You can use a Hetzner Cloud virtual machine as the always-on host for a YouTube encoder: create the server, configure an encoder to send a live feed to your channel, then monitor both the encoder and the YouTube event. The important limitation is that YouTube’s general encoder guidance does not specify how to loop a playlist of prerecorded videos. Choose a playlist-capable encoder and verify its official setup and restart instructions before relying on it for continuous streaming.
Before you start: confirm YouTube Live is available
Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s age and policy requirements also apply. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming help before scheduling the stream.
Use only video and audio you have the rights to stream. A playlist being available to watch does not establish permission to rebroadcast it. Live content must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
What you need to configure
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and a live event or stream configured in YouTube Studio.
- A Hetzner Cloud server with an operating-system image and internet connectivity suitable for your encoder.
- Encoder software that supports the specific prerecorded-playlist workflow you intend to use, including looping and recovery behavior.
- Enough sustained network capacity for the stream, plus room for bitrate variation and other server traffic.
YouTube supports encoder-based streaming, but its general instructions do not prescribe a playlist-loop command or a specific program for continuously playing prerecorded videos. Hetzner’s server documentation likewise explains how to provision a virtual machine, not how to operate a playlist encoder. Do not assume that a command written for another encoder will work; follow the chosen encoder’s current documentation and test its behavior before leaving it unattended.

Create and budget for the Hetzner Cloud server
Choose a server configuration
In the Hetzner Cloud console, create a server and select a plan, location, operating-system image, and public networking if the encoder needs direct internet access. Configure a firewall or additional volume only if your setup needs them. Hetzner describes Cloud servers as virtual machines and says servers can be resized; see its server overview for the available choices and behavior.
Limit network access to what you need. The encoder must be able to reach YouTube’s ingest service; do not expose administrative access such as SSH to the whole internet without a reason and appropriate safeguards. Hetzner documents how Cloud Firewalls control server traffic.

Check recurring charges and outgoing traffic
Estimate the cost using the current plan price, location, included outgoing traffic, and any additional storage or networking charges that apply to your server. Hetzner’s traffic details vary by Cloud product family and location. Its pricing documentation records a cloud price adjustment effective June 15, 2026, so confirm current figures on the Hetzner Cloud pricing page and in the relevant traffic documentation rather than relying on an older estimate. Hetzner says billing continues until a server is deleted, even if it is powered off.
Configure the YouTube event and encoder
- Set up the event in YouTube Studio. Create or select the live stream and use YouTube’s current encoder instructions to obtain the ingest settings and stream key. Treat the stream key like a password: keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, and logs, and regenerate it if exposed.
- Select the encoder and playlist workflow. Confirm in that encoder’s own documentation how to add videos, repeat the playlist, handle end-of-file transitions, and restart after an interruption. YouTube’s encoder help covers sending an encoder feed, but it does not verify a particular playlist-loop implementation.
- Choose the ingest protocol supported by your setup. YouTube documents encoder streaming options. If you use HLS ingestion, apply the HLS-specific guidance: HTTPS, transport-stream segments of 1–4 seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. HLS generally has higher latency than RTMP. These constraints are for HLS; they are not universal encoder settings. See YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance.
- Protect the stream key and start the event. Enter the key only in the encoder’s intended configuration field, start the encoder, and check YouTube Studio’s preview and event status before treating the stream as live.
Test bandwidth and monitor the stream
YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. The relevant connection is the server’s sustained upload capacity to the ingest service, not your home internet connection. If the stream includes multiple audio or video tracks or other simultaneous traffic, account for the total outbound bitrate. YouTube’s streaming tips also recommend checking the preview, confirming the event’s accessibility, and continuously monitoring audio and video quality.

- Run a test event and inspect picture, audio, and stream health in YouTube Studio.
- Confirm the playlist advances and loops as intended, including after a video ends.
- Observe the encoder process and server resources during playback; use the encoder’s documented logging and restart mechanisms.
- Verify what happens if the network connection or YouTube ingest drops. Do not assume automatic recovery unless the chosen encoder documents and has been tested for it.
Continuous-stream edge cases
Streams longer than 12 hours
YouTube notes that DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. This is a viewer playback limitation, not evidence that the encoder must stop after 12 hours. See YouTube’s DVR help.
Server power and deletion
Powering off a Hetzner server does not, according to Hetzner, end its billing. Delete the server when you no longer need it, while preserving any data you still require.

Playlist rights and reused material
Check the rights for every item in the playlist and the rules that apply to your channel. Technical ability to loop a video is not permission to broadcast it, and this setup does not guarantee that YouTube will accept or recommend the content.

DIY Hetzner VM or a hosted playlist service?
A self-managed VM gives you control over the operating system and encoder, but you are responsible for setup, administration, monitoring, and verifying recovery behavior. YouTube’s encoder list also includes hosted services; it describes Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming and Upstream.so as a 24/7 cloud studio. Check each provider’s current product details to confirm its workflow and terms. The available information does not establish a like-for-like cost comparison between these options and a Hetzner server.
