The command below is a 1080p30 starting point; adjust its video bitrate and keyframe interval to match your actual output settings.
Use this FFmpeg command as a 1080p30 starting point

-f flv "rtmps://SERVER/STREAM_KEY"Replace input.mp4 with your file and replace the destination with the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat 4500 Kbps as a conservative example, not YouTube’s recommended 1080p30 target: YouTube currently lists 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30. The command does not resize the video or convert its frame rate; it assumes the source and intended output are 30 fps with usable timestamps and audio that can be encoded as stereo AAC. The example has not been tested against your file, FFmpeg build, or network.
What the command options do
-rereads the file at its native frame rate, rather than sending it as fast as FFmpeg can process it. This is appropriate when replaying a file as a live stream.-stream_loop -1loops the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so it belongs before-i.-c:v libx264selects the H.264 encoder.-b:v,-maxrate, and-bufsizeconfigure bitrate-targeted encoding.-preset veryfastfavors faster encoding over compression efficiency. If your CPU cannot encode in real time, reducing the workload may help; a slower preset can improve compression efficiency but uses more processing time.-g 60and-keyint_min 60set a 60-frame keyframe interval. That is two seconds only at 30 fps.-sc_threshold 0disables scene-cut keyframes so the interval stays consistent.-pix_fmt yuv420pselects a widely compatible pixel format for H.264 playback and ingest.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100encodes audio as AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz, YouTube’s published stereo audio recommendation.-f flvselects the FLV muxer used for RTMP-family streaming. The destination uses RTMPS, YouTube’s recommended encrypted transport.

Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframes deliberately
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, AAC or MP3, and constant bitrate (CBR) among its settings. Its H.264 bitrate recommendations vary by output resolution and frame rate. The table gives YouTube’s currently published values; consult its live encoder settings and bitrate guidance before deployment, as recommendations can change.

Choose the row matching the stream’s actual output resolution and frame rate, then set -b:v and -maxrate accordingly. Keep -bufsize appropriate to the bitrate target; the sample uses twice its video bitrate. Ensure your sustained upload capacity has headroom above the combined audio and video stream bitrate, rather than relying on a short speed test.
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Calculate GOP frames from the output frame rate: use 60 frames for 30 fps, 50 for 25 fps, or 120 for 60 fps to target two seconds. The sample does not set an output frame rate, so its 60-frame interval is only two seconds if the source is 30 fps. If you need a different output rate, set it deliberately and recalculate the GOP. Forcing an output rate can duplicate or drop frames when it differs from the source.

Start the YouTube stream and check it before relying on it
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select an existing one.
- Copy the server URL and stream key provided there into the command’s RTMPS destination. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes obtaining and entering these values.
- Run the command and check YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators. YouTube recommends testing with representative movement and audio before starting the real broadcast.
- Only treat the stream as production-ready after checking the actual video, audio, ingest health, and sustained network behavior.
Plan for the failures an input loop cannot fix
-stream_loop -1 repeats the input file; it does not restart FFmpeg after a crash or recover from a failed host, network connection, or missing source. A self-hosted 24/7 setup needs a machine that stays on, a reliable connection, process supervision and restart behavior, and a plan for source or power failures. Check the source file’s audio and timestamps, and monitor the YouTube stream rather than assuming an infinite loop guarantees uninterrupted uptime.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended. Do not assume one uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours will produce a complete archive; plan stream sessions and any recording needs around YouTube’s stated archive behavior.

Common problems and fixes
- FFmpeg says it cannot find the file: Check the input path and filename, including capitalization where relevant. Run the command from the directory containing the file or provide its full path.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Confirm that the server URL and stream key were copied from the selected Live Control Room stream and that the destination uses the correct RTMPS address. Keep the key private.
- Stream health reports instability: Compare the sustained upload capacity with the selected video bitrate plus audio, and leave headroom. If needed, select a lower resolution or frame rate and use the matching YouTube bitrate recommendation.
- Video has the wrong cadence or keyframe spacing: The sample assumes 30 fps for its two-second GOP. Determine the source and intended output frame rate, set output conversion only if needed, and recalculate
-gand-keyint_min. - There is no audio, or audio is not what you expect: Check that the source contains the intended audio stream. A file with no audio will not gain meaningful audio merely from AAC encoding. A static image or silent source needs an explicitly constructed continuous video/audio input; the right filter chain depends on whether it should remain silent or use a separate music source.
- Encoding falls behind real time: Check CPU load and whether the chosen resolution, frame rate, and x264 preset are sustainable on the host. A faster preset reduces encoding workload at the cost of compression efficiency; alternatively, lower the output demand.
- The process stops and the stream ends: An input loop cannot recover a terminated process or disconnected host. Add process supervision and host/network monitoring, or use a cloud service designed to keep the stream running.

Looping a video does not grant permission to broadcast its footage or music. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies for your channel and content. A valid FFmpeg command is not a guarantee of policy compliance or monetization eligibility.
