How to Check Whether FFmpeg Is Dropping Frames in a YouTube Live Stream

FFmpeg’s status can reveal local frame and rate behavior, but it cannot prove what YouTube received. Here’s how to check counters, rate conversion, timestamps, and receiving-side status.

Check FFmpeg’s live status first, then compare its local output with YouTube’s stream-health information. FFmpeg can show what its process is encoding or sending toward the output; that alone cannot prove YouTube received every frame or that viewers saw a flawless stream.

Read FFmpeg’s live status

FFmpeg’s -stats status is enabled by default. While a command runs interactively, inspect its progress for the frame count, encoding rate, output time, speed, and any dup or drop counters shown by your installed version. These are clues about FFmpeg’s local processing and output, not end-to-end delivery measurements.

The documented default status update interval is 0.5 seconds. Fields can vary with FFmpeg version and command, so check your installed build with ffmpeg -version and consult documentation corresponding to that version if the output differs.

Capture progress in a script

For machine-readable updates, add the global option -progress pipe:1. FFmpeg writes periodic key=value records to standard output; each update ends with progress=continue, and the final update ends with progress=end. Set the interval with -stats_period.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -stats_period 1 -progress pipe:1 -i INPUT [existing options] OUTPUT

This is an illustration, not a complete streaming command: preserve your existing input, encoding, and output options. If a script parses standard output, keep other output from contaminating it and capture standard error separately for human-readable warnings.

Determine whether FFmpeg is converting the frame rate

Before treating a reported drop as a fault, inspect where -r appears and whether the video is being encoded or stream-copied. FFmpeg’s rate options do different jobs depending on placement and processing mode.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Output -r while encoding: FFmpeg duplicates or drops frames before encoding to reach the requested constant output rate. A drop count may therefore reflect the conversion you requested, rather than an unexpected delivery failure.
  • Input -r: FFmpeg ignores stored timestamps and assumes a constant input rate. It is not interchangeable with -framerate, which is used with formats such as image sequences and video capture devices.
  • Output -r with stream copy: FFmpeg changes the rate declared to the muxer; it does not drop or duplicate the stream’s data.

Compare the intended output rate with the command’s actual options and the observed progress. Do not assume every -r has the same effect.

Investigate timestamps when counters do not explain playback

If the status counters look unexpected, or playback seems inconsistent with them, inspect timing as a separate line of evidence. FFmpeg’s -debug_ts option provides timestamp and latency debugging output. The project warns that this output may change, so it is unsuitable as a stable interface for portable scripts.

The showinfo filter logs basic packet information for debugging and development. These tools can help you investigate timestamp irregularities, but they do not automatically identify the cause or prove what reached YouTube.

Check YouTube’s receiving-side status separately

Use YouTube’s live-stream status as a second diagnostic layer, distinct from FFmpeg’s local output. A clean FFmpeg counter does not guarantee that YouTube received every frame, and a local warning does not by itself establish what viewers saw. Compare the timing of any FFmpeg anomalies with the YouTube-side status and the stream’s playback; treat them as separate observations rather than interchangeable counters.

Check the status shown for your active stream in YouTube Studio rather than relying on a remembered menu path or assuming a particular warning label. Use the evidence to narrow down the cause

  • FFmpeg reports drops and output -r is set during encoding: first determine whether the count is consistent with the requested rate conversion.
  • The input rate assumption looks wrong: check whether input -r is overriding timestamp-based timing, and whether the source format calls for -framerate instead.
  • The stream is copied rather than encoded: do not interpret output -r as a command to drop or duplicate frames; it changes the rate declared to the muxer.
  • FFmpeg counters and playback disagree: collect timestamp debugging output and compare it with the receiving-side stream status. Neither observation alone diagnoses every possible cause.
  • YouTube’s status differs from FFmpeg’s local evidence: preserve both observations and their timestamps. FFmpeg reports on its process; YouTube’s status concerns the receiving side.

Record the FFmpeg version, full command (redact stream keys), relevant status output, and when the issue occurred before changing settings. That gives you a basis for comparing the intended rate, local progress, timestamps, and receiving-side status without conflating them.
