Run FFmpeg in the foreground as a systemd service, then set Restart=on-failure to relaunch it after a failure or Restart=always to relaunch it even after a clean exit. Add a restart delay, enable the service at boot, and verify the feed in YouTube Live Control Room: a running systemd unit alone does not prove the stream is reaching viewers.
Configure the service to supervise FFmpeg
systemd can restart a process that exits, so FFmpeg should remain the service’s main foreground process. Avoid wrapping the encoder in a command that backgrounds it or exits while FFmpeg continues; otherwise systemd may supervise the wrapper rather than the encoder.
The following is an illustrative unit file, not a tested configuration. Replace the user, paths, input, and destination with values for your host. The example uses on-failure; choose always only if a clean FFmpeg exit should also start another encoder process.
# /etc/systemd/system/youtube-stream.service
[Unit]
Description=YouTube live stream encoder
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=streamer
WorkingDirectory=/srv/stream
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/stream/loop.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10s
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
The FFmpeg options and bitrate in this command are an example shape, not a universal YouTube preset. It assumes a local looping file, an installed FFmpeg build with the relevant codecs, and a compatible ingest destination. Get the current stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room, then choose encoding settings for your actual resolution, frame rate, codec, and available upload capacity.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose restart behavior deliberately
Restart=on-failure
Use this when a clean encoder exit should leave the stream stopped. systemd restarts the service after failure, but not after a successful exit.
Restart=always
Use this when FFmpeg should be relaunched after any exit, including a clean one. The systemd service documentation says this policy also covers abnormal signal termination and timeouts. See systemd.service; behavior and available directives can depend on the installed systemd version.

Intentional stops and retry limits
An explicit manager stop, such as systemctl stop youtube-stream.service, is not automatically undone by these restart policies. Repeated rapid failures can also hit systemd’s start-rate limit, preventing further automatic attempts until the limit window allows them or an operator intervenes. The system configuration reference describes manager defaults of a 10-second interval and 5 attempts, but these values are configurable and per-unit settings may differ. Check systemd-system.conf and the manuals installed on your host rather than assuming those defaults apply.
RestartSec=10s in the example is a chosen delay, not a requirement. A longer pause may help if the destination needs time to recover; a short delay can produce a fast retry loop. Confirm applicable options and limits with man systemd.service and man systemd.unit on the target host.

Check YouTube credentials, ingest, and encoder settings
Use the current stream URL and key
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: keep it out of public logs, repositories, and shared unit files. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the service configuration. YouTube’s Manage live stream settings page explains stream settings and keys.
Prefer the RTMPS endpoint when supported
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommends it for encrypted ingest. Use the endpoint shown in Live Control Room, not a generic URL copied from an example. See YouTube’s encoder settings and recommendations.
Match bitrate to the format and connection
YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 4K at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your host’s connection can sustain the stream. YouTube also recommends 20% upload headroom. Account for the stream’s bitrate and any concurrent upload use, then test and monitor stream health. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and Streaming tips.
Troubleshoot restart and stream failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Service fails immediately | Invalid executable or input path, permissions, unsupported FFmpeg option, or malformed command. | Read journalctl -u youtube-stream.service; verify the FFmpeg path, input file, service user’s access, and installed FFmpeg build. |
| FFmpeg exits, but does not restart | The exit was clean while the unit uses Restart=on-failure, or a start-rate limit has been reached. |
Check the exit status and journal, decide whether Restart=always is appropriate, and inspect the host’s systemd rate-limit configuration. |
| Service is active, but YouTube has no healthy preview | Bad or outdated key/endpoint, ingest connectivity issue, or incompatible encoder settings. | Confirm the current URL and key in Live Control Room, check FFmpeg logs, and verify the preview and health indicators in YouTube. |
| Stream repeatedly drops or buffers | Unstable connectivity or insufficient sustained upload capacity can interrupt ingest. | Check host network stability and available upload capacity; leave the headroom YouTube recommends and monitor health during a test stream. |
| Process hangs without exiting | A restart policy reacts to exits and reported failures; it does not inherently detect every hang. | Use encoder/process health signals or configure a separate health check if hang detection is required, then verify recovery end to end. |
Restarting the encoder cannot fix a missing input file, invalid credentials, broken network path, or unsuitable encoding configuration. Diagnose the underlying cause as well as the service state.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube stream of uploaded videos without maintaining an always-on computer and systemd service, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; it loops uploaded videos to YouTube, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
