Why Does a 24/7 YouTube Stream Show a Black Screen Between Playlist Videos?

A black interval between playlist videos does not reveal where the fault lies. Check the source, encoder output, local archive, YouTube preview, and viewer playback in sequence.

A black screen between playlist videos does not, by itself, prove YouTube is causing the problem. Find the first point where the blank appears: the playlist or source file, the encoder output, a local recording, YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, or only a viewer’s playback. That evidence tells you which part of the stream to troubleshoot.

Where in the streaming chain does the black interval first appear?

Check the same playlist transition at each stage. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends inspecting the encoder, checking for encoder errors and high CPU load, reviewing a local archive, and testing the outbound connection when the encoder output looks healthy. Its setup guidance also recommends previewing in Live Control Room and monitoring audio and video. Together, these checks can help localize the fault; YouTube does not document this exact playlist-boundary symptom or a setting guaranteed to make third-party playlist transitions gapless.

What you observe Where to investigate next
The outgoing video ends blank, the next file starts late, or the gap is visible in the source playback. Inspect the media files, playlist timing, and the system that schedules or opens the next item.
The source looks fine, but the encoder preview or local recording shows black. Inspect the encoder’s source or scene handoff, errors, and CPU load.
The encoder output and local recording are continuous, but Live Control Room shows an issue. Check stream health and outbound connectivity; use any error-specific troubleshooting guidance shown by YouTube.
Live Control Room and the archive look continuous, but one viewer reports a black screen. Compare playback on another device or connection. An issue limited to one viewer points toward that playback path rather than proving a source or encoder fault.
Several viewers report the same interruption. Recheck the encoder output, Live Control Room preview, stream-health messages, and connection. Reports from multiple viewers make a shared stream-path issue more plausible, but do not identify its cause on their own.

These are diagnostic inferences from YouTube’s general checks, not a published cause-and-effect guide for playlist transitions. A short gap could plausibly occur because the next item is not ready when the previous one ends, or because an encoder changes sources or scenes during the handoff. Confirm what the source and encoder actually output at that moment before changing settings or buying equipment.

How to troubleshoot a black gap between playlist videos

  1. Inspect the transition at the source. Play the outgoing file through its end and check when the next item becomes available. Look for blank frames, an unintended pause, or a delay while the playlist system opens the next file. Third-party playlist systems differ; YouTube does not prescribe their scheduling settings.
  2. Watch the encoder output at the boundary. Observe the encoder preview or program output as one item ends and the next begins. Confirm that the intended next source becomes active, and check for encoder errors or unusually high CPU use. YouTube’s troubleshooting advice includes checking the encoder and its CPU load.
  3. Compare a local recording or archive. If it contains the black interval, focus first on the source, playlist, or encoder path. If it is clean, compare it with the Live Control Room preview and stream-health information, then check the outbound connection. A clean local recording does not, by itself, prove which later stage is responsible.
  4. Test a representative handoff before relying on the stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement representative of the intended stream, previewing before going live, and monitoring audio and video. Include a playlist transition in the test; a static segment will not reveal a boundary problem.
  5. Check network health if the encoder looks clean. YouTube recommends checking outbound internet strength when the signal looks and sounds healthy inside the encoder. A connection that can sustain the average bitrate may still be affected by congestion.
  6. Review latency and keyframes only after locating the issue. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Lower latency reduces the player’s read-ahead buffer and can make viewers more likely to experience buffering. A higher-latency setting may help stability in some contexts, but YouTube does not document it as a fix for black frames at playlist boundaries.

What settings can—and cannot—fix

Use the encoder settings guidance as general streaming advice, not as a specific remedy for a gap between files. In particular, the recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds) is not documented as a gapless-transition switch. Likewise, changing latency may affect buffering and stability, but it does not establish that a playlist handoff is fixed.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Make one change at a time and repeat the same transition test. If you change source scheduling, encoder configuration, and latency together, it becomes harder to tell which change affected the result.

Why changing gear may not help

A black gap at a playlist boundary does not establish that the encoder, a capture card, a network cable, or separate playback hardware is at fault. Start with the source, encoder output, archive, and connection checks. YouTube generally recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, but that broad recommendation is not evidence that new hardware will fix this particular symptom.
