review OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps. Switching to VBR is not an established fix for an unstable route.
If you are on Wi-Fi, test over wired Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable. Its troubleshooting guidance also lists modem/router issues and potentially faulty network cables, network cards, or other network devices. Check the connection path before replacing hardware; contact your ISP if you are unsure whether equipment needs replacement.

OBS offers dynamic bitrate as a fallback that lowers quality when the connection struggles. It can reduce interruptions, but OBS cautions that it does not resolve the underlying connection problem.
Encoding overload or skipped frames
Network dropped frames and local encoder overload are different problems. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance addresses connection delivery; its encoding performance guidance notes that system limits, resolution, frame rate, and encoder preset can cause skipping or image distortion. If OBS reports encoding lag or overload, investigate those local settings and system limits rather than assuming the upload bitrate or CBR mode is responsible.

Unclear stream-health messages
Use the message and timing to narrow the cause: a problem that coincides with rising OBS dropped frames points toward delivery stability or an unsustainable bitrate; encoding lag points toward the local encoder or system. Check YouTube’s stream health while running representative playlist material, then change one relevant setting at a time and test again.
