The right choice depends first on your Pi model, then on whether a particular bank can maintain the required voltage under your real encoding load. No India-sold bank in the available evidence has verified 24/7 output, pass-through operation, or runtime for this use.
For a Pi-based setup, use the model-specific power figures below as a starting point—not proof that a bank or FFmpeg workload will work. If your goal is simply to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream live without leaving hardware running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: StreamNeo loops uploaded videos on YouTube.
Start with your Raspberry Pi model
Raspberry Pi Ltd’s current official setup guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these supply recommendations. They describe the recommended supply at its plug; they do not establish a power bank’s performance or a Pi’s actual consumption while encoding.
| Raspberry Pi model | Official supply recommendation | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Pi 5 and Pi 500 | 5 V at 5 A | With a 5 V/3 A supply, Pi 5 limits peripheral current to 600 mA. |
| Pi 4 Model B and Pi 400 | 5 V at 3 A | Check that the bank and cable can sustain the required output at the Pi. |
| Pi 3 family | 5 V at 2.5 A | The recommendation is not a measured FFmpeg workload profile. |
For example, a Pi 4 shopper can search for a USB-C power bank specified for 5 V/3 A output. That label alone does not make the bank a verified 24/7 solution, and it is not an adequate substitute for the Pi 5 recommendation.

Why the printed capacity is not enough
A capacity figure in mAh does not tell you whether a bank can deliver the required voltage and current continuously, or for how long under your particular workload. Cable resistance can lower the voltage that reaches the Pi. Raspberry Pi’s official guidance specifically says, “Allow for voltage loss in the cable, especially if your power supply cable is removable.”
Raspberry Pi Ltd’s hardware documentation says low-voltage detection on most models since Pi B+—excluding Zero models—detects supply voltage below 4.63 V (±5%). This warning threshold is not evidence that a setup is stable or suitable for continuous encoding. The same documentation gives total USB peripheral limits of 1,200 mA across Pi 2/3/4 and 600 mA or 1,600 mA for Pi 5, depending on supply capacity; these are peripheral limits, not the board’s FFmpeg power draw.

How to evaluate a power bank for your stream
- Confirm the exact Pi model. Use the recommendation above for that model rather than selecting by connector or capacity alone.
- Check the bank’s output profile. Look for documented voltage and current at the output you will use, including whether it maintains that profile continuously. Do not treat a maximum or short-duration output rating as proof of continuous operation.
- Account for the cable. Use a suitable, short cable and check voltage at the Pi end under load. A USB-C power meter can help observe voltage and current, but the useful result is a measurement during the actual stream, not an idle reading.
- Run the intended workload before relying on it. Test the same FFmpeg command, video, audio, resolution, and peripherals you expect to use. Watch for undervoltage warnings, resets, dropped frames, overheating, and stream interruptions over a meaningful period.
- Measure runtime rather than estimating it from stream bitrate. Record how long the exact bank powers the actual setup. YouTube’s upload bitrate is network traffic, not a measure of the Pi’s electrical draw.
- Check continuous-use and local support details. If the bank will remain plugged in, confirm that its manufacturer documents pass-through operation and continuous charging/discharging for that exact model. Also check India availability and warranty with the seller before purchase.
No particular bank’s pass-through behavior, runtime, thermal performance, or 24/7 suitability in India is established here, so treat any named listing as an untested candidate until those checks are supported by its maker or your own measurements.
Power bank, UPS, or cloud streaming?
| Approach | Useful when | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Power bank | You need portable power and can verify output and runtime for your Pi and workload. | A capacity label does not prove stable output, pass-through support, or all-night runtime. |
| Pi-compatible UPS or mini UPS | You need brief outage bridging or a controlled shutdown. | Using a UPS does not by itself prove a continuous YouTube stream will survive an outage. |
| USB-C power meter and suitable cable | You want to check voltage and current at the device end under load. | A meter is a measurement aid, not a power source or a substitute for a sustained test. |
Set up the YouTube stream separately from the power test
A power solution and a working YouTube ingest are separate requirements. YouTube’s official live encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; constant bitrate (CBR); and a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. Its H.264 recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for 720p30. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not evidence that a particular Raspberry Pi can encode those settings continuously.

- Choose a video quality and bitrate that your internet upload can sustain; YouTube recommends checking upload speed.
- Test before the stream, including similar audio and motion to the intended content. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Monitor YouTube stream health and messages during the broadcast.
- Check that the Pi can sustain your specific FFmpeg encode. The available specifications do not establish performance, hardware-encoder support, temperature behavior, or achievable resolution for any particular Pi and workload.
- Use content you have the rights to stream. Copyright claims or other YouTube policy issues are separate from power stability; review YouTube’s applicable rules before broadcasting.
Can you leave a power bank charging while it powers the Pi?
Do not assume so. Pass-through behavior varies by bank, and no specific India-sold model’s support for continuous simultaneous charging and discharging is established here. Confirm that the manufacturer explicitly supports the behavior for the exact model, then test the Pi, bank, and cable together under the intended load. A bank that charges a device while briefly connected is not automatically suitable for unattended 24/7 use.
Troubleshooting a Pi stream powered by a bank
| Symptom | Possible cause to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Low-voltage warning or unexpected reset | Voltage drop from the bank, cable, or connector under load. | Measure at the Pi end while encoding; verify the output profile and replace an unsuitable cable or bank. |
| The stream stops while the Pi stays on | Network instability, YouTube ingest trouble, or an FFmpeg process failure rather than power alone. | Check FFmpeg logs and YouTube stream health, test the upload connection, and isolate power by monitoring voltage during the failure. |
| Pi runs for less time than expected | Actual workload draw differs from an estimate, or the bank’s usable capacity differs from its headline mAh figure. | Measure runtime with the final workload and peripherals; do not infer it from stream bitrate. |
| Bank or Pi becomes unusually hot | Continuous operation may exceed what the device or its environment handles safely. | Stop the test if temperatures appear unsafe; check manufacturer guidance and improve ventilation before testing again. |
| Bank stops output after an interruption or recharge | Output behavior, protection, or pass-through handling may differ by model. | Test the exact interruption and restart scenario; do not assume automatic recovery without verifying it. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you are streaming uploaded, pre-recorded video rather than broadcasting a live camera, StreamNeo avoids keeping a Pi or home computer running: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encoding or quality tiers; the first day is free with no card.
