Shuffle the video-file list before FFmpeg reads it. The FFmpeg concat demuxer plays entries in the order written, so creating a randomized concat script gives you one shuffled sequence; looping that script repeats the same sequence rather than reshuffling it.
How the shuffle works
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a script containing one file directive for each input. It does not randomize those entries: the shuffle must happen before FFmpeg opens the script. The procedure below creates one randomized order and sends its concatenated output to YouTube Live.
Prepare and shuffle the video list
- Choose the files. Put the intended local videos in a dedicated directory, or otherwise create a list containing only the files you want included. Review the list before streaming so that unrelated files are not picked up.
- Randomize the list. On Linux, the
shufutility can randomize lines. For example, this produces a null-delimited shuffled path list:find ./videos -type f -name '*.mp4' -print0 | shuf -z > /tmp/shuffled-paths - Convert the paths to concat directives. Build
list.txtwith onefiledirective per path, using FFmpeg concat-script quoting and escaping rules. Do not paste arbitrary filenames into the script without escaping them: spaces, quotes, and especially newline characters can make a naïve conversion fail or change what gets read. Null delimiters protect the intermediate shell list, but the paths still need correct concat-script encoding.
The command above is only the path-list stage, not a complete universal script generator. Shell utilities and filename edge cases vary; check the resulting list.txt and test it with representative files before using it for a broadcast. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Check whether the files can be concatenated
Concat demuxing is not a general-purpose format converter. FFmpeg expects the files to have the same streams, including compatible codecs and time bases. Differences in codecs, stream counts, or timing can cause failures, timestamp problems, or artifacts.

- If the files have compatible stream structure and parameters, try stream copy to avoid re-encoding.
- If they differ, normalize or re-encode them to consistent streams and parameters before concatenating. This takes additional processing resources, but it can make the output consistent.
- If later clips start at unexpected times because a file’s stored duration is inaccurate, FFmpeg’s concat script supports a
durationdirective to override a file duration where needed.
There is no universally best choice between stream copy and re-encoding: it depends on the files’ compatibility, available CPU or GPU resources, and the consistency you need from the output.
Send the shuffled sequence to YouTube Live
- Get the ingest details. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast. Treat the key like a password: do not put a real key in a public script, screenshot, or article example.
- Choose output settings. Match the output codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to YouTube’s current guidance and your upload capacity. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no longer than four seconds). Its recommended bitrate ranges vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec; use the range for your actual output rather than copying a single generic value. Confirm that your FFmpeg build and selected YouTube stream key support the combination.
- Use secure ingest. YouTube Help recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Use the RTMPS ingest URL and key provided for your live stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
- Run FFmpeg and monitor the broadcast. A schematic command shape is:
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i list.txt [encoding options] -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL"
Replace the bracketed part with the options matching your tested output settings, and set the destination variable securely to the RTMPS URL and stream key. The example is not a tested, one-size-fits-all command. Test with representative video and audio, then monitor stream health in YouTube during the broadcast.
The -safe 0 option permits absolute paths and paths outside the concat demuxer’s default safe subset. Use it only with a list you trust: a concat script can refer to local paths, so do not feed it an untrusted file.

Choose between a fixed shuffle and reshuffling each cycle
Repeat the same randomized order
For a stable playlist, generate one shuffled script and loop that concat input. Each pass follows the same order. This is simpler and makes the sequence reproducible, but a viewer who watches multiple cycles will see the same progression.
Generate a new order for every cycle
A new permutation requires external orchestration: a wrapper or playlist-generation process must create and switch to a newly ordered list. A loop option alone does not reshuffle the script. This approach adds complexity, and replacing the list may require handling transitions or pauses; test that behavior before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.

Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg cannot open a file or reports a malformed concat script: check each path and directive, then verify quoting and escaping. Filenames with spaces, quotes, or newlines are common causes. Regenerate the directives using proper concat-script escaping.
- Some clips fail or playback has glitches or timing jumps: compare their stream counts, codecs, and time bases. Normalize or re-encode files that do not have compatible streams; check stored durations if later timestamps drift.
- The stream starts but YouTube reports poor health or drops it: verify that the bitrate fits your sustained upload capacity and matches YouTube’s guidance for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. Check the keyframe interval, codec and audio format, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health status.
- The stream key is rejected or ingest does not connect: confirm that you copied the current key and matching ingest URL from Live Control Room, that the key is selected for the intended stream, and that the FFmpeg build supports the chosen protocol and codecs. Never expose the key while troubleshooting publicly.
- The order repeats when you expected a new shuffle: the concat script is being replayed as written. Regenerate and switch to a new ordered list for each cycle.
