Use Replay Buffer when you only want to save recent footage on demand. They serve different retention goals; neither is the same as YouTube’s viewer-facing DVR setting.
Replay Buffer vs. recording: which should you use?
| Decision | Replay Buffer | Continuous recording |
|---|---|---|
| Retention goal | Save a recent segment when you request it | Keep a local copy of the ongoing stream |
| Saved output | A buffered segment saved on demand | Ongoing recording file or files |
| What to configure | Enable Replay Buffer, set its limits, and assign a save hotkey | Choose a recording path, format, quality, and output settings |
| Storage and resources | Buffer settings use memory; clips you save use storage | Storage needs depend on settings and how long you retain footage |
| Does it control YouTube viewer seeking? | No | No |
OBS describes Replay Buffer as a separately enabled feature that saves recent footage through a hotkey. It is not a substitute for recording the whole broadcast. For setup details, see the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Set up continuous recording in OBS
- Choose a recording destination. In OBS, open Settings > Output and set the recording path to a drive with enough free space for the footage you intend to keep. A 24/7 recording can grow continuously, so check available space and decide how you will manage or move completed files.
- Choose a recording format. OBS recommends MKV because an ungraceful stop is less likely to corrupt the entire file. If you need another container, OBS can remux after recording stops; test that workflow with a short recording before relying on it. No format prevents every possible failure. See the OBS Standard Recording Output Guide.
- Choose a quality preset for your goal. The OBS Recording Encoder Presets Guide distinguishes Same as stream, High Quality, Indistinguishable, and Lossless. Same as stream reuses the stream settings, but recording cannot be paused with that preset. Higher-quality alternatives can mean larger files, and Indistinguishable may affect performance on weaker or older hardware.
- Start the recording and verify the output. Before treating the setup as an archive, make a short recording, stop it normally, and check that the file plays and contains the expected audio and video. Then confirm that OBS is saving to the intended path.
Plan storage from your actual settings
There is no universal drive-capacity figure for a 24/7 OBS archive: file size depends on the encoder, settings, and retention period. OBS Project reported that its Lossless preset can use around 7 GB per minute in its 2023 preset guide. That figure applies to Lossless, not to every OBS recording. Estimate from a sample made with your chosen settings, then multiply by the hours you expect to retain.
Set up Replay Buffer for clips
- Open OBS output settings. Enable Replay Buffer in the output settings. The exact arrangement of controls can vary with OBS version and output configuration.
- Set the limits. Configure the maximum replay time and maximum memory controls shown in the English OBS interface. These are limits, not a universal memory-to-duration formula; the memory required depends on output settings and encoder behavior. Avoid assuming one RAM allocation will work for every setup.
- Assign a save hotkey. Set a hotkey for saving the buffered segment, then test it during a representative session. OBS notes that saving a replay is unavailable while recording is paused.
- Check saved clips. Confirm that the hotkey creates a playable clip in the expected location and that the clip covers the interval you meant to preserve.
Replay Buffer is useful for capturing recent moments without retaining the entire broadcast locally. If you need an uninterrupted local archive, configure continuous recording instead.

Keep OBS recording separate from YouTube DVR
YouTube DVR controls whether viewers can seek backward during a live broadcast. Turning DVR off prevents that live seek-back experience; it does not turn OBS Replay Buffer on or off, and it does not prevent a recording from being available after the stream. See YouTube’s DVR help.
For the broadcast itself, YouTube recommends choosing encoder settings that provide a reliable stream for your available connection, testing with representative audio and movement, and monitoring stream health. It recommends RTMPS. Its guidance says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance for current bitrate and resolution recommendations rather than applying a universal figure: the appropriate settings depend on your stream and connection.

Test a 24/7 setup before relying on it
- Run a representative test with the motion and audio you expect in the broadcast.
- Check YouTube’s stream health while the test is running.
- For local recording, confirm the output file is playable and that the recording path has room for the planned retention period.
- For Replay Buffer, test the save hotkey and inspect a saved clip.
- Run a sustained test and check storage before depending on the setup for continuous use. This is a prudent step for a long-running stream, not a stated YouTube requirement.
Common problems and fixes
The local file is incomplete or missing
Check the recording path and confirm the drive has free space. If OBS or the computer stops unexpectedly, MKV is the recommended resilience choice; verify the resulting file before moving or remuxing it.
The recording uses more resources than expected
If recording at a quality different from the stream, OBS says the recording uses additional system resources. Try the Same as stream preset if matching the broadcast is acceptable, or reduce the recording quality and test again. The impact depends on your encoder, settings, and hardware.

The Replay Buffer save hotkey does nothing
Confirm Replay Buffer is enabled and a save hotkey is assigned. OBS’s interface warns that replay saving is unavailable while recording is paused; check whether recording is paused before testing the hotkey again.
The saved replay is not a full archive
That is expected: Replay Buffer saves recent footage when requested. Configure continuous recording if you need the full local stream.
