There is not enough information to identify one cause of OBS skipping or freezing on particular playlist entries. First check whether the source is VLC Video or Media Source, then test the affected file against one that works and check the source’s dependencies and settings. “YouTube playlist” can mean different things: the OBS and VLC guidance here concerns media files played by an OBS source, not OBS reading a YouTube playlist.
First identify what OBS is playing
OBS has two relevant source types: its built-in Media Source and VLC Video, which uses VLC libraries and supports playlists. Check the source name in the OBS Sources list and establish whether you added one VLC Video source containing multiple playlist entries or several individual Media Sources. The distinction matters because the sources use different playback paths.
If the source is VLC Video
VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to be available. OBS documentation specifies that a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. Check both the installed VLC version and architecture before treating a playlist failure as a problem with the file itself.
If the source is Media Source
Check the individual Media Source and the file it is meant to play. OBS lists supported file extensions for Media Source, but an extension alone does not prove that a particular file is valid or that its container and codecs work in your setup.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Isolate the file before changing settings
- Play the problem entry outside OBS. Confirm that it opens and plays through the same point where OBS skips or stops. A file that fails in another player may be truncated or malformed.
- Compare it with a known-good entry in the same OBS source. Note whether the failing items share an extension, encoding, audio/video composition, or network location. A pattern is more useful than changing several settings at once.
- Check format and encoding, not just the filename suffix. OBS’s format guidance distinguishes containers from codecs; two files with the same extension need not behave identically in a given setup.
- Test one entry on its own, then in the playlist. If it works alone but fails in the playlist, record that difference. If the same file fails both ways, focus first on the file and playback compatibility.
An OBS issue report used an invalid MP4 as a VLC-source crash reproduction. That shows an invalid playlist entry can matter in a reported case; it does not establish that file corruption is the cause of every skip or freeze.
Review playlist and visibility behavior
For VLC Video, check whether loop or shuffle is enabled and how the source behaves when hidden. OBS exposes choices to stop and restart, pause and resume, or always play while hidden, as well as a network caching setting.

- If the failure happens at a scene change or when the source becomes hidden, note the selected hidden-source behavior and test whether the symptom changes when the source remains visible.
- If only network-hosted entries fail while local files work, treat that as a separate clue and record which entries are remote.
- Do not assume that increasing network caching will fix a local-file stall. The setting exists, but OBS does not describe it as a universal remedy.
Use the symptom to narrow the cause
Only some MP3 items lose audio at the boundaries
A report filed against OBS 29.1.3 on Windows 10 described MP3 playlist items losing about a second at the beginning and end. This is a specific historical report, not proof of a current general MP3 problem. Compare affected and unaffected files and include your own OBS version and operating system when seeking help.
Video appears frozen but audio continues
An older OBS issue involving mixed audio and video files in VLC Video described a frozen video frame while audio continued. The audio/video split is a useful diagnostic observation, but the report concerned older OBS versions and does not establish a current universal defect.

Only local monitoring sounds delayed or skips
A report for macOS 12 and OBS 28.0.3 described delayed VLC controls and audio monitoring. An OBS project member said the recording captured the skips correctly while monitored audio was buffered; the issue was closed in July 2023. Check whether the interruption is present in an actual recording or stream, or only in preview and local monitoring. Do not infer from that old report that current macOS builds have the same issue.

- Whether the source is VLC Video or Media Source.
- Your operating system and OBS version; for VLC Video, the VLC version and whether its architecture matches OBS.
- The affected file’s extension and, if known, its container and codecs; whether it plays completely outside OBS; and whether a known-good file works in the same source.
- Whether entries are local files or network URLs, and whether the playlist mixes audio-only and video files.
- Whether audio continues during a visual freeze, and whether the symptom occurs in the recording or stream as well as in monitoring or preview.
- Whether it happens when the source is hidden or a scene changes, plus an OBS log from a session in which the failure occurs.
These details help distinguish a file-specific failure from a source, dependency, visibility, or monitoring issue. Without them, a single-cause diagnosis would be guesswork.

The OBS forum lists a third-party Media Playlist Source plugin that uses Media Source internally and describes Windows, macOS, and Linux support, with OBS 30.0.0 as its minimum version. It may be worth investigating if VLC Video appears to be the failure point, but its existence does not establish that it will fix your case. Before installing it, check its current maintenance status and compatibility with your OBS version.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your broader goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a YouTube live stream, rather than to repair playback inside OBS, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at the quality you made it, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This does not diagnose or repair an OBS playlist file. Try StreamNeo.
