To stream clips alphabetically, create a playlist whose file lines are already sorted the way you want, check that the videos are compatible for stream copying, then send the output to the YouTube Live stream URL and key for your broadcast.
Build a playlist in the order you want
The concat demuxer reads a text file and processes its listed media files one after another. It does not sort a directory by filename. For alphabetic playback, arrange the playlist entries in that order and inspect them before starting FFmpeg.
Use zero-padded names for numeric sequences
Ordinary alphabetical sorting can put clip-10.mp4 before clip-2.mp4. If you control the filenames, use zero padding, such as clip-001.mp4, clip-002.mp4, and clip-010.mp4. This makes lexical sorting match the intended numeric sequence. Explicitly construct and check the playlist rather than relying on how a particular shell or file manager enumerates a folder.
Write the concat playlist
Save a plain-text file named playlist.txt alongside the videos, with one file directive per video:

file 'clip-010.mp4'The ffconcat version 1.0 header is optional. If included for automatic format recognition, it must be exactly as shown on the first line, with no leading spaces or byte-order mark. Paths with spaces or special characters need correct quoting or escaping; use paths that resolve from FFmpeg’s working directory, or use explicit paths in the entries.
Check whether the videos can be joined without re-encoding
The concat demuxer expects the files to have the same streams, including codecs and time bases. The example below uses -c copy, which avoids re-encoding but is appropriate only when the inputs are compatible. Differences in stream layout or timing can cause errors, gaps, or artifacts; a truncated file with incorrect duration information can also disrupt timestamps.

When stream copy is suitable
If the clips match the concat requirements, try stream copy first. FFmpeg adjusts timestamps across the sequence, but differences in clip length or inaccurate duration data can still affect playback. The concat demuxer supports a duration directive to override a file’s stored duration when necessary.
When the clips do not match
Do not expect -c copy to make incompatible files consistent. Choose a common output profile and transcode the clips to compatible video and audio streams instead. The correct codecs, resolution, frame rate, and other options depend on the source files and desired output, so there is no single safe transcoding command for every collection. Send the playlist to YouTube Live with FFmpeg
After creating and checking the playlist, use this representative command shape, replacing the destination with the server URL and stream key shown for your YouTube broadcast:
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c copy -f flv 'YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'This is a pattern, not a universally verified command. The -re option reads file input at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. -safe 0 permits paths that the concat demuxer would otherwise reject as unsafe; use it only with a playlist you trust. The FLV output shown is a common command shape, but confirm the protocol, output format, and encoding settings for your actual setup. Stream-copy mode remains conditional on compatible inputs.

- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or select the intended live stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s setup guide explains where they are used: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Protect the stream key. YouTube describes it as the stream’s password and address. Treat it as a credential; do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not broadcast to your stream.
- Set the FFmpeg destination. Substitute the URL and key supplied for that stream in the command. Keep the playlist path and destination correctly quoted for your shell.
- Start the command and check the broadcast. Confirm that FFmpeg is reading the expected files in playlist order and that Live Control Room receives the feed. If the connection fails, verify the destination values and the stream’s current setup before changing the media settings.
Choose output settings that meet YouTube’s ingest guidance
YouTube’s encoder recommendations include RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate encoding. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the encrypted extension of RTMP. Its current guidance recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed 4 seconds. These are recommendations, not guarantees of stream quality.
Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the applicable row in YouTube’s current guidance rather than relying on a universal bitrate: YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. If transcoding, make the output profile consistent and check that it matches YouTube’s guidance for the chosen codec and resolution. FFmpeg stream mapping determines which input streams are sent, and output ordering follows the map options; do not assume mapping or stream-copy settings are correct when inputs have different layouts.

Troubleshoot ordering and playback problems
- Files play in the wrong order: Reorder the
filelines inplaylist.txt. The playlist, not the folder’s displayed order, controls playback. - Numbers sort unexpectedly: Rename files with zero-padded numbers, then rebuild and inspect the playlist. For example, use
clip-002rather thanclip-2when the sequence includesclip-10. - FFmpeg cannot find a file: Check whether each path is relative to the working directory from which FFmpeg runs. Account for spaces and special characters with valid quoting or escaping.
- Concat reports incompatible streams or playback breaks at a clip boundary: Compare the files’ streams, codecs, and time bases. If they differ, transcode to a consistent profile rather than forcing stream copy.
- There are gaps or timestamp artifacts: Check for differing clip durations and incorrect duration metadata, including truncated files. Where appropriate, use the concat demuxer’s
durationdirective to supply a corrected duration. - YouTube does not receive the feed: Check that the server URL and key belong to the intended stream, that the destination format and protocol match the setup, and that the encoder output follows YouTube’s current ingest recommendations.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply
Using FFmpeg or a cloud service does not change the rights or YouTube rules that apply to what you stream. Use videos you have permission to broadcast, and review YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies before running a repeated or prerecorded stream. A technically valid feed does not by itself establish that the content is eligible for monetization or compliant with platform rules.
