For a 30-day month, the shortcut is Mbps × 324 = GB transferred. This estimates the stream’s payload before network overhead, retransmissions, restarts, or unrelated server traffic.
Calculate data transfer from bitrate and runtime
Use this formula when estimating the outbound contribution feed from a cloud machine to YouTube:
Decimal GB = Mbps × seconds streamed ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000
The factor of 8 converts bits to bytes; dividing by 1,000,000,000 converts bytes to decimal GB. For an uninterrupted stream, the month-length shortcuts are:

These are arithmetic estimates of payload volume, not a guarantee of the amount a provider will bill. GB here is decimal; binary gibibytes (GiB) are smaller, with 1 GiB equal to 1.0737 decimal GB.

For a stream that is not live all month, use its actual runtime in seconds rather than a full-month shortcut. If the bitrate varies, use a representative average bitrate over the period, not simply the peak setting.
Choose the right traffic leg to estimate
“Monthly bandwidth” is often used to mean monthly data transfer, but a cloud-hosted YouTube stream can involve different network paths. Estimate the one that applies to your setup.

Cloud machine sending a feed to YouTube
Use the bitrate of the encoded feed leaving the cloud machine, multiplied by its uptime. YouTube says it transcodes a live stream into different output formats for viewers, so a basic cloud-to-YouTube estimate is for the contribution feed—not all viewer playback traffic.

Cloud service also delivering video directly to viewers
Estimate viewer delivery separately: viewers × average delivered Mbps per viewer × viewing seconds ÷ 8, then convert bytes to GB or GiB. The actual total depends on the delivery architecture, viewer-hours, bitrate selection, and caching. AWS’s deployment guidance uses viewer count and average Mbps per viewer in its cost example, separate from ingest and packaging.
Multiple renditions
Do not multiply one viewer’s traffic by every rendition in an adaptive-bitrate ladder: a viewer typically receives one selected rendition at a time. But if your cloud service ingests or packages several renditions simultaneously, add their bitrates to estimate that service leg. AWS’s MediaPackage pricing example sums five renditions to 9.5 Mbps before converting the rate to hourly volume.

Find a realistic bitrate input
The encoder’s configured or measured average bitrate is the best input when available. Resolution alone is not enough: frame rate, codec, content complexity, and encoding settings also affect bitrate.
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists these recommended H.264 ingest settings. They are starting points, not measured monthly averages or a promise that a particular stream will hold those rates:

For a budget, substitute the actual bitrate from your streaming setup. YouTube also advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health.

Turn the volume estimate into a cost estimate
Data volume alone is not a hosting quote. Depending on the architecture, a cloud bill may include encoding, ingest, packaging or origination, storage, and CDN or internet egress. A feed sent to YouTube is a different cost case from a stream delivered to viewers through a separate player or CDN.
When comparing hosting plans or estimating cloud egress, check:
- Included monthly transfer and overage rates.
- Whether delivery is billed as cloud egress, CDN delivery, or both.
- Region and expected viewer-hours, if viewers are served directly.
- Average delivered bitrate and cache-hit assumptions.
- Separate encoding, ingest, packaging, and storage charges.
- Whether the estimate covers only the feed to YouTube or direct viewer delivery too.
AWS’s MediaPackage pricing page gives a provider-specific 24/7 live-linear example: an aggregate 9.5 Mbps across five renditions works out to 4.175 GB per hour using the page’s stated conversions. It illustrates that service’s architecture; it is not a universal price or estimate for every YouTube setup. AWS’s deployment guide likewise uses stated viewer assumptions, region, cache-hit ratio, and selected AWS services, and notes prices can change.

An AWS for M&E FAQ published in 2019 describes a 15 Mbps contribution feed and 11.76 GB per hour for one live channel output. That is a historical configuration example, not current pricing or a general recommendation.
