Yes, conditionally. Raspberry Pi lists H.264 encoding up to 1080p30 for the Zero 2 W, and its camera documentation describes a libav route that uses hardware H.264 encoding when available. That makes a YouTube stream technically plausible, but it does not prove that a particular FFmpeg pipeline can stay live around the clock. Treat it as a project to test and equip with a recovery plan—not as a guaranteed unattended streamer.
What the Zero 2 W can—and cannot—establish
Raspberry Pi Ltd’s 2024 product brief lists a 1 GHz quad-core Arm Cortex-A53, 512 MB of memory, 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, and H.264 encoding up to 1080p30. These are published capabilities, not results from a sustained FFmpeg test. The 1080p30 figure is an encoding ceiling, not a promise that every source, filter, audio setup, and network connection will sustain that output.
Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation says rpicam-vid can use the FFmpeg/libav backend to encode and stream audio and video, and that libav uses hardware H.264 encoding when present. That supports a hardware-encoding route for compatible camera workflows. It does not certify every generic FFmpeg command or every camera or capture device. Confirm that your actual build and pipeline select the intended hardware path.
The key distinction is between making FFmpeg produce a stream and proving that the complete setup stays live 24/7. The official hardware and YouTube guidance does not provide a Zero 2 W continuous-uptime result or comparative benchmark for filters, audio mixing, or sustained operation.

Choose a pipeline that fits the board
Before tuning settings, identify what work the Pi must perform. The less unnecessary processing it does, the more useful headroom it may have for streaming.
| Workflow choice | What to check |
|---|---|
| Camera sends H.264 already encoded | Forward the encoded stream where possible rather than decoding and re-encoding it. Confirm that the camera’s output format and FFmpeg input path are compatible. |
| Pi encodes camera output | Prefer a documented hardware H.264 route, such as the Raspberry Pi camera stack’s libav backend where supported. Verify that hardware encoding is actually in use. |
| Software encoding or re-encoding | Expect encoding to compete with other work for the board’s limited resources. The published 1080p30 capability does not establish software-encoding performance. |
| Filters, overlays, recording, or audio processing | Each additional operation changes the workload. Test the complete chain, not just a bare video input, and account for local recording and logs on the microSD card. |
There is no official Zero 2 W benchmark here that identifies a universally safe resolution or filter set. If a stream drops frames or strains the board, simplify the chain or reduce output resolution and frame rate, then test again.

Set YouTube’s H.264 output targets
YouTube Help’s live encoder guidance recommends these H.264 video bitrates. They are platform recommendations, not proof that a Zero 2 W can sustain either setting in a particular build.
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps |
YouTube also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), AAC or MP3 audio, and stereo audio at 44.1 kHz with a recommended audio bitrate of 128 Kbps. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP. Use the protocol and ingest URL shown for your YouTube stream rather than assuming an old saved endpoint is current.

Choose a video bitrate your measured upload can support with headroom for variation. The Zero 2 W has 2.4 GHz single-band Wi-Fi; its specification does not establish the performance of your access point or internet connection. YouTube recommends running a speed test and matching stream quality to available upload capacity.
Prepare the Pi and YouTube Live setup
- Confirm the hardware and power. The Zero 2 W has a microSD slot and 512 MB of memory. Raspberry Pi recommends at least 8 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Lite and lists a 5 V, 2.5 A supply for Zero models. Use appropriate storage and power for your build; recording, logs, or overlays can add storage and resource demands.
- Confirm that your channel can go live. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and retrieve the stream key and ingest details supplied for that stream. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your stream. Follow YouTube’s current channel eligibility, verification, and live-stream rules shown in your account.
- Choose a compatible source and encoder path. For a camera workflow, check Raspberry Pi’s documented camera and libav support and verify that the actual output is H.264 using hardware encoding where intended. Avoid assuming that installing FFmpeg alone enables hardware encoding for every input.
- Set the output to a testable starting point. For H.264, use YouTube’s CBR and keyframe recommendations, then choose 720p30 at 3 Mbps or 1080p30 at 5 Mbps only if the full pipeline and measured connection can handle it. Include the recommended audio format and settings if your stream has audio.
- Test before going public. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with motion and audio similar to the real stream, and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages. Start at a lower resolution or frame rate if the board or connection struggles; increase only after the complete setup behaves well.
- Plan for unattended operation. Decide how you will detect and recover from a stopped FFmpeg process, power interruption, Wi-Fi loss, or YouTube disconnect. Configure and validate any restart or monitoring mechanism yourself. The cited platform and hardware guidance does not establish built-in automatic recovery for this DIY setup.
Test the actual 24/7 workload
A short successful preview confirms only that the setup worked during that test. Before relying on it unattended, run the exact resolution, frame rate, audio, filters, and recording behavior you intend to use for a meaningful period. Monitor:

- FFmpeg errors and dropped or delayed frames;
- CPU use, temperature, and signs of memory pressure;
- Wi-Fi stability and measured upload headroom;
- YouTube stream-health messages and whether the stream remains connected;
- what happens after you deliberately test a process restart or network interruption.
Keep a way to regain access to the Pi and check its logs. A restart mechanism can help after some process failures, but it cannot by itself fix inadequate upload capacity, an unstable power supply, or a stream key or ingest problem. The sources do not establish a universal test duration or a guaranteed uptime threshold; decide what evidence is sufficient for your use case.

| Symptom | Likely area to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot open the camera or input | Input device, camera stack, permissions, or incompatible format | Verify the input works independently, then confirm the FFmpeg build and camera/libav path match the device and format. |
| Encoding is slow or frames drop | Software encoding, re-encoding, filters, overlays, or excessive output settings | Verify whether hardware H.264 encoding is active; remove unnecessary processing or lower resolution and frame rate, then retest the full chain. |
| YouTube reports unstable stream health | Upload variation, Wi-Fi, bitrate, or encoder output | Run a speed test, leave upload headroom, check Wi-Fi stability, and compare the output with YouTube’s CBR, keyframe, and bitrate recommendations. |
| Audio is missing or rejected | Audio input, codec, sample rate, channel layout, or bitrate | Check that audio is actually included and use YouTube’s recommended AAC or MP3 stereo settings where appropriate. |
| The broadcast stops after an interruption | Power, network, FFmpeg process, or YouTube ingest disconnection | Inspect logs to find which layer failed. Configure and test monitoring or restart behavior for failures you can recover from; verify power and network before relying on unattended operation. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream built from uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo avoids leaving the Pi or another computer running at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud loops the uploaded videos. It is YouTube-only and does not stream live camera video.
