To send a 24/7 video playlist to YouTube Live from Docker, run FFmpeg in a long-lived container, make the playlist media available inside it, and publish to the current RTMPS ingest address and stream key shown for your YouTube stream. Docker can restart an exited container, but that alone does not guarantee a gap-free reconnect or that playback resumes at the right point. Test the complete playlist, YouTube’s stream health, and recovery behavior before leaving it unattended.

How the Docker-to-YouTube setup fits together

There are two separate YouTube resources involved. A live stream is the incoming audio/video feed that your encoder sends. A live broadcast is the viewer-facing YouTube video. The stream key is a credential used to send the feed; it is not the public URL viewers use to watch.

The pipeline has these parts:

  • A Docker host with access to the video and audio files.
  • An FFmpeg container that reads and sequences the media.
  • A mounted media directory and playlist configuration.
  • The current YouTube ingest address and stream key for the intended stream.
  • A YouTube broadcast associated with the incoming stream.

YouTube documents a 24/7 broadcast workflow in which a separate broadcast can be completed while the continuous feed continues: “However, you don’t stop streaming video since the 24/7 broadcast continues.” The quoted guidance refers to completing a separate interview broadcast while the 24/7 broadcast keeps running. YouTube’s guide to broadcasts and streams was updated 2026-09-14 UTC.

Before you start

  • Confirm that live streaming is available for your channel and that you can create or select the intended broadcast and stream in YouTube Studio.
  • Choose a Docker-capable host with enough storage for the media and a dependable network connection. A 24/7 feed also requires the host to remain powered and connected.
  • Check that the container’s FFmpeg build supports the codecs and protocols your files and chosen YouTube ingest settings require.
  • Decide how the playlist should behave at the end: repeat from the beginning, advance to another item, or follow another defined schedule.
  • Test the actual files and playlist order. Mixed resolutions, codecs, frame rates, audio layouts, and timestamps may require normalization or encoding rather than stream-copying.

Get the correct YouTube ingest settings

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and select or create the stream and broadcast you intend to use.
  2. Copy the current protocol-specific ingest address and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s API represents the ingest address and stream name separately and can also provide a backup address. Use the values for your own channel and intended stream; do not assume every channel or protocol uses the same endpoint. See the LiveStreams API reference.
  3. Keep the key secret. Supply it to the running container through a runtime environment variable or an appropriate secret-management mechanism for your deployment. Do not commit it in a Compose file, bake it into an image layer, or expose it in routine logs.
  4. Keep the feed and broadcast state distinct. FFmpeg sends the feed; YouTube manages the viewer-facing broadcast. Verify that the selected broadcast is associated with the stream you are sending to.

Make the playlist available to FFmpeg

Mount the directory containing the media into the container. Where practical, make the source directory read-only inside the container so the encoder can read files without altering them. Then configure FFmpeg to read the intended files in sequence and produce a continuous output.

There is no single FFmpeg playlist command that is correct for every collection of files. The right input and looping approach depends on whether the playlist is a single file, multiple inputs, or a scheduled sequence, and on how its audio and video timestamps line up. A public 24/7 YouTube stream community example demonstrates a pattern using looped local audio/video inputs and an RTMP destination; treat it as an example, not an official command validated for every media set.

Before using stream-copying, check that all items have compatible codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio layout, and timestamps. If they differ, configure and test an encoding or normalization path that creates a consistent output. Confirm that audio remains present, each transition behaves as intended, and the playlist repeats or advances according to your plan.

Choose an ingest protocol

For a conventional FFmpeg-to-YouTube feed, RTMPS is a practical default when the FFmpeg build and channel settings support it. YouTube describes RTMPS as encrypted and suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. RTMP is also supported, but YouTube’s comparison does not describe it as encrypted. See the YouTube ingestion protocol comparison, updated 2026-06-01 UTC.

HLS is another option for workflows that need its additional codec or HDR possibilities, but its segmented delivery has higher latency than continuous RTMP-style delivery. YouTube’s HLS setup requires HTTPS, TS segments, a rolling media playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and segment durations of 1–4 seconds. Consult YouTube’s HLS setup instructions and confirm that your encoder supports the required configuration before choosing it.

