To play music over a silent video loop on YouTube Live, send the looping video and a music source together through an encoder, then preview the feed in YouTube Studio before you start. Use music you have permission to broadcast; if you keep the livestream as an archive, make sure the license covers that replay too. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, and a match can interrupt the broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube requires the channel to be verified and to have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; its getting-started guidance also sets a minimum age of 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guidance.
- An encoder that can send your loop as video and your selected music as audio. YouTube supports encoder-based streams, but the exact controls for looping and mixing depend on the encoder; there is no universal YouTube button sequence for this.
- A music track whose terms permit your intended live use, and archived use if you plan to retain the stream.
- The stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Treat the key like a credential: it tells YouTube to accept an incoming feed.
You do not need to buy a particular mixer, audio interface, or other physical audio gear just to combine digital video and music. YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to get started. Choose an encoder based on whether it accepts the video and audio inputs you need and can reliably send the stream.
Choose music that is cleared for a livestream
Rights for an uploaded video or ordinary online playback do not automatically cover a live broadcast. YouTube’s terms put responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights. A license should explicitly cover livestreaming, and, if applicable, the archived video, monetization, the territories where viewers may watch, and any attribution conditions.
Safer starting points
- YouTube Audio Library: YouTube describes its Audio Library as a source of royalty-free music and sound effects and recommends it for copyright-safe choices. Check the individual track for any attribution requirement. See YouTube Audio Library guidance.
- Your own music: Original music can be a straightforward choice, provided collaborators, samples, and other incorporated material are also cleared for the broadcast and any archive.
- Creator Music: YouTube describes this catalog for monetized videos in certain regions. Availability and permissions depend on the region and the terms for the specific track. Do not assume a track permits livestreaming or archiving; check the current track terms. See YouTube Creator Music guidance.
- Third-party catalog: Read the actual license for live broadcasts, archived VOD, monetization, territory, and attribution. If the rights holder uses Content ID, ask them to allowlist your channel before the stream.
Giving credit, seeing a “free” label, or using only a short excerpt does not by itself grant permission. YouTube says even a few seconds of copyrighted material can create copyright issues. Fair use or fair dealing depends on the facts of a specific case; YouTube says only a court can make that determination. See YouTube’s common copyright myths guidance.

Set up the loop and music in your encoder
- Prepare your sources. Select the silent video file as the encoder’s video source and the cleared music track as its audio source. Set the video to repeat or loop in the encoder’s source or playlist controls. The label and location vary by encoder, so consult that encoder’s documentation rather than assuming a universal setting.
- Connect to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s YouTube or custom-server output fields. Do not share the key publicly.
- Review the outgoing feed. Start the encoder’s connection and inspect the Live Control Room preview before going live. Confirm that the image is moving or repeating as intended, the music is audible, and neither level is distorted or unexpectedly quiet.
- Test before a public broadcast. Where appropriate, use a private or unlisted test stream. Check that the video reaches the end and loops, the audio continues across the loop point, and the preview remains stable. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring, but does not prescribe a universal bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or mixer setting for every encoder and source.
- Start and monitor the livestream. When the preview is right, start the live broadcast using the controls for your chosen workflow. Keep YouTube Studio open and monitor the audio and video quality and any warnings. YouTube specifically advises creators to “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.” See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Review the archive if you keep one. After the stream ends, check the archived video for a Content ID claim. YouTube says claims on archived livestreams are made after the live stream ends; a license for the live broadcast should not be assumed to include the replay.
Understand Content ID interruptions
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A detected match may produce a warning or placeholder image, temporarily interrupt the stream, or lead to termination if the content continues. YouTube says that even if you have a license, the live stream can be interrupted when the channel is not on the rights holder’s Content ID allowlist. Ask the rights holder to add your channel before broadcasting licensed music if the track is subject to Content ID. Details are in YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and YouTube’s Content ID guidance for live streams.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| The video appears, but there is no music. | The encoder is not sending the selected audio source, or its level is muted or too low. | Check the encoder’s audio-source selection and meters, then listen to the Live Control Room preview before starting publicly. |
| The music plays once and stops. | The audio track is not configured to repeat with the video loop. | Check the encoder’s playlist or source behavior. Verify that audio continues through the video loop point in a test stream. |
| The stream is interrupted despite having a license. | A Content ID match may have occurred, and the channel may not be allowlisted. | Follow the Live Control Room warning and contact the rights holder to request Content ID allowlisting. A license alone does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming. |
| A claim appears on the archived stream. | The archive was identified after the live broadcast, or the license did not cover the replay. | Review the claim and the track’s license terms for archived VOD. Do not assume live-use permission includes an archive. |
| The preview does not show the expected loop or mix. | The encoder’s source, repeat, or audio routing settings may not match the intended output. | Check the chosen encoder’s documentation and test privately or unlisted before going live. YouTube’s guidance does not define encoder-specific controls. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If this is a recurring 24/7 YouTube loop, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams uploaded video at the quality supplied, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly access is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not go live from a camera.
