You can send a video file from a Synology NAS to YouTube Live with FFmpeg if your exact NAS model, DSM release, and FFmpeg build support the required codecs and secure RTMPS connection. The basic workflow is to create a YouTube Live event, use its current ingest URL and private stream key, then run FFmpeg in real time. Synology compatibility and encoding capacity vary, so test the setup on your device before relying on it for a live broadcast.

Before you start: check what your Synology NAS supports

Synology models differ in CPU architecture and available DSM packages. The available documentation does not establish a universal model-by-model FFmpeg or Container Manager compatibility list, nor does it establish a real-time encoding ceiling for any particular NAS. Confirm support for your exact model and DSM release before choosing how to run FFmpeg.

  • Check whether FFmpeg is available as a suitable native package or binary for your device.
  • If you plan to use Container Manager, confirm it is available on your model and DSM release, and that the chosen container image supports the NAS CPU architecture.
  • Check that the FFmpeg build includes the encoders and protocols your command needs. The example below assumes H.264 encoding through libx264, AAC audio encoding, FLV muxing, and RTMPS support.
  • Make sure the NAS can read the media file and that its network can make an outbound connection to YouTube’s ingest service.

Synology documents a camera-broadcast feature for Surveillance Station, but that is a separate workflow and does not establish FFmpeg support for a particular NAS. This guide covers a media file sent through FFmpeg.

Create a YouTube Live event and get its ingest details

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast you intend to use.
  2. Copy the current stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
  3. Use the exact values YouTube provides. The YouTube Live API allows the ingestion URL and stream name to be supplied separately or combined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Do not copy a sample URL or key from an article in place of the event’s current details.

The stream key is a credential, not a public channel URL. Avoid pasting it into screenshots, public posts, or logs you share. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s streaming settings.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose a deployment route and verify FFmpeg

There are two practical packaging routes, but neither is universally available across Synology devices. Choose based on what works for your model and what you can maintain.

Route What to verify Trade-off to consider
Native package or binary Availability for the DSM release and NAS architecture; required encoders, muxer, and RTMPS/TLS support. Can avoid container setup, but package availability and build features depend on the device and source.
Container Container Manager support for the model and DSM release; image architecture; FFmpeg codecs and RTMPS/TLS support; access to media paths and logs. Can package dependencies together where supported, but adds image, volume, permissions, and restart configuration to manage.

Whichever route you choose, verify the executable before building the live workflow. For example, run ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -encoders in the environment where the stream will run, then confirm the required H.264 and AAC encoders are present. Check the build’s protocol support as well; a command that works on another computer may fail on a NAS build without RTMPS or TLS support.

Set video, bitrate, audio, and keyframes

YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). For a straightforward SDR setup, H.264 with AAC is a practical baseline. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s current encoder settings for the current recommendations.

The following H.264 bitrate figures are YouTube’s minimum and recommended ingestion bitrates on the page reviewed 2026-10-03. They are not a promise that a Synology NAS can encode at that rate, and your upload connection needs reliable headroom above the stream’s total bitrate.

720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are resolution- and frame-rate-specific recommendations, not universal targets. Choose a bitrate appropriate to your source, test the NAS’s sustained performance, and ensure your measured upload can carry video plus audio without competing traffic causing instability. The sample command uses a 5 Mbps video target as an example only; change it to match your output and the current YouTube guidance.

Send a file to YouTube with FFmpeg

FFmpeg documents real-time streaming with -re, an FLV output, and an RTMP-family destination. It also documents -stream_loop -1 for looping an input indefinitely. In a command, put input options before the input they affect. Here is an illustrative command shape for a 30 fps H.264/AAC stream:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i /path/to/video.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 5000k -maxrate 5000k -bufsize 10000k
  -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv
  'rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_HOST/YOUTUBE_APP/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'

This is a template, not a tested Synology command. The -g 60 and -keyint_min 60 settings assume 30 fps, producing a two-second GOP; for a different frame rate, adjust the keyframe cadence so the interval remains about two seconds. The sample also assumes the file has audio and that the FFmpeg build provides the named encoders, FLV muxer, and RTMPS support.

