Choose localtime for the FFmpeg host’s configured local time or gmtime for UTC, then set the clock’s format, position, and appearance.
Build the clock filter
This example displays the date and time in the FFmpeg host’s local timezone, in white text over a partly transparent black box:
drawtext=fontfile=/path/to/font.ttf:text='%{localtime:%Y-%m-%d %H\:%M\:%S}':x=20:y=20:fontsize=32:fontcolor=white:box=1:[email protected]Replace /path/to/font.ttf with a font file that the FFmpeg process can read. The example is a filter value, not a complete streaming command: put it in the video path of your existing FFmpeg command, using -vf for a straightforward video filter or -filter_complex for a more involved graph. Preserve or explicitly map the audio stream as your command requires. FFmpeg’s filtergraph documentation explains filter usage and overlay composition: FFmpeg filters documentation.
FFmpeg arguments can require several layers of escaping: the shell, filtergraph, and command assembly each affect how punctuation is interpreted. The colons in the clock format are escaped in the example, but the exact quoting can vary by shell and by how you construct the command. Test the precise command in the environment that will run the stream. A text file can avoid some escaping problems.

Choose local time or UTC
localtime: shows the local time configured on the machine running FFmpeg. Use this when the stream should show that host’s local timezone.gmtime: shows UTC. Use this when viewers should share a timezone-independent reference.
For example, replace localtime in the expansion with gmtime to display UTC. Both options use the host’s clock; this filter does not synchronize that clock or verify its timezone. A wall clock reflects the host clock as frames are processed, unlike a timecode or elapsed timestamp derived from media presentation time. FFmpeg documents localtime, gmtime, and separate pts expansions in its drawtext filter reference.
Set the format and make it readable
Choose what viewers see
The example uses %Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S, which displays year-month-day and a 24-hour clock with seconds. For a time-only display, remove the date portion from the format; for example, %H:%M shows hours and minutes. The chosen expansion and punctuation still need correct escaping in your command.

Position and style the text
Adjust x and y to position the clock, fontsize to change its size, and fontcolor to change its text color. The example sets box=1 and [email protected] for a translucent background. FFmpeg also documents controls for borders and shadows. Keep the text within the visible safe area and use enough contrast for the video behind it; a background box or border can help when that background changes.
Check your FFmpeg build and continuous-stream setup
- Confirm filter support:
drawtextuses libfreetype; the current FFmpeg filter reference documents builds configured with--enable-libfreetypeand--enable-libharfbuzz. Supplyingfontfilegives the filter an explicit font path. Font lookup and fallback throughfontdepend on additional fontconfig support, whiletext_shapingdepends on fribidi. - Check the executable that will run the stream: documentation generated for current FFmpeg may not match an older or specially built executable. Consult that build’s local documentation and verify that it includes the filter and required libraries. See FFmpeg release documentation.
- Keep the font available: for a long-running process, use a stable font path readable by the account running FFmpeg.
- Make the timezone intentional: if the host is moved or reconfigured,
localtimemay show a different timezone. UTC avoids dependence on the configured local timezone, but still relies on the host clock being correct. - Allow for video encoding: the clock is burned into outgoing frames, so FFmpeg must filter and encode the video; it cannot simply stream-copy the already encoded video unchanged. Your input, audio mapping, codec, frame rate, bitrate, and YouTube ingest settings depend on your setup. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the numeric settings appropriate to your stream: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Troubleshoot common clock problems
The command fails while parsing the filter
Check quoting and escaping first, especially around the expansion’s colon and the time-format punctuation. Shells and filtergraph assembly handle these characters differently. Try the exact command in the target shell, or move the text into a file to reduce escaping.

The clock is missing or FFmpeg reports an unavailable filter
Verify that the executable used by the streaming process supports drawtext and has its required libraries. A different FFmpeg binary, including an older or specially built one, may not match the current online reference.
The font cannot be found
Check that the fontfile path exists on the machine running FFmpeg and is readable by the process account. A font installed on your desktop may not be present on a remote host.

The displayed time or timezone is unexpected
Check the host’s clock and configured timezone. Use gmtime if viewers should see UTC rather than the host’s local timezone; neither expansion corrects an inaccurate system clock.
The clock is hard to read
Adjust fontsize, position, and text color, then add or tune the background box or use a border or shadow. Check that the result stays inside the visible area and remains distinct from the changing video underneath.
