How to Fix FFmpeg YouTube Streaming Lag on a Raspberry Pi 4

A practical troubleshooting path for FFmpeg-to-YouTube lag on Raspberry Pi 4: locate the bottleneck, tune workload and ingest settings, and check thermals.

To fix FFmpeg streaming lag on a Raspberry Pi 4, first identify whether FFmpeg is falling behind, the Pi is overloaded or throttling, or the network cannot reliably deliver the stream to YouTube. Then change one variable at a time—starting with input format, resolution, frame rate, and filters—and test again with representative motion and audio. There is no single safe setting that fixes every Pi 4 setup.

Find where the lag starts

“Lag” can describe several different failures: FFmpeg may process fewer frames than real time, frames may be lost during capture or processing, upload may be unstable, or YouTube may report an unhealthy incoming stream. Diagnose the stage before changing settings.

  1. Record FFmpeg’s output. Watch its reported fps and speed while streaming. Compare them with your intended frame rate and real-time playback. If speed stays below real time or FFmpeg reports that it is falling behind, investigate decoding, filters, pixel-format conversion, and encoding.
  2. Check the Pi’s load. Monitor CPU use during the same test. High load can point to expensive source decoding or processing even when output encoding uses hardware.
  3. Check YouTube’s stream health. If FFmpeg keeps pace but YouTube reports a poor connection or unhealthy stream, investigate upload reliability, bitrate, and the network path rather than immediately changing the encoder.
  4. Test upload capacity. YouTube recommends testing the connection and choosing a quality that is reliable for the available upload bitrate. Compare the test result with your stream’s configured bitrate.
  5. Change one setting at a time. Repeat tests using movement and audio similar to the real stream; a static or silent test may miss the load that causes trouble.

Keep the FFmpeg command and version/build, input format, resolution, frame rate, CPU use, temperature, upload test result, and YouTube stream-health messages with your notes. Those details make it possible to distinguish a processing bottleneck from an ingestion problem.

Check decoding and the encoder actually in use

Hardware-accelerated output encoding does not mean the whole pipeline is hardware accelerated. Input decoding, scaling, filters, pixel-format conversion, audio processing, and muxing can still use CPU. Confirm what the installed FFmpeg build supports and what the running command actually selects. FFmpeg’s documentation notes that hardware-acceleration support depends on the build and suitable drivers; some paths also require copies between GPU and system memory.

Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation describes an FFmpeg/libav route that uses hardware H.264 encoding when available. Its camera-streaming examples distinguish Pi 4’s v4l2h264enc path from the Pi 5 example using x264enc. These are platform-specific examples, not proof that a particular FFmpeg command has selected an encoder successfully. Verify the encoder exists in your build and is selected in the live command; do not assume a generic hardware-acceleration switch or a legacy encoder name works on every installation.

Do not overlook input decoding

A camera’s output format can make a substantial difference. In an August 2019 Raspberry Pi forum post, a user running FFmpeg 4.1.3 reported that a 720p MJPEG USB webcam input used 100% of one CPU while encoding H.264 to YouTube, while an H.264 file as input used less CPU. That is one dated user observation, not a benchmark for current Pi 4 systems. Use it as a reason to check the camera’s negotiated output format and measure your own CPU load, not as a universal rule about MJPEG.

Reduce processing load methodically

  1. Lower resolution. Try a smaller capture or output resolution and measure whether FFmpeg returns to real-time speed.
  2. Lower frame rate. If reducing resolution is not enough, lower the capture or output frame rate and test again.
  3. Remove nonessential filters. Temporarily disable scaling, overlays, denoising, and other filters. Add them back individually to find any costly stage.
  4. Compare input formats. If the source can provide H.264 directly, test it against a format that requires more expensive decoding. Compare CPU use and output cadence under the same conditions.
  5. Retest with realistic content. Use representative movement and audio and let the stream run long enough to reveal sustained slowdowns.

Raspberry Pi’s camera guidance recommends adjusting ISP output resolution to meet a frame-rate target. Do not treat a specific resolution and frame rate—such as 1080p30—as a guaranteed Pi 4 ceiling or capability: the outcome depends on the input, FFmpeg build, filters, encoder path, cooling, and other parts of the pipeline.

Match YouTube’s ingest settings to your connection

YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Match the protocol, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval in your FFmpeg setup to YouTube’s requirements for your chosen stream.

For H.264, YouTube currently lists 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for 720p30 as both recommended bitrates and minimums on its guidance page. These are YouTube’s published ingest targets, accessed in 2026; they do not show that a Pi 4 can encode the stream or that your connection can sustain it. If upload tests or stream health show instability, lower resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to a combination that performs reliably instead of raising bitrate blindly.

YouTube Help says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Monitor stream health during the event and review YouTube’s messages; a stream that FFmpeg can send is not necessarily a stream YouTube is receiving cleanly.

Check temperature and throttling

Thermal limits are one possible cause of a slowdown during a sustained stream. Monitor the Pi’s temperature and throttling while the problem occurs. Raspberry Pi’s configuration documentation says thermal control defaults to 85°C; it also notes that overclocking and overvoltage are disabled when that situation occurs. The page does not establish that heat is the cause of your lag, so consider improved airflow, a heatsink, or a fan case only if your measurements support this branch.

Do not use aggressive overclocking as a routine fix. Raspberry Pi warns that unsupported overclocking settings can set a permanent bit in the SoC. First reduce workload and address any observed thermal issue safely.

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you observe Likely area to investigate What to try
FFmpeg’s speed stays below real time or it falls behind Capture, source decoding, filters, conversion, or encoder performance Check CPU use and input format; remove filters; reduce resolution or frame rate; verify the selected encoder.
CPU is heavily loaded despite hardware encoding Work outside the output encoder, especially source decoding or filters Measure the source-decode path, test a lighter input format, and disable processing stages one by one.
FFmpeg keeps pace, but YouTube reports poor stream health Upload capacity, bitrate, or network path Run an upload test, choose a lower bitrate or quality that tests reliably, and monitor YouTube’s messages.
The stream degrades after running for a while and temperature is high or throttling is observed Sustained thermal load Reduce processing load and improve airflow; retest while monitoring temperature and throttling.
Lower settings help, but the stream still falters during complex scenes Insufficient headroom under representative load Retest with real movement and audio, then reduce another workload factor or simplify the filter chain.

These are diagnostic branches rather than confirmed causes. Without your FFmpeg command and build, Pi OS/kernel, input codec, resolution and frame rate, FFmpeg speed, CPU and temperature readings, upload test, and YouTube health messages, the exact fix cannot be established.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream, rather than to stream a live camera feed from the Pi, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The stream runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
