It is a data-plane check—not proof that viewers can play the stream successfully—so pair it with player-side or synthetic playback testing.
What the canary monitor checks
The AWS Samples project is a Python tool that repeatedly requests HLS or DASH manifests and analyzes them. Depending on configuration, it can also request segments and ad-tracking data. It is primarily designed for origins using AWS Elemental MediaPackage and MediaTailor, but the AWS blog describes use with various origins.
The monitor observes what it can fetch and parse from the configured endpoints. It does not establish that every rendition looks or sounds correct, that every CDN path works, or that a viewer can play the stream on every device. Treat it as one layer of observability, not an end-to-end playback test.
HLS and DASH checks are not identical
The 2024 AWS article describes checks for staleness, discontinuities, specification compliance, ad breaks, and audio/video alignment. Its HLS examples include discontinuity markers and changes to EXT-X-VERSION or EXT-X-TARGETDURATION. Its DASH examples include timeline gaps and presentation-time differences between adaptation sets. These are examples from the article, not a guarantee that every check is enabled by every current configuration.

Staleness means that no new segment appears within the configured interval. Interpret it relative to the stream’s segment cadence and acceptable delivery delay; a brief pause during an expected transition should not automatically be treated as an incident.
Choose local or AWS-integrated operation
| Consideration | Local operation | AWS-integrated operation |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | You operate the host and keep it available. | The repository describes EC2 hosting; you operate the host and its availability. |
| AWS account and data transfer | Default settings do not send data to AWS and do not require an AWS account. | CloudWatch, dashboards, S3 reports, and related resources require deliberate configuration and appropriate permissions. |
| Metrics and reports | Review the local logs and reports produced by the tool. | Enable the integrations you need for centralized metrics, dashboards, or report storage. |
| Credentials and permissions | Validate endpoint access from the host; AWS credentials are not required by default. | Permissions depend on enabled integrations. The repository describes an IAM role with CloudWatch PutMetricData permission or configured credentials; review current setup files and use least privilege. |
| Cost and performance comparison | Not stated by the project documentation. | Not stated by the project documentation. |
AWS Elemental MediaPackage also publishes its own CloudWatch service metrics for live content, including metrics applicable to HLS and DASH endpoints. Those service-level metrics are distinct from the canary’s custom inspection metrics: one reports service telemetry, while the other actively requests and parses endpoint data. See AWS Elemental MediaPackage CloudWatch monitoring documentation.

Set up the current v3 repository
The AWS Samples repository identifies v3 as released in March 2026. V3 changes the setup approach: configuration is in settings.yaml, and the endpoint CSV syntax changed. Do not use the older command-line setup example in the August 2024 blog as current v3 instructions. Before installing, consult the current repository README and setup files, since dependencies, defaults, and supported settings can change.
Prerequisites and endpoint information
- Python 3.9 or newer, according to the current repository documentation.
- The README lists dependencies including
lxml,deepdiff,threefive,Jinja2,boto3/botocore,urllib3,isodate,python-json-logger, andPyYAML. Follow the repository’s current installation instructions rather than assuming this list is exhaustive or unchanged. - For local input mode, endpoint CSV files under the
originsfolder. A row identifies endpoint type, protocol technology, workload, endpoint and origin names, whether dynamic ad insertion applies, a monitoring configuration, and the manifest URL. A tracking URL can also be supplied. - Network reachability and any necessary credentials for the manifest, segment, or tracking URLs from the machine that will run the monitor.
Configure and start locally first
- Inventory the endpoints. Record whether each stream is HLS or DASH, its workload and origin, whether dynamic ad insertion is used, and the manifest and applicable tracking URLs. Check access from the actual monitor host, not only from a developer workstation.
- Install from the current README. Use the repository’s current dependency and setup instructions. Start with local mode and a small number of non-production or otherwise low-risk endpoints when that suits your environment.
- Review
settings.yamland the CSV format. Configure the current v3 settings and endpoint rows as documented. The README’s example endpoint uses a DASH MPD URL; use the syntax shown in the current README for your own HLS or DASH rows. - Set checks and thresholds for the stream. Consult the current configuration for supported parameters and defaults. Choose a stale interval that accounts for segment duration, playlist refresh behavior, and the delay your operation can tolerate. The five-second polling example in the 2024 AWS article is an illustrative historical value, not a universal recommendation or a current v3 default.
- Observe normal operation before paging anyone. Run long enough to see ordinary playlist refreshes, rendition changes, periods, discontinuities, and expected ad behavior. Compare unexpected findings with origin logs and playback observations before escalating.
- Enable AWS integrations only if needed. Configure CloudWatch metrics or dashboards, S3 report storage, or management resources deliberately. Confirm the AWS region, required roles and permissions, and report-retention needs before relying on these outputs.
Choose metrics and alerts that lead to an action
The current README groups example metrics across manifests, segments, tracking, and ad breaks. These include request status and latency, buffer-fill duration, HLS program-date-time delta, DASH PTS and segment-availability delta, segment duration, and advertised-versus-observed ad-break duration. Common dimensions identify protocol, workload, endpoint, and origin; some metrics also include rendition or request dimensions.

Base alerts on failures an operator can investigate or act on: repeated fetch errors, persistent staleness, parsing or compliance failures, or mismatched ad signaling. Choose thresholds for the endpoint’s normal behavior and avoid noisy alarms during expected stream transitions. Keep reports and relevant manifests around incidents where permitted; the AWS article notes that archiving can help with troubleshooting.
AWS for M&E Blog author Tomas Juraska wrote on 15 August 2024: “Monitoring the data plane of an ABR stream can help prevent and resolve unexpected issues with playback or monetization by proactively alerting operators to potential issues.” This describes the purpose of proactive monitoring; it is not a quantified reliability or outage-reduction result.

Test playback separately
Pair origin inspection with player-side or synthetic playback checks that reflect the viewers and devices you support. A green manifest check alone cannot prove successful playback across that matrix. For HLS, Apple documents mediastreamvalidator as a command-line utility for validating an HLS stream or server. It is a separate validation tool and does not, by itself, prove the viewer experience on every player or device. See Apple’s HLS deployment and validation guidance.
Troubleshoot common monitoring findings
The manifest cannot be fetched
Check the URL, DNS and network path from the monitor host, endpoint availability, and any required authentication or access restrictions. A URL that works from a browser on another machine does not establish that the canary host can reach it.

The monitor reports a stale manifest
Compare the configured interval with the segment cadence and actual playlist refresh behavior. Confirm whether new segments are appearing at the origin and whether a temporary pause is an expected transition before paging on-call staff.
A compliance or parsing finding appears
Identify the protocol and specific manifest field or structure involved, then compare the report with the origin’s current output and the relevant stream behavior. The article’s examples—such as HLS discontinuities or DASH timeline gaps—are format-specific; do not assume a check or interpretation transfers unchanged between protocols.
An ad-break duration or tracking signal differs
Verify that the endpoint is configured for dynamic ad insertion where applicable, and inspect the relevant manifest signaling and tracking URL from the monitor host. Compare the canary report with expected ad behavior before treating an isolated mismatch as a production failure.
A CloudWatch metric or dashboard is missing
Confirm that the AWS integration is enabled, the monitor is configured for the intended region, and its role or credentials have the permissions needed for the selected features. Review current repository setup files and apply least privilege; local default operation does not publish data to AWS.
