Shuffling determines the order; looping repeats that order. The concat demuxer expects compatible streams, so check your clips before relying on a long-running broadcast.
What you need before you start
- FFmpeg installed on a computer that can stay on and connected to the internet for the duration of the stream.
- A folder of video files you have the rights to livestream. YouTube’s copyright rules apply to prerecorded broadcasts, and changing the playback order does not grant permission to use music, gameplay, or other material.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming, plus the ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Enough sustained upload bandwidth for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
Keep a local copy of your media library; an external SSD is one optional way to store video files if the computer needs more capacity. It is not required by FFmpeg.
Prepare and shuffle the file list
Randomize the order before writing the playlist
First enumerate only the videos you intend to include, then shuffle that list and save the resulting order. Shell utilities and quoting rules differ across Windows, macOS, and Linux, so there is no single shuffle command that is safe to paste into every terminal. Use a shuffle utility or a small script appropriate to your operating system, and verify the output list before streaming.
Pay particular attention to filenames containing spaces, apostrophes, quotes, or line breaks. The concat script has its own quoting rules; escape paths according to FFmpeg’s concat syntax rather than assuming that shell quoting will work inside the file.

Write an FFmpeg concat script
The concat demuxer reads a text script of file entries and presents them as one virtual input. A basic script has this form, with paths replaced by your actual files:
ffconcat version 1.0
file '/absolute/path/video-1.mp4'
file '/absolute/path/video-2.mp4'
file '/absolute/path/video-3.mp4'Put the entries in the randomized order you want played. The concat demuxer’s directives, path handling, and quoting are documented by FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation. That is rolling documentation for FFmpeg’s current development version; check it against the FFmpeg release installed on your machine.
Check that the clips are compatible
FFmpeg’s documentation says, “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” In practice, compare the streams in every file, including video and audio presence, codecs, and time bases. If the clips differ, normalize or re-encode them to compatible properties before concatenation. Stream copy does not repair incompatibilities, and incorrect duration information can cause artifacts at transitions.

Loop the shuffled playlist
Shuffling and looping are separate operations: the list establishes one randomized sequence, and FFmpeg’s input-loop behavior repeats that sequence. FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output, so placement matters. The concat demuxer is the input in this workflow; put the applicable input-loop option before the concat input, not after it. Consult FFmpeg’s command-line documentation for option scope and confirm the exact loop option supported by your installed release.
A schematic command is below. Replace the loop option syntax with the form supported by your FFmpeg version, and replace the placeholder output settings with the choices described in the next section. This outline is not a tested, cross-platform command:
ffmpeg [input-loop option] -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"Some environments or file locations may not require -safe 0; use it only when needed for your paths and understand that it relaxes FFmpeg’s safe-path checks. Test the loop with a short local run before starting a public broadcast. Decide whether a restart should replay the same saved shuffled order or create a new one; FFmpeg does not prescribe that editorial choice.

Set the YouTube output
Choose the encoder and bitrate
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS delivery, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant-bitrate encoding. Select settings that match your source, FFmpeg build, and sustained upload capacity; YouTube transcodes live streams into different viewer formats.
Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. As examples from YouTube’s H.264 guidance accessed in 2026, the recommended bitrate is 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p30. These are not universal targets: use the row matching your actual output in YouTube’s live encoder settings, and recheck the table because platform guidance can change.
Set keyframes and audio
YouTube Help states: “Keyframe frequency: Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds.” Set a two-second keyframe interval when possible and do not exceed four seconds, following the encoder table for your selected output. Configure audio to a supported codec and ensure it is present consistently across the concat inputs.

Use the current ingest URL and protect the key
In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the current ingest URL and stream key into the output destination. YouTube supports reusable custom stream keys; consult YouTube’s stream key guidance for creating or managing one. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public script repository, or share screenshots that expose it. RTMPS is YouTube’s encrypted variant and is preferable to unencrypted RTMP when using this workflow. The placeholder URL above must be replaced with the actual URL and key supplied by YouTube.
Start the broadcast and verify it
- Generate the shuffled list and inspect it to confirm every intended file appears once and in the desired randomized order.
- Run FFmpeg with the concat input, a compatible loop setting, and the output encoder configuration. Watch the terminal for missing-file, stream-mismatch, or connection errors.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and wait for the incoming signal. Confirm the preview has both picture and sound before starting the public stream.
- Check the broadcast after transitions and through at least one repeat of the playlist. Look for freezes, black frames, missing audio, and whether the sequence restarts as intended.
- Keep the streaming computer awake, FFmpeg running, and network connection stable. This local method stops if the process or machine stops.
Troubleshoot common failures
The concat script will not open a file
Check that each path is correct from the computer running FFmpeg, that paths follow concat-script quoting rules, and that the process can read the files. Spaces and quote characters often expose quoting mistakes.
Playback breaks or artifacts appear at transitions
Compare the streams and duration information of adjacent files. The concat demuxer expects matching streams and time bases; normalize or re-encode mismatched clips rather than expecting stream copy to reconcile them.

The playlist plays once and stops
Check that the loop option is an input option and appears before the concat input. Option placement changes what FFmpeg applies it to. Verify the supported syntax for your installed release and test again locally.
YouTube does not show an incoming signal
Check that you copied the current ingest URL and key from Live Control Room, that the key was not truncated or exposed incorrectly, and that the output uses a supported protocol and encoding configuration. Confirm that the network can sustain the selected bitrate.
The stream disconnects or FFmpeg exits
A playlist command alone does not provide a complete process-supervision or reconnection strategy. If FFmpeg exits, the local stream ends unless you restart it; if the network drops, inspect FFmpeg and Live Control Room before relaunching. Any automatic restart setup depends on the operating system and process manager, so test it separately rather than assuming the playlist command will recover on its own.
