To keep FFmpeg from suspending when it runs in the background, add -nostdin to the command. For a stream you need to manage as a persistent service, run FFmpeg under systemd and check its output with journalctl. Use the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room.
Before you start
- A Debian host with FFmpeg installed. Check your Debian release and FFmpeg build first: package versions and supported codecs or protocols vary, so do not assume a particular build or encoder is available.
- A scheduled or active YouTube live event. In YouTube Live Control Room, get the event’s stream URL and stream key. Use the RTMPS URL rather than the ordinary RTMP endpoint.
- An input file or other configured source that FFmpeg can read, plus encoder settings that fit that source and YouTube’s current recommendations.
Keep the stream key private. Restrict access to files and scripts that contain it, and rotate it in YouTube if it is exposed. A key included in a command-line URL may be visible to privileged local users or process-inspection tools.
Build and test the FFmpeg command
Prevent background input checks
FFmpeg may check the console for input and suspend when backgrounded. The FFmpeg FAQ recommends -nostdin to prevent those input checks; it also documents redirecting standard input from /dev/null on Linux and macOS. [FFmpeg FAQ, “How do I run ffmpeg as a background task?”]
Use this command shape as a template, not as a universal tested command. Replace the input path and destination with your actual values; never share the completed command if it exposes your key.

Confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the chosen encoders and that the input has the expected video and audio streams. For a file intended to repeat, configure looping deliberately and check timestamps and audio/video behavior; a single generic command cannot guarantee suitable looping for every file.
Set output quality for the actual stream
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate based on your source, audience, available upload bandwidth, and YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Do not reuse a bitrate from a different resolution or frame rate as though it were universal. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings before setting values. The right FFmpeg options depend on your input and build.

Use YouTube’s RTMPS destination
Copy the stream URL and key from the relevant event in Live Control Room and configure FFmpeg to send to that destination. YouTube describes RTMPS as the secure streaming option, and FFmpeg documents RTMPS as encrypted transport. [YouTube: stream setup and troubleshooting] [FFmpeg protocol documentation]
Choose how to keep FFmpeg running

Run FFmpeg as a systemd service
1. Create a service unit
Create a unit such as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-ffmpeg.service. Run FFmpeg directly, set a suitable working directory, and use a dedicated restricted service account where practical. Keep the stream key out of world-readable files; consider that a key in an ExecStart command may be exposed through local process inspection to privileged users.

WantedBy=multi-user.targetThis is an example unit, not a secure drop-in for every host. Replace the user, paths, codecs, and RTMPS destination. Decide whether Restart=on-failure suits your workflow; omit or change the restart policy if automatic restarts are not wanted. Check the systemd manual installed on your Debian release for supported directives. [systemd journalctl documentation]
2. Reload, start, and inspect the unit
- After saving or changing the unit, reload systemd’s unit definitions:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Start the service:
sudo systemctl start youtube-ffmpeg.service. - Check its state:
sudo systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.service. - Review recent logs:
sudo journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service. - Follow new log entries while diagnosing:
sudo journalctl -f -u youtube-ffmpeg.service.
To enable boot startup, run sudo systemctl enable youtube-ffmpeg.service. Enabling and starting are separate actions: enabling configures startup at boot; starting launches it now.

Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg stops or suspends after being backgrounded: Add
-nostdinto the FFmpeg invocation, or redirect standard input with< /dev/null. A shell background operator by itself does not prevent FFmpeg’s console-input checks. [FFmpeg FAQ] - TLS or SSL error: Verify that the destination is the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, not the ordinary RTMP endpoint. If the correct URL still produces an SSL issue, YouTube suggests trying port 443. [YouTube stream troubleshooting]
- Connection timeout: Recheck the exact server URL and confirm that your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. YouTube identifies URL correctness and RTMPS support in the encoder as checks. [YouTube stream troubleshooting]
- The service has no useful output: Inspect the unit with
journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.serviceand follow live entries withjournalctl -f -u youtube-ffmpeg.service. Confirm that FFmpeg writes diagnostics to its standard error, which systemd collects for the journal. - YouTube rejects the stream or no video appears: Verify the stream key and event selection in Live Control Room, confirm the service account can read the input, and check that the chosen encoders and output settings match the source and YouTube’s guidance. Do not include the key in a bug report.
