To loop a local video on YouTube Live from a Mac, add it to an OBS scene as a Media Source, enable Loop, then connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream with its server URL and stream key. Start the feed, check the preview and stream health in YouTube Studio, and go live when YouTube prompts you.
Before you start: check YouTube eligibility and prepare your stream
Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live activation can take time, so enable it before your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder setup instructions for current requirements.
- Install OBS on the Mac and have the video or audio file you intend to loop available locally.
- Choose a resolution, frame rate and bitrate your Mac can encode and your internet connection can upload reliably.
- Plan a controlled test—such as an unlisted stream—before relying on the setup for a public broadcast.
Set up a looping media file in OBS on macOS
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, use the Scenes panel to choose an existing scene or add one for the loop.
- Add the file. In Sources, select + → Media Source. Give the source a recognizable name, then choose the local video or audio file. OBS documents common video formats including MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. See OBS Media Sources.
- Enable looping. In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. OBS describes this control as restarting the file after playback completes. Confirm the source appears and plays in the preview.
- Check the mix. Play the scene and look at OBS’s audio mixer. Make sure the source is audible at a sensible level and that the picture is framed as intended. If the media has no audio, do not assume that adding a separate desktop-audio capture is necessary.
When a playlist or screen capture makes more sense
For one local file, Media Source is the direct option. If you need a playlist, OBS’s VLC Video source can loop playlist items, but VLC must be installed. If the content is playing in another application or you need to capture a display or window, use macOS Screen Capture instead; a local media file does not need screen capture. OBS’s macOS capture documentation says audio capture is available on macOS 13 and later, while macOS 12.3–12.6 is listed as available without audio. That documentation is dated January 22, 2023, so verify the behavior with your installed OBS and macOS versions: OBS macOS Screen Capture.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio. Select Create → Go Live, then use the Stream tab to create an encoder stream or select an existing setup. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the workflow.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. In the Live Control Room, find the stream settings and copy the server URL and key shown for the stream. The key tells YouTube which encoder feed to accept. Treat it as a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in OBS. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. Open OBS → Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream key. If your OBS setup presents a server field or uses a custom configuration, enter YouTube’s server URL as well. Use RTMPS where offered; YouTube recommends the encrypted connection. Confirm the selected service and settings before continuing.
- Start the encoder feed. In OBS, click Start Streaming. Return to YouTube Live Control Room and wait for the incoming video preview and stream-health status.
- Review, then go live. Check the preview, picture, audio and health indicators. When the control room shows the feed and the controls are ready, use YouTube’s go-live action if required. The OBS feed reaching YouTube is not by itself proof that the public broadcast has started.
Test the stream and protect upload headroom
YouTube advises testing the encoder ahead of the broadcast with representative movement and audio, then checking stream health and that the stream is accessible on the channel or watch page and on mobile devices. Monitor the sound and picture during the broadcast rather than assuming that a successful initial preview guarantees a stable session. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and live-streaming tips.

YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. If you send primary and backup streams, include both bitrates before adding that headroom. This is a platform recommendation, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable: other devices sharing the network and network interruptions can reduce the bandwidth available to the Mac. There is no single bitrate or resolution that suits every Mac and connection. Set OBS output to a quality the Mac can encode while maintaining the recommended headroom, and validate it with the actual file, motion, audio and network conditions you expect to use.

Long loops, archives, copyright and monetization
A loop setting repeats the media file; it does not ensure that OBS, the Mac, power, internet connection or YouTube will operate without interruption. For a long broadcast, test the complete configuration for a meaningful period and plan to monitor stream health. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended; that archive guidance does not promise uninterrupted operation. Check the current YouTube encoder guidance.
Use only media you have rights to stream. Copyright issues are separate from whether the file loops correctly. Monetization is also not guaranteed by the streaming method: YouTube’s monetization policies say monetized content should be original and authentic, not mass-produced or repetitive without distinct creative, educational or other viewer value. A loop alone does not establish whether a particular channel or stream qualifies. Review the current YouTube channel monetization policies.

Troubleshooting common OBS-to-YouTube problems
