Your phone can record polished YouTube videos and host a mobile live stream. Choose the right framing for where viewers will watch, use soft light, get close to the microphone, and test the setup before you publish or go live.
Set up your phone before you record
Choose the frame for the finished video
For high-definition footage intended for a standard YouTube video, YouTube recommends holding the phone horizontally for a 16:9 frame. Decide before recording if the video instead needs portrait or square framing; changing orientation later can mean cropping or unused space.
Choose the camera and prevent interruptions
- Use the rear camera when practical; YouTube recommends it for better resolution.
- Turn off notifications so calls and alerts do not interrupt a take.
- If your camera app offers manual controls, lock focus and exposure after setting them. This helps avoid distracting shifts while you record.
Improve lighting with what you have
Soft, even light helps preserve detail. Indoors, try facing a window; outdoors, move into shade when direct sun creates harsh shadows. A white card or reflector can bounce light back onto a dim side of the subject. Start with these adjustments before buying a light or other equipment.
Make phone audio easier to understand
- Move the speaker closer to the phone’s microphone and keep the mic unobstructed.
- Choose a quieter location and avoid handling or moving the phone noisily while speaking.
- In a loud environment, consider an external microphone, after checking that its connector and setup are compatible with your phone.
- In a room with hard, reflective surfaces, soft materials nearby can help reduce reflections.
Record and upload a video
- Decide on orientation. Use landscape 16:9 for conventional wide video; choose portrait or square when that is the intended format.
- Set the scene. Prefer the rear camera, silence notifications, and lock focus and exposure if your phone supports it.
- Place the subject in soft light. Try a window, shade, or a white card to bounce light.
- Check the sound. Speak close to the mic, keep it clear, and listen for background noise before recording the full take.
- Upload in the YouTube app. On Android, the app’s upload flow can record a new video or select an existing file. YouTube says a square or vertical video of three minutes or less may be uploaded as a Short; confirm the app’s current behavior when publishing.

Check eligibility before planning an event
YouTube’s mobile live-streaming help lists a minimum of 50 subscribers, a verified channel, live streaming enabled, no live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days, and a supported device. First activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance sets a minimum age of 16. Eligibility and app behavior can change, so check your channel’s current status well before a scheduled stream.

Prepare the phone and connection
- Charge the phone and enable Do Not Disturb.
- Choose portrait or landscape before starting, then lock orientation to prevent an accidental rotation.
- Test the internet connection from the place you plan to stream.
- Choose the camera: the front camera lets you see chat, while YouTube describes the rear camera as better for visuals. A second device can show chat while you use the rear camera.
- Start an unlisted test live stream and check both picture and sound before the public event.
YouTube’s mobile filming tips estimate about 1% battery use per minute of streaming. Treat that as an approximate platform tip, not a guarantee for your particular phone; battery use varies. An external battery pack may help for a longer stream.
Choose portrait or landscape for a live stream

Pick the format based on the intended viewing context and frame the subject accordingly. If you are streaming a game or other wide scene, check the crop carefully before relying on a simultaneous vertical version.

Fix common mobile video problems
