How to Make a YouTube Livestream Show a Holding Screen Between Playlist Videos

Use an OBS VLC Video playlist scene and a separate holding-screen scene. Switch between them manually; automatic interstitials at every playlist boundary are not established by the cited OBS documentation.

Use OBS Studio with a VLC Video source for the playlist, then switch to a separate holding-screen scene between clips. This documented approach is manual: the OBS materials cited here do not establish an automatic trigger that inserts a holding screen at every playlist-item boundary.

Why a YouTube playlist is not enough

A YouTube watch playlist is a queue of uploaded videos for viewers. It does not send those videos as an encoder livestream. To broadcast a sequence of local video files as one live feed, use encoder software such as OBS Studio; YouTube receives the feed through the encoder connection. YouTube explains how to set up a live stream with an encoder, and its playlist documentation covers organizing videos for playback.

Set up the playlist and holding screen in OBS

  1. Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. For 64-bit OBS, the OBS media-source documentation specifies 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide (dated January 11, 2022).
  2. Create a playlist scene. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and add your local media files in the order you want them played. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence. Enable Loop Playlist only if you want the sequence to restart after its final item. The source also includes Visibility Behaviour controls; consult the current OBS interface and documentation for their effect in your setup.
  3. Create a holding-screen scene. Add a still image and any text or other OBS sources you want viewers to see between clips. OBS scenes can combine media and other sources. The OBS Studio Overview Guide describes scenes as the place to assemble media and devices in the stream layout.
  4. Choose a transition. Set a cut or fade in OBS, then switch from the playlist scene to the holding-screen scene and back when appropriate. OBS documents scene switching and transitions, but the sources cited here do not document a built-in automatic interstitial at each VLC playlist boundary.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Start the encoder, inspect the preview, and follow YouTube’s Live Control Room prompt to go live. YouTube’s encoder setup guide and live streaming tips recommend previewing and testing the setup.
  6. Keep the stream key private. It lets YouTube accept the encoder feed, so do not share it or show it on the holding screen.

What to expect between playlist items

With this setup, you decide when to show the holding screen by switching scenes. If you want an automatic screen after every clip, do not assume the VLC playlist will trigger it: the official OBS materials cited above do not verify that behavior. Use an automation method only after confirming its current compatibility and testing it with the complete sequence.

Check the stream before viewers arrive

  • Play through the playlist and confirm the intended order and whether it loops.
  • Switch to the holding scene and back, checking that the chosen transition looks right.
  • Check that video and audio are present in the YouTube preview before going live.
  • Make sure the holding screen and playlist content are appropriate for the audience and that you have rights to broadcast the media. YouTube’s live streaming tips advise testing and monitoring the stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube livestream, rather than manually switching OBS scenes, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video or playlist from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots. The first day is free with no card; the Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live setup. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
