You can create a good video with the phone you already own. Start with a clear idea, choose the right orientation, find soft light and a quiet spot, keep the phone steady, and make a short test recording before you film the whole thing. Extra gear is optional: add a tripod, microphone, or light only when it solves a specific problem.
1. Decide what the video is for
Before opening the camera, write one sentence describing what you want viewers to learn, see, or feel. For a game walkthrough, for example, decide whether the video is meant to show one quick tip, explain a full strategy, or capture a reaction. That choice determines what to record and how to frame it.
For a short clip, plan a quick opening, the main point, and a finish. For a tutorial or longer video, make a short shot list: note the action, framing, angle, and any movement you need. YouTube recommends planning the location and using a shot list for larger productions; Vimeo’s guide also recommends mapping a beginning, middle, and end. Choose the format before you record
Use vertical framing for a vertical-first destination such as YouTube Shorts. For conventional HD video, YouTube’s general mobile filming guidance recommends horizontal 16:9 framing. If you hope to use the same footage in both formats, plan for that up front: keep the important action near the center and check that it remains visible in a vertical crop. You may get a better result by recording separate takes for each format rather than relying on a crop.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Keep the subject and any important on-screen action inside the frame. If you are filming a phone screen, game controller, or hands-on demonstration, check that the display, hands, and any useful labels are all visible before you begin. YouTube tips to film with mobile
2. Choose a location and prepare your phone
Find usable light and a quiet spot
Look for soft, even light on the person or object you are filming. Indoors, try facing a window; outdoors, open shade can avoid harsh sunlight and deep shadows. Avoid placing a bright window or lamp directly behind a face or object if that makes it too dark. If daylight and the room’s existing light are not workable, a small compatible LED light is an option—not a requirement.
Choose a quiet location when speech matters. Turn off fans or buzzing electronics if you can, and avoid an echoing room where possible. Check the background for distractions and for private details such as an address, account name, or notification that you do not mean to show.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Set up the phone
- Clean the camera lens with a soft cloth so fingerprints do not soften or haze the image.
- Turn off notifications or use a focus mode so alerts do not interrupt the take or appear on screen.
- Use the rear camera when it is practical to frame and monitor the shot; YouTube notes that it often records at higher resolution.
- Start with the camera’s automatic mode. If your phone offers focus and exposure locking and the shot is fixed, locking them can prevent visible focus or brightness shifts. Controls vary by phone and operating-system version, so there is no universal tap sequence.
- Check that the microphone openings are not covered by your hand, case, or mount.
Before filming around other people or on property you do not control, consider privacy and permission. YouTube’s filming guidance advises respecting bystanders’ privacy and avoiding personal information such as a home address in the video. YouTube filming tips

Viewers can tolerate a less polished picture more easily than speech they cannot understand. The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources Communications Toolkit puts it plainly: “Poor audio is more distracting to viewers than poor video.”
Move closer to the phone, speak toward it, and record a short test. Listen back with headphones if available. A quiet room and a clear test take may fix the problem without buying anything.

When an external microphone helps
A compatible lavalier microphone can help when the speaker needs to stand away from the phone; a shotgun microphone can be useful in some setups. UC ANR’s toolkit describes built-in phone, lavalier, and shotgun microphone options and recommends a wired lavalier for a stationary speaker. A microphone is not automatically an improvement, though: check that it works with your phone’s port or adapter, test the connection, and listen to a playback before recording a full take. Phone ports and accessory compatibility differ.
For a game clip that relies on narration, record a short sample with the game audio at the level you expect to use. Make sure the narration is understandable over the game sound. UC ANR Communications Toolkit: Recording

4. Keep the shot steady and capture what the edit needs
For a fixed talking-head, unboxing, or hands-on tutorial, put the phone at a useful height on a stable support. A phone tripod with a mount is helpful for hands-free recording; a shelf or other stable surface can work just as well for a first video. Frame the shot, then check that the phone will not wobble when you touch a controller, desk, or nearby surface.

For handheld footage, hold the phone with two hands and move slowly and deliberately. A gimbal is a specialized mechanical stabilizer for smoother moving shots, but it is not essential for a basic how-to video. If movement is not important, a steady fixed shot is often simpler.
Record a few extra detail shots or B-roll clips when they will help explain the topic or cover an edit. For example, a close-up of a controller input can clarify a tutorial, while a second angle can make a demonstration easier to follow. Do not add clips just to make the video longer.

5. Record a test, then make the full take
- Set the phone in the intended orientation and frame the subject.
- Check light, background, and sound; confirm that the subject is not a silhouette and the microphone is unobstructed.
- Record a brief test with the same movement and speaking distance you plan to use.
- Play it back. Check framing, focus, exposure, stability, and whether speech is clear.
- Adjust one problem at a time, then record the full take. If something goes wrong, pause and repeat the affected section rather than trying to fix every mistake while recording.
6. Edit the footage into a clear video
Review the takes and keep the parts that help the viewer follow the idea. Trim unusable starts and stops, pauses, and mistakes; put clips in a clear order; and use extra detail shots only where they make the explanation easier to understand. Built-in phone editing can be enough for simple trimming. A dedicated editor may provide more controls, but its features, availability, and cost depend on the current app and platform.
Vimeo’s guide, updated December 26, 2024, lists iMovie and LumaFusion for iOS and PowerDirector and InShot for Android as examples. Treat these as examples from that dated guide, not a current ranking or a guarantee of present availability, features, or price. Before choosing an editor, check its current platform support and whether it can export in the format and aspect ratio you need.
Export for the destination you chose before recording, then watch the finished file once before sharing. Check that the opening is not cut off, the audio is audible, the framing still works, and no private information slipped into the shot.
