How to Make a 24/7 YouTube Stream Restart Its Playlist After a Server Reboot

Use a boot-enabled systemd service to relaunch FFmpeg and loop your playlist after a Linux reboot. Learn what may not recover automatically and how to test it.

On a Linux server, use a boot-enabled systemd service to launch FFmpeg after reboot, and configure FFmpeg to loop the playlist. In YouTube Live Control Room, verify the stream key, ingest URL, and auto-start setting. This can restart the encoder and playlist playback; it does not guarantee that YouTube resumes the same broadcast or that playback returns to the exact item that was playing before the reboot. Test the complete setup with an unlisted stream before relying on it.

Know what should recover

There are two separate goals after a reboot: restarting FFmpeg and its playlist, and resuming the same YouTube broadcast or watch page. A service manager and a looping FFmpeg input address the first goal. YouTube’s guidance on encoder connections and auto-start does not promise that a reboot will rejoin the same event, so verify the behavior with your channel and stream settings.

  • Encoder recovery: the server starts FFmpeg again after boot and the media begins playing.
  • Broadcast recovery: YouTube accepts the restarted feed in the intended Live Control Room event and viewers return to the intended watch page. Treat this as unconfirmed until tested.
  • Playlist position: a new FFmpeg process may start from the beginning. Exact position recovery requires separate persistence logic and testing; a loop alone does not save the previous position.

Prepare the FFmpeg stream and playlist

Make sure the server can read everything

Place the FFmpeg command and playlist where the Linux account that will run the service can read them. Confirm that media paths work from that account, not just from your interactive shell. The playlist format determines how FFmpeg reads and loops the inputs; use loop behavior appropriate to that format. A community example uses FFmpeg’s concat demuxer and a file list, but it is an implementation example rather than a universal configuration.

Use the correct YouTube ingest details

In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the server URL and stream key for the intended stream, then configure the encoder to send its feed there. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” (Manage live stream settings). Treat the key as a credential: do not commit it to a public repository, publish it in a public unit file, or expose it in logs. Restrict access to whatever configuration or secret storage holds it.

Run FFmpeg automatically after boot with systemd

Use a system service that runs the known-good FFmpeg command under the intended non-root account, restarts it when it exits, and is enabled to start at boot. The exact unit depends on your Linux distribution, paths, account, and command, so adapt and test it rather than copying an unverified unit file wholesale. A community implementation demonstrates the FFmpeg-plus-systemd approach with Restart=always; it is an example, not an official YouTube specification (community implementation example).

  1. Validate the command manually. Run the command as the service account and verify that FFmpeg can read the playlist, reach YouTube’s ingest server, and make progress without relying on shell-only environment variables or relative paths.
  2. Create a service unit. Set the unit to run as the intended account and invoke the validated command using stable, absolute paths. Configure a restart policy and a suitable delay for your host so a failed process is retried without a rapid restart loop.
  3. Enable it at boot. Enable the service with your distribution’s systemctl workflow, then start it and inspect its state and logs. Confirm it is active and that FFmpeg is processing the expected media.
  4. Configure YouTube auto-start if appropriate. YouTube’s stream settings provide auto-start and auto-stop options, which let the encoder start or stop streaming. Check the setting for this specific stream instead of assuming it is on. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s encoder guidance describes waiting for the preview and selecting “Go live”; unattended startup depends on the configured workflow (Manage live stream settings).
  5. Reboot and verify the result. Reboot a staging or unlisted setup. Check the service state and logs, FFmpeg output progress, the Live Control Room preview and stream health, the watch page, and which playlist item is playing before relying on the setup.

Test the full reboot path

YouTube recommends testing a stream and monitoring stream health (YouTube streaming troubleshooting). A useful test checks more than whether the service is active:

  • After the reboot, does the service start under the expected account?
  • Can FFmpeg read the playlist and media files, and does its output continue advancing?
  • Does YouTube receive the feed and show a healthy preview?
  • Does the configured auto-start behavior start the broadcast, or does the event require an action in Live Control Room?
  • Does the watch page behave as intended, and does the playlist begin at the expected item?

Repeat the test after changing the unit, FFmpeg command, playlist, stream key, or YouTube stream settings. Do not assume a successful process restart proves that the same broadcast resumed.

Troubleshoot common reboot failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Service does not start after reboot The unit is not enabled, the command or paths are wrong, or the service account lacks access. Check the service state and boot logs; verify the unit’s enablement, account, executable path, and file permissions.
Service runs, but FFmpeg cannot open media The playlist uses relative or inaccessible paths, or the service account cannot read the files. Use paths that resolve in the service environment and check permissions as the service account.
FFmpeg runs, but YouTube receives no feed The ingest URL or stream key is incorrect, unavailable to the service, or the encoder configuration has an error. Verify the stream’s current ingest details and review YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance (YouTube streaming troubleshooting).
The feed returns, but the broadcast does not start as expected Auto-start may not be enabled, or the event’s workflow may require action in Live Control Room. Inspect the stream’s auto-start setting and test the actual event workflow; do not infer same-broadcast recovery from FFmpeg being active.
Playlist starts at the first item A new FFmpeg process started without saved playlist-position state. Decide whether restarting from the beginning is acceptable. If not, implement and test position persistence separately.
Service repeatedly restarts FFmpeg exits on an input, configuration, or connection error and the restart policy keeps retrying. Inspect recent service logs and FFmpeg errors, correct the underlying fault, and use a restart delay that avoids a rapid loop.

What YouTube archiving does—and does not—mean

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived (YouTube live stream archiving guidance). That statement is about archiving; it is not a promise that a stream will recover after a host reboot, that a broadcast can run indefinitely, or that a restarted encoder will resume the same event.