Whichever protocol you use, take the endpoint and stream key from the current YouTube settings for that protocol. Do not copy an ingest hostname or key from an unrelated example.

Run FFmpeg in a long-lived container

  1. Use a maintained FFmpeg image or a pinned image you build. Choose one with the codecs and protocol support your media and ingest method need.
  2. Mount the media directory at the path FFmpeg expects inside the container. Keep the playlist configuration accessible as well.
  3. Pass the stream key at runtime through the deployment’s environment or secret mechanism, rather than storing it in the image or checked-in configuration.
  4. Set a container restart policy appropriate to how the host is managed. Docker documents restart policies as a way to restart containers automatically when they exit; see Docker’s restart-policy documentation.
  5. Start the container and watch both sides: inspect FFmpeg logs for process exits or network errors, and inspect the stream and broadcast in YouTube Studio.

A restart policy supervises the container’s lifetime. It does not, by itself, make FFmpeg reconnect seamlessly, restore the broadcast, or resume the playlist at its previous position. Those behaviors depend on the process, media inputs, and YouTube state, so test them explicitly.

Verify the stream before leaving it unattended

  1. Start with a private, unlisted, or otherwise suitable test broadcast if your channel allows it.
  2. Check YouTube’s incoming stream status and health information for configuration problems. The API’s health and status fields include issues such as low video bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, or no audio stream. See the LiveStreams API reference.
  3. Watch and listen to the output. Confirm the expected picture, audio, transitions, and playlist order rather than relying only on an FFmpeg process that appears to be running.
  4. Let the playlist complete at least one full cycle. Check whether the end-to-start transition works and whether any item drifts, freezes, or loses audio.
  5. Force a controlled container restart. Note whether playback begins again from the start or resumes as intended, whether FFmpeg reconnects, and whether the YouTube broadcast remains in the correct state.
  6. Only after those checks, decide whether the host, network, storage, and monitoring are reliable enough for unattended operation.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube does not receive the feed The endpoint, protocol, stream key, or selected YouTube stream does not match. Copy the current protocol-specific settings from the intended stream in YouTube Studio, verify the key is supplied correctly at runtime, and check FFmpeg’s network and authentication errors.
YouTube reports low bitrate or a frame-rate mismatch The outgoing feed does not meet the selected stream configuration. Inspect YouTube’s stream health details and the actual FFmpeg output settings. Adjust the output configuration to match the stream you selected; do not assume a different ingest endpoint fixes a media-setting mismatch.
The picture works but there is no audio The input has no audio, the playlist transition changes audio layout, or the output mapping is wrong. Check every playlist item and the FFmpeg output mapping. Listen to the test broadcast, including transitions, and verify YouTube reports an audio stream.
Playback breaks at a file boundary The next item has incompatible codecs, dimensions, frame rate, audio layout, or timestamps. Test transitions with the actual files. Use a consistent encoding or normalization path when stream-copying cannot safely handle the differences.
The container restarts but the live feed does not recover as expected Restarting the container does not guarantee that FFmpeg reconnects or that YouTube restores the broadcast state. Review FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s stream status, then test reconnect and broadcast recovery separately. Confirm where the playlist resumes after a controlled restart.
The HLS feed has unexpected delay or setup errors HLS uses segmented delivery and requires specific playlist and segment settings. Check HTTPS, TS segment output, the rolling playlist limit, and the 1–4 second segment duration against YouTube’s HLS requirements.

Docker or a cloud service?

Docker is a good fit if you want to manage the host, FFmpeg configuration, media storage, and monitoring yourself. Your operating cost and reliability depend on the machine, electricity, network, storage, and maintenance you provide; there is no universal cost comparison without those details. If you prefer a managed way to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: it loops uploaded videos on YouTube without requiring your computer to stay on.

Or let it run in the cloud

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos sent to YouTube, not camera streaming. See StreamNeo or its plan details, then start the free day.
