You can run a continuous YouTube Live stream from a low-cost VPS if you keep the workload simple: use FFmpeg to loop compatible media without re-encoding, choose a bitrate the server can sustain on its outbound connection, and supervise the process while checking YouTube’s stream health. There is no universal minimum RAM or vCPU count; requirements depend on whether FFmpeg copies the source or encodes it in real time.

First, decide whether FFmpeg needs to encode

The biggest determinant of server load is whether FFmpeg can pass through the source video and audio or must decode and encode them in real time. These are different workloads, so a VPS that handles one may struggle with the other.

Stream-copy or remux compatible media

When the source codecs and stream settings are compatible with YouTube’s ingest requirements, FFmpeg can copy the audio and video streams into a suitable output container rather than re-encoding them. This usually reduces CPU work, which makes it the first approach to test on a limited VPS. Copying does not repair an incompatible codec, frame rate, resolution, or other source property; inspect the actual file and verify the resulting live feed.

Re-encode only when necessary

Re-encoding can be necessary to change a codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or audio format. It takes substantially more processing than copying, and the load depends on the source, chosen output settings, and encoder. A low-cost server’s advertised vCPU and RAM figures alone cannot establish whether it can encode your particular video continuously. Test the intended configuration under sustained load before relying on it.

RAM matters, but it is not a substitute for adequate CPU or outbound capacity. A bitrate-limited stream can use modest memory and still fail if the VPS cannot sustain the required network egress. Do not assume a particular RAM or vCPU minimum without testing the source and encoding mode you plan to use.

Choose stream settings that fit the VPS connection

Start with a conservative resolution and frame rate, then match the outgoing bitrate to the VPS’s reliable sustained outbound capacity. YouTube advises testing upload speed and selecting a quality that fits the connection. Its current settings table lists these H.264 recommendations:

Output YouTube-recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
480p at 30 fps 4 Mbps

These are YouTube configuration recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can continuously deliver that bitrate. Leave room for network variation rather than selecting a target at the edge of what the host can sustain. If the connection is unstable at your chosen setting, lower the bitrate or output quality and test again.

YouTube’s current guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; it specifies CBR, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Recommended bitrates vary by codec and resolution, so consult YouTube’s current encoder settings for the exact combination you intend to send. The figures above are current recommendations from that page, accessed in 2026, not independently tested thresholds.

Set up a headless FFmpeg loop

A VPS workflow has four parts: get the media onto the server, configure FFmpeg to loop it, send it to the YouTube ingest endpoint, and keep the process supervised. The following is an implementation outline, not an official YouTube command; exact FFmpeg options depend on the input file and whether it needs conversion.

  1. Inspect the source. Confirm its container, video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio presence, and bitrate with a media-inspection tool. Decide whether stream-copy is compatible with your desired YouTube output or whether you must re-encode.
  2. Prepare the media. Upload the file to the VPS and ensure there is enough storage for the file and any additional assets used in the loop. For a playlist, check that every item has compatible streams and can be read by the chosen FFmpeg workflow.
  3. Configure looping and output. Set FFmpeg to repeat the file or playlist and emit a continuous stream. Use stream-copy options only when the source is compatible; otherwise specify an encoder and output settings suited to the server and your YouTube target. Ensure video keyframes follow YouTube’s interval guidance and audio uses a supported format.
  4. Use the YouTube ingest details. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and obtain its server URL and stream key. Configure FFmpeg to send to the appropriate endpoint using RTMPS where supported. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in public logs, screenshots, repositories, or shared command history.
  5. Run a representative test. Send a test long enough to include the media’s typical motion and audio. Confirm the picture, sound, and reported stream health in YouTube Studio before relying on the setup for continuous viewing.

For ordinary low-latency streaming, RTMPS is the sensible default where supported. YouTube recommends it as an encrypted extension to RTMP; Google’s protocol documentation describes the RTMPS endpoint, valid path, TLS connection, and port 443 requirements. HLS and DASH are segment-based alternatives that can support different codecs or features but generally introduce higher latency. See YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison and RTMPS ingestion documentation before changing protocols.

Keep the process alive and verify the stream

Running FFmpeg in a terminal is not process supervision: a disconnected session, process failure, or server restart can stop the feed. Use a service manager or another process supervisor to start FFmpeg at boot, restart it after an unexpected exit, and retain logs you can inspect. Configure restart behavior with care so a bad command or invalid key does not create a rapid, endless restart loop.

A supervisor can restart a failed FFmpeg process, but it cannot by itself prove YouTube is receiving a good stream. Check both sides:

  • On the VPS: confirm the FFmpeg process is active, inspect its logs for connection or encoding errors, and watch CPU, memory, and outbound network use over time.
  • In YouTube Studio: monitor the stream preview, health status, and warnings or messages. YouTube’s Live API also defines statuses and diagnoses including low bitrate, unsupported video codec, no audio, and video starvation.

YouTube recommends testing the stream before going live and monitoring stream health and messages. A running FFmpeg process only shows that the process is alive; it does not establish that viewers are receiving a healthy feed. Use the health message to choose the next fix rather than assuming every interruption is a server-resource problem.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to check Next action
YouTube reports low bitrate or the video stalls VPS egress, network stability, or an output bitrate beyond sustained capacity Check outbound use and FFmpeg logs; lower the bitrate or quality and retest against the host’s sustained connection.
YouTube reports an unsupported video codec Source or encoder output codec Verify the actual output codec. Use a compatible source for stream-copy or configure a supported encoder and retest.
YouTube reports no audio Source audio track, mapping, or audio output Check whether the media contains an audio stream and whether FFmpeg is passing or encoding it as AAC or MP3.
YouTube reports video starvation Input read speed, VPS load, or an unstable connection Check FFmpeg logs, CPU load, storage reads, and outbound network behavior while the stream is affected.
FFmpeg exits or fails to reconnect Process supervision, endpoint configuration, stream key, or connectivity Inspect the exit logs and configured server URL and key; confirm the supervisor restarts the process after a genuine failure.
CPU is saturated during playback Real-time re-encoding or settings too demanding for the VPS Check whether compatible media can be stream-copied. If encoding is required, reduce output demands or choose a host that sustains the workload.

When a VPS is the wrong trade-off

A VPS gives you control over the encoder and process, but you are responsible for testing compatibility, tuning resource use, maintaining supervision, and checking stream health. If you would rather not maintain that server workflow, StreamNeo is an alternative to try first: it keeps uploaded videos looping to YouTube from the cloud, supports the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud. Your video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo or start your free first day.