  1. Replace /path/to/video.mp4 with the actual path visible inside the environment running FFmpeg. In a container, this must be the container’s mounted path, not merely the NAS host path.
  2. Replace the destination with the full current RTMPS ingest address and stream key from YouTube. The sample’s host, app, and key are placeholders and must not be copied literally.
  3. Adjust resolution and frame rate if needed. If the input already has suitable codecs and container characteristics, a stream-copy approach may reduce encoding load, but only use it when the source is compatible with YouTube’s requirements and the chosen output muxer.
  4. Run the command and watch FFmpeg’s output for connection, encoding, and frame-drop errors. Confirm the incoming stream appears in Live Control Room before relying on it.

For a one-time stream rather than an indefinite loop, omit -stream_loop -1. When audio is absent, remove the audio encoding options and verify the resulting stream configuration is acceptable in YouTube’s health feedback.

Use RTMPS and validate before going live

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Use the RTMPS endpoint supplied for the event rather than assuming a fixed host or path. Google’s implementation guidance specifies port 443 and hostname/SNI requirements; some FFmpeg builds handle these details internally, but the actual NAS build must still connect successfully. A cleartext RTMP attempt against an RTMPS endpoint can time out.

  1. Start with a test event or an appropriate preflight window and use representative audio and motion, not a static image alone.
  2. Check YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health messages and verify the incoming picture and sound.
  3. Monitor FFmpeg on the NAS for sustained frame delivery, network errors, and encoding speed. A command starting successfully does not prove the device can maintain the chosen output over time.
  4. Confirm that the audience-facing broadcast is actually configured and started in Live Control Room. The FFmpeg process delivering media and the YouTube broadcast are distinct resources; a looping FFmpeg process does not by itself guarantee that the broadcast is live.

YouTube’s stream resource can report active, inactive, or error states, with configuration issues such as low bitrate, unsupported audio codec, or an overly long keyframe interval. YouTube’s setup advice is to test with similar audio and motion before the event and monitor stream health while live; see YouTube encoder settings.

Secure the key and make the process maintainable

  • Do not publish the stream key or store it in a world-readable script. Restrict access to the command, configuration, and logs that may contain it.
  • For recurring streams, make sure the process can be restarted after a NAS reboot and that its logs are available for diagnosis. The exact restart mechanism depends on whether FFmpeg runs natively or in a container.
  • Check storage access and permissions after DSM or container changes; a path that previously worked may no longer be mounted or readable.
  • Review the media rights before streaming. A valid stream key does not grant permission to rebroadcast music, gameplay, or other copyrighted material. YouTube may restrict or interrupt streams when rights or policy issues arise.

Troubleshooting common failures

YouTube receives no video

  • Re-copy the current ingest URL and stream key from the selected Live Control Room event; verify that the full destination, including the stream name/key, is present.
  • Check that FFmpeg is reading the intended file and that it has not exited because the path is wrong or the container mount is missing.
  • Confirm the broadcast itself has been configured and started in Live Control Room; an active FFmpeg process alone is not the audience-facing live broadcast.

Connection or TLS errors

  • Verify the endpoint begins with the RTMPS scheme and is the current YouTube-provided destination.
  • Check outbound access to port 443 and confirm the FFmpeg build supports TLS and the required hostname/SNI behavior.
  • If the connection times out, check that you have not attempted cleartext RTMP against an RTMPS endpoint.

YouTube reports stream-health warnings

  • For a bitrate warning, compare the configured video rate with YouTube’s current recommendation for the actual resolution and frame rate; also consider audio bitrate and upload variation.
  • For audio errors, verify that the selected audio codec and sample rate are supported and that the source actually has an audio stream.
  • For keyframe warnings, adjust GOP/keyframe settings to a roughly two-second interval and do not exceed YouTube’s four-second guidance.

The NAS drops frames or cannot keep up

  • Reduce resolution, frame rate, or encoding load and test again. No model-specific sustained performance figure is established here, so judge by the exact device under your real workload.
  • Where codecs and container are already suitable, test stream copy instead of re-encoding; this is not appropriate for every input and does not remove the need to check YouTube compatibility.
  • Check whether other NAS tasks are competing for CPU, storage, or network capacity during the stream.

The video loops, but the event ends

  • Check the broadcast’s status and settings in Live Control Room. The FFmpeg loop only keeps sending media; YouTube’s broadcast state is managed separately.
  • Check whether FFmpeg encountered an error or lost the connection, then inspect YouTube’s stream health and restart the sender or broadcast as appropriate.
