You can schedule a YouTube live event and have OBS start streaming a looping VLC playlist at a set time—but the playlist, YouTube event, and computer scheduler are three separate pieces. You must leave the computer running and connected, test the scheduled launch, and plan for the fact that a loop or scheduled start alone does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 uptime.

What you need before scheduling

  • A YouTube channel eligible to live stream, with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so confirm access before setting your start time. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
  • OBS Studio and VLC installed. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC or the VLC Video source may not be available. OBS Media Sources
  • Media files you have the rights to use, plus enough local storage and a reliable upload connection for the intended stream quality.
  • A computer that can stay powered on, signed in as needed, connected to the internet, and able to run OBS at the scheduled time.

For a channel built around game footage, music, or other reused material, make sure you have the necessary rights and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies. A technical ability to loop a file does not establish permission to broadcast it.

Build a looping playlist in OBS with VLC

  1. Install matching applications. Install OBS Studio and VLC. If you already use 64-bit OBS, ensure VLC is also 64-bit.
  2. Create a scene. In OBS, create or select a scene for the broadcast. In the Sources panel, click + and add VLC Video Source. The source uses VLC libraries and supports a playlist; it requires VLC to be installed. OBS Media Sources
  3. Add and order files. Open the VLC Video source properties, add the local files to its playlist, and arrange them in the sequence you want. Use files stored on the computer rather than removable or network storage that could disconnect during playback.
  4. Set repeat behavior explicitly. In the source properties, confirm Loop Playlist is on and Shuffle Playlist is off if you want the videos to repeat in the same order. OBS documents loop on and shuffle off as the VLC source defaults, but check the actual settings instead of relying on defaults. OBS Media Sources
  5. Check the scene output. Preview the scene and confirm the video fits the canvas, audio is audible at a sensible level, and the playlist advances and loops as expected. OBS’s sources guide explains how sources are added and arranged in a scene. OBS Sources Guide

OBS’s separate Media Source is intended for an individual media file; use VLC Video Source when you need a multi-file playlist. OBS describes VLC Video as providing extended media support through VLC libraries. Do not assume the format list shown for the standard Media Source applies exactly to every VLC playlist format.

Schedule the live event in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room.
  2. Choose Manage, then Schedule Stream. Create a stream or reuse settings as appropriate. Confirm the current channel eligibility and any restrictions in Studio before choosing a start time. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
  3. Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
  4. In OBS, select the YouTube service if offered and enter the connection details provided by YouTube. Do not publish the key or include it in screenshots, scripts, or shared task configuration.

Scheduling the YouTube event sets up the event page and its planned time. It does not configure the playlist to repeat; that is controlled in the OBS VLC source. Conversely, setting a loop in OBS does not create or schedule a YouTube event.

Set OBS output for YouTube

Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and testing the stream while monitoring health. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video and frame rates up to 60 fps. Codec availability can depend on the encoder and current YouTube support. YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

  • Resolution and frame rate: choose a target your computer can encode and your connection can sustain. Avoid selecting a higher output merely because the source file is high resolution.
  • Bitrate: use the bitrate in YouTube’s current table for your chosen resolution and frame rate. Leave upload headroom for normal connection variation; the published bitrate is not a substitute for testing your actual connection.
  • Rate control: use CBR as YouTube recommends.
  • Keyframes: set the interval to two seconds, and do not exceed four seconds.
  • Connection: select RTMPS when available and follow the server details YouTube provides for the event.

Because YouTube’s bitrate recommendations and interface can change, check the linked settings page when configuring the stream rather than relying on an old saved number.

Make OBS start at the scheduled time

YouTube’s scheduled event and OBS’s launch schedule are separate. You need an operating-system scheduler or equivalent automation to launch OBS at the event time. OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter and says scheduled-task launches should set the working directory (“Start in…”) to the folder containing obs64.exe. Its launch guide does not provide a complete, validated scheduler recipe for every operating system. OBS Launch Parameters

  1. Use your operating system’s scheduler to launch OBS at the desired time, with --startstreaming as the launch argument.
  2. For a Windows scheduled task, set the task’s working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe, as OBS specifies. Confirm the executable path on your own installation rather than copying a path from another computer.
  3. Before relying on the task, run it manually using the same account, launch arguments, and working directory. Check that OBS opens the intended profile and scene and actually begins sending the stream.
  4. Run a test while present. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream health, then verify the public watch page, video, and audio. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder ahead of the event, starting it before the event time, and monitoring quality. YouTube live streaming tips

OBS’s documentation also describes adding launch parameters to a shortcut and gives macOS Automator and Terminal invocation examples, but the precise scheduling steps depend on the operating system and its version. This launch option starts streaming; it does not itself keep the machine powered, restore a failed connection, relaunch OBS after a crash, or guarantee continuous uptime.

What “24/7” means for a scheduled playlist

A VLC loop can keep supplying media while OBS is running, and a scheduler can launch OBS for a planned start. Neither feature alone makes a broadcast continuously available: a computer shutdown, power or network outage, OBS crash, or YouTube disconnection can interrupt it. Plan to monitor the system and test how it behaves in the conditions in which you will run it.

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a single scheduled event will remain live indefinitely; check YouTube’s current event and archiving guidance and plan the broadcast around its documented limits. YouTube’s encoder setup guide

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
VLC Video Source is missing from OBS VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC, then restart OBS and check the Sources add menu. OBS Media Sources
Playlist plays once and stops, or changes order Loop or shuffle is not set as intended. Open the VLC Video source properties and check Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist.
OBS opens at the scheduled time but does not stream The task may lack the --startstreaming argument, the working directory may be wrong, or OBS may not have the expected profile or connection details. Run the exact scheduled launch manually; verify the argument, OBS executable path, working directory, profile, and stream settings. OBS Launch Parameters
YouTube does not show an incoming feed The event may not be ready, or the server URL or stream key may be wrong. Compare OBS connection details with the current event in Live Control Room, keep the key private, and inspect the preview and stream health. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
Stream health reports problems or playback stutters The chosen output may exceed what the encoder or upload connection can sustain, or settings may not match YouTube’s guidance. Check encoder load and connection stability; use YouTube’s current resolution and bitrate table, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval, then test again. YouTube encoder settings
Broadcast stops after a power loss, outage, or OBS failure The local setup depends on the computer, its connection, and OBS staying available; the scheduler is not an automatic recovery system. Restore power or connectivity, check whether OBS and the YouTube event need to be restarted, and monitor the Live Control Room before treating the stream as live again.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than learning to automate a local OBS setup, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or a playlist from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; every quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. The service is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera-based live capture. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
