You can end an encoder-based YouTube Live stream by stopping the content sent from your encoder. For a scheduled stream, YouTube also instructs you to click End Stream. But YouTube’s guidance does not confirm that a queued loop’s playlist membership or playback position will carry over to a new live event. Before ending the stream, identify whether your videos are queued in your encoder or associated with a YouTube playlist, and verify the playlist and position in the tool that controls playback.
First, identify which playlist you mean
“The playlist” can refer to videos queued by the encoder or a YouTube playlist associated with the stream or its watch page. These are different setups. YouTube’s instructions explain how to end a stream and reuse event settings, but do not say whether either type of playlist—or its current playback position—persists when you end one live event and start another.
- Encoder queue: Check the encoder or playback software that is sending the videos. Confirm whether its queue is saved and where playback will start when you resume or launch another output session.
- YouTube playlist: Check the playlist and the relevant event or watch page in YouTube. Do not assume a new event will inherit the previous event’s playlist or position.
Because continuity is not established in YouTube’s published guidance, record the current item and position and verify the next event’s playlist before going live again.
End an immediate encoder stream
- In the encoder or playback software, stop sending content to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder guide says: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.”
- Confirm in YouTube Studio or the live watch page that the stream has ended.
- Before closing or clearing the encoder project, check that its playlist or queue is saved and note the current playback position if you need to return to it.
End a scheduled stream
- Open the scheduled event in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Click End Stream, then stop sending content from the encoder, following YouTube’s documented sequence.
- Confirm the event has ended. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; this is an archive of the ended stream, not confirmation that it will resume as the same event.
- Check the Live tab in YouTube Studio if you need to locate previous, current, or upcoming streams.
Start another scheduled event
- In Live Control Room, open the Manage tab and schedule a stream.
- Choose Reuse settings to copy the prior stream’s metadata, settings, and stream key, or choose Create new to configure a separate event.
- Review the copied settings before scheduling. YouTube’s settings help says auto-start and auto-stop selections are copied as well.
- Set up or verify the playlist in the encoder or YouTube, depending on which tool controls it. Reusing event configuration does not establish that playlist membership or playback position is preserved.
- Preview the event in Live Control Room, confirm it is accessible from the channel and watch pages, and start sending content when ready.
Scheduling can make an event appear as upcoming, let viewers request a reminder, and give you a URL to share. These features do not guarantee continuity of the previous event’s watch page or playlist.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Checks before restarting
- Playback: Confirm the intended files are queued and decide whether the next event should resume at the current item or start from the beginning.
- Event configuration: Check the title, description, visibility, and other event details even when using Reuse settings.
- Stream key: Verify that the encoder is configured with the key for the event you are about to start. Reused settings include the prior key, but review it rather than assuming it is right for every setup.
- Preview and access: Check the Live Control Room preview and verify the event can be opened from the channel and watch pages.
- Failover and recording: YouTube recommends testing encoder failover and checking that local archive files are intact.
- Shutdown: After the event has stopped on YouTube, stop the encoder as well.
Common problems and what to check
The new stream starts at the wrong video or position
Check the encoder’s queue and playback position first. If YouTube itself controls the playlist, inspect that playlist and the new event. YouTube’s guidance does not specify automatic playlist or position recovery between separate live events.
The old event appears archived, but viewers cannot continue watching it live
An archive is a recording of the ended stream. YouTube’s statement that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived does not mean the event remains live or restarts as the same event. Create or start the next event separately.

The encoder connects with unexpected settings
If you chose Reuse settings, review the copied metadata, stream key, and auto-start or auto-stop selections. Choose Create new if you need a separate configuration.
The event is not visible where expected
Check the event in Live Control Room and the Live tab in YouTube Studio, then verify access from both the channel and watch pages. Scheduling an event can provide an upcoming listing and shareable URL, but does not establish that the previous event’s URL continues to work for the new stream.
