To run prerecorded videos continuously on YouTube Live, send a looping playlist through a live encoder—local software, a hosted service, or dedicated hardware—and decide whether subtitles should be permanently visible in the picture or selectable as live captions. The simplest caption path is to burn subtitles into each video before streaming. Selectable captions need a compatible caption feed and separate setup.
Choose how the stream will run
YouTube Live receives an encoded live feed. The encoder needs your stream URL and stream key; YouTube supports both software and standalone hardware encoders. Choose the operating model around what can stay on and what you need to monitor.

Burn subtitles into the video
Burned-in, or open, subtitles are pixels in the video image. Prepare each source file with its timed text already composited, then play it through your encoder or playlist. This is the simplest route because it does not depend on live caption delivery, but viewers cannot turn the text off or choose another language.

Send selectable live captions
If viewers need to toggle captions separately from the picture, the encoder or caption workflow must send captions in a format YouTube accepts. YouTube documents embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions, configured in the stream settings and encoder, and currently documents one caption track for that embedded workflow. It also describes software caption delivery to a signed ingestion URL; products it lists include CaptionMaker and StreamText.Net. Check YouTube’s current setup page and the vendor’s documentation before choosing this route.
Uploading an .srt subtitle file to a regular YouTube video is a separate workflow; it does not by itself provide captions to a live stream. YouTube’s automatic live-caption availability is limited and rollout-dependent. Its help page describes English-only availability subject to latency and professional-caption conditions, and says those captions do not remain on the archive. Check eligibility in YouTube Studio rather than treating automatic captions as a dependable 24/7 caption source.

Set up the stream
- Enable YouTube Live early. Verify that the channel can go live. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until launch day. In YouTube Studio, create the live stream and copy its stream URL and key into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password; reset it if it is exposed.
- Prepare the videos and playlist. For open subtitles, render and check the text in each file before adding it. For selectable captions, configure the supported caption feed as well as the video encoder. Arrange the playlist to loop, and check that transitions do not create blank or silent gaps.
- Configure a sustainable encoder output. YouTube recommends RTMPS, H.264, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your upload connection can sustain. YouTube transcodes live streams for different viewer formats, but that does not compensate for an unstable source connection.
- Run a representative test. Test with the same sort of movement and audio as the real stream. Check subtitle timing and readability in the opening, middle, and ending portions of each source. For selectable captions, view the live player on a separate device and confirm the captions can be enabled. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages.
- Start the encoder and monitor the feed. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and that picture, sound, and subtitles are working. For local software, plan who will notice a crash, lost connection, or power interruption and restart the stream.
Plan for archives, rights, and interruptions
Decide how to preserve the stream
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. If an archive matters, keep a local recording as a backup and plan how a continuous broadcast will be split or restarted for replay. A 24/7 stream should not rely on YouTube to preserve one uninterrupted archive.
Clear every video and audio element
Confirm that you have rights to use every video and audio component, including background music, for the intended live broadcast. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can replace the live image, interrupt the feed, or terminate the stream; even licensed content can be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel. YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service also apply.

Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube receives no signal: Check that live streaming is enabled, activation is complete, and the encoder has the correct stream URL and key. Verify the network connection and encoder output status.
- The stream is unstable or unhealthy: Reduce output demands to fit the available upload connection, use the recommended RTMPS and constant-bitrate setup, and confirm the keyframe interval is two seconds or no more than four. Test again with representative motion and audio.
- Subtitles are missing: If they should be burned in, check that the correct prepared file is in the playlist. If they should be selectable, confirm the caption feed is configured and compatible; an .srt upload for a regular video is not live caption ingestion.
- Subtitles drift or disappear at a loop point: Check timing in the source files and inspect the end-to-start transition. Correct the prepared video or playlist timing, then test the full transition in the live player.
- The stream is interrupted despite having a license: Review YouTube’s copyright notice and contact the rights owner about allowlisting the channel where appropriate. A license alone does not guarantee that automated live checks will not interrupt the feed.
- No archive appears: Check stream duration. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured; use a local recording when preserving the broadcast is important.
