In HandBrake, set Destination to a folder on a connected external drive before you start encoding. Check that the drive is mounted, writable, has room for an output whose size you have estimated with a short test, and will remain connected and powered overnight. Keep the PC awake for the job; HandBrake’s documentation does not specify an operating-system sleep setting, so use your computer’s normal power controls.
Choose an output location that is not your PC’s internal drive
- Open the source in HandBrake. If it contains multiple titles, select the one you intend to encode.
- Choose a preset for the intended playback device. HandBrake describes Fast 1080p30 as a broad-compatibility starting point for general computer playback or an unknown target, not a universally ideal setting. Use a preset suited to your device and source when you know them.
- Set the destination. In HandBrake’s Destination controls, browse to a folder on your connected external drive and enter the output filename. Destination specifies both the output location and filename. Before starting, check the selected folder and name carefully.
- Check the external drive. Confirm it is mounted, writable and has free capacity. Keep it connected and powered until the encode finishes. These are practical precautions; choosing a separate destination is the HandBrake feature that makes the workflow possible.
An external hard drive or portable SSD can keep the encoded file off the internal drive. Choose one based on your available space, connection, portability and budget; no particular model or capacity is established here. Do not assume the final encode will fit based only on the source file’s size.
Estimate whether the encode can finish overnight
There is no reliable universal conversion from video duration to encode time. HandBrake says encoding can take minutes or hours, depending on the video, settings and computer. A short representative encode is more useful than a blanket time estimate.
- Use the preset and settings you plan to use for the full video.
- Encode a representative section, then note how long it took and the output size it produced.
- Use those observations as a rough guide for the full job, allowing extra time and free space. A short sample cannot guarantee the rest will encode at the same rate or produce a proportional file size.
- If either the expected finish or available destination space is tight, adjust the settings or free up more space before starting the full encode.
Encoder settings trade off speed, visual quality and output size. Hardware encoding can be faster when compatible hardware and drivers are detected, but availability varies by PC, and hardware encoding does not eliminate all CPU work. Compare the results on the playback device that matters to you; there is no universal hardware-versus-software winner.

Queue jobs without overwriting earlier output
If you have several videos, HandBrake’s queue can process them in sequence. Its queue guide says automatic names that include the title give jobs unique filenames to avoid overwriting one another. Check that each queued job has the intended destination and a distinct name rather than relying on automatic naming without inspection.
Keep the computer running and verify the result
- Use your operating system’s power settings to prevent sleep during the encode. This is practical operating advice, not a HandBrake-specific setting documented here.
- Before leaving the PC, confirm that the job has started, progress is advancing, and the destination is the external drive.
- Keep the PC, drive and any required power connection on through completion.
- When the encode finishes, open and review the output file before deleting or moving the source.
Understand what storage and memory figures mean
HandBrake lists 150 MB for the application itself, plus minimum system-memory figures of 16 GB for transcoding standard and high-definition video and 32 GB for 4K Ultra HD video. Those figures describe the app and system requirements; they do not estimate the capacity needed for an encoded video. Output size depends on content and settings, so use a test encode and leave additional free space rather than treating the source size or app requirements as a sizing rule.
