Yes. If YouTube terminated your channel because of copyright infringement claims and you believe the takedowns were mistaken, YouTube says you may submit a copyright counter notification—including after termination. “Appeal” can mean different things on YouTube: for a copyright removal request, the relevant route is generally a counter notification, not the separate Community Guidelines termination appeal. This is a legal process, not a routine request to reconsider a decision.
First identify what happened to the livestream
A livestream being interrupted, a copyright strike, a Content ID claim, and termination of the whole channel are not interchangeable. The remedy depends on which event occurred. YouTube’s channel or account termination guidance says a terminated creator who believes copyright claims are incorrect may file a counter notification.

For an active livestream removed for copyright, YouTube says the channel receives a strike and live-streaming access is restricted for seven days. That restriction is different from termination of the channel itself.
How to submit a copyright counter notification after termination
- Review YouTube’s termination notice. YouTube says a terminated creator loses access to the Studio dashboard and other features, but can still sign in to review termination information. Check the notice and any information still accessible in Studio to confirm that the termination relates to copyright claims.
- Use YouTube’s copyright counter-notification instructions. YouTube says terminated creators may submit through Studio or by email, fax, or postal mail. Follow the current instructions for the route you use rather than relying on an old form or assuming that a standard termination appeal covers copyright.
- Explain specifically why the removal was a mistake or misidentification. YouTube asks for a clear explanation. Relevant grounds may include that the content was misidentified or that a copyright exception—such as fair use, fair dealing, or public domain—may apply. Simply disagreeing with a claim or finding it inconvenient is not, by itself, a sound basis to file.
- Provide the required information. YouTube’s instructions request the submitter’s legal name and contact information, a direct link to the removed content, and other required details. Check the current submission requirements carefully before sending anything.
- Keep a copy of what you submit. The process has legal consequences and YouTube shares a counter notification with the claimant. Submit truthful information only; do not invent evidence or make a statement you cannot support.
YouTube permits an authorized representative, such as an attorney, to submit on the uploader’s behalf. If you are unsure whether your use was lawful or what a submission would assert, consider consulting a qualified attorney before filing.

What happens after YouTube forwards a valid counter notification
According to YouTube, once a valid counter notification is forwarded to the claimant, the claimant has 10 US business days to provide evidence of legal action intended to keep the content from being reinstated. If YouTube does not receive that evidence within the period, it says the content will be reinstated unless it has been deleted. YouTube also says the associated copyright strike may be cleared when the counter notification is valid and forwarded.
These are YouTube’s stated process steps, not a guarantee that a submission will be accepted, that the claimant will not take legal action, or that a particular channel or video will be restored. Do not treat the 10-business-day period as a deadline for you to file; it is the claimant’s response period after forwarding.

Do not use the Community Guidelines appeal deadline for a copyright case
YouTube describes a separate Studio appeal for Community Guidelines terminations, with an appeal form as an alternative if Studio submission is unavailable. Its guidance states that creators have up to one year to appeal such a termination and may submit only two appeals within that one-year period, subject to limits for a single termination. That timing applies to the Community Guidelines appeal process; it should not be transferred to a copyright counter notification.
There is also a separate Content ID claim appeal. It challenges a Content ID claim. If an appeal leads to a valid copyright removal request and the video is removed, a creator who believes that removal was mistaken may then consider a counter notification. Do not call every Content ID claim a strike or submit a copyright counter notification as though it were the ordinary first-stage claim appeal.

Other ways YouTube says a strike may be resolved
- Ask the claimant to retract the removal request. A retraction is an alternative to challenging the removal through a counter notification.
- Complete Copyright School and wait. YouTube says a strike may expire after 90 days if Copyright School is completed. Expiration of the strike does not, by itself, reinstate the removed video.
A counter notification is appropriate only when you have a genuine basis to say the removal was mistaken or the content was misidentified, including a potentially applicable copyright exception. YouTube warns that misuse—including false information or fraudulent documentation—can lead to account termination or other legal consequences.
