Use FFmpeg’s xfade filter in a -filter_complex graph, then encode the filtered video and send it to YouTube Live. Set duration for the blend length and offset for when it begins. Video and audio transitions are separate: use acrossfade if the clips’ audio should blend, or map a continuous music or narration track.
Crossfade two videos live with FFmpeg
This minimal example makes a two-second video fade that begins eight seconds into the first input’s timeline:

first.mp4andsecond.mp4with your video files. - In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the ingest address and stream key for your broadcast. Replace the example destination with those values; keep the key private.
- Adjust the transition and timing values, then run the command. The graph labels the filtered video output
[v], and-map "[v]"sends that output to the encoder.
The example assumes compatible video inputs. Its -map 0:a? selects the first input’s audio only if that input has an audio stream; it does not crossfade audio between the files. FFmpeg’s filter documentation describes xfade and its transition, duration, and offset options. The FFmpeg command-line documentation covers complex filtergraphs and mapping labeled outputs.
Set transition timing and chain more clips
What duration and offset mean
duration=2 requests a two-second transition. offset=8 starts it at timestamp eight on the first input’s timeline. The offset is not the second clip’s start time in a finished sequence; it identifies when the transition begins in the active filter timeline.

Adding a third or later video
Chain another xfade using the previous filter’s output and the next input’s video stream. Calculate each new offset against the timeline already produced by the graph, accounting for the overlap removed by earlier transitions. Clip lengths and chosen transition durations determine the correct values, so do not simply use each source clip’s original start timestamp.
Choose what happens to the audio
Blend the clip audio
xfade handles video only. To blend audio from two clips, use the separate acrossfade filter in the complex graph and map its labeled output as the audio stream. Its duration controls the audio transition; see FFmpeg’s filter documentation for the filter’s options.

Keep music or narration continuous
If the broadcast should have one uninterrupted music or narration source, map that intended audio stream instead of blending the source clips’ audio. Choose mappings based on the actual inputs and desired program sound. The sample command’s optional audio mapping is only an example, not a universal choice.
Fix xfade compatibility and encoding errors
Filter initialization fails
The example assumes compatible streams. If FFmpeg reports mismatched parameters or cannot initialize xfade, inspect the installed build’s filter help and check whether the inputs need normalization to consistent frame rate, time base, dimensions, or pixel format. Which adjustments are needed depends on the files; there is no single normalization chain established for every pair.

Do not use video stream copy
A crossfade changes decoded video frames, so FFmpeg must encode the filtered result. -c:v copy cannot apply the effect. FFmpeg documents filtering as a typical reason to transcode and says streams are transcoded by default unless copying is requested.
Check the live destination and stream health
Confirm that the ingest address and key are the ones displayed for the current YouTube broadcast, and that your outgoing connection can sustain the chosen settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingest. Its current guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance for its resolution, frame-rate, codec, and bitrate recommendations.

As one example from YouTube’s bitrate table, the page accessed in 2026 lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps with H.264. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular machine or internet connection can sustain the stream. YouTube advises testing with similar audio and video movement before going live and monitoring stream health during the broadcast.

Use the live filter-and-encode approach when the transition must happen as the program is transmitted. If the sequence can be prepared in advance, an offline render lets you inspect the finished transitions before the broadcast. A hard cut avoids a blend altogether. For either workflow, decide separately whether clip audio should crossfade or whether the program needs a continuous audio source.
