In OBS Studio, add the prerecorded video and a separate music file as media sources in the same scene, set either source to loop if needed, and balance the music in the Audio Mixer. Test the complete scene before sending it to YouTube Live. Use music licensed for the live stream and its archive: YouTube can interrupt a live stream over a match, even when you have a license, unless the rights holder has allowlisted your channel through Content ID.
What you need before you start
- OBS Studio running on a computer that can stay on and connected for the full stream.
- A prerecorded video file and a separate audio file. OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV as supported audio formats for media sources. OBS Media Sources documentation
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup explains how to create or schedule a stream and connect an encoder. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Music rights that cover the planned live use and any archived copy, and, for third-party music, confirmation that the rights holder has allowlisted your channel through Content ID.
Add and loop the video and music in OBS
- Open OBS and select the scene that will carry the continuous stream.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add a Media Source for the prerecorded video. Select the video file and configure its playback options for your intended behavior. - Select + again and add a second Media Source for the music file. Choose the audio file and enable Loop if it should repeat independently of the video.
- Check the scene preview: confirm the video appears as intended and that both sources are active. If the music is longer or shorter than the video, decide whether the independent loops suit your stream; source looping does not by itself guarantee that different-length files will stay synchronized.
Set the music level and check what viewers will hear
Balance the mixer
Use the OBS Audio Mixer fader for the music source, watching its meter during playback. OBS recommends keeping background music and alert sound effects in the green meter zone. Keep the music low enough that any voice or other important program audio remains clear. OBS Audio Mixer Guide
Monitor and make a test recording
Listen to the music through OBS audio monitoring, then make a short recording of the complete scene and play it back. Check for clipping, unexpectedly loud music, silence, and whether the video and music behave as expected at the beginning and at a loop point. A test should resemble the planned stream rather than just checking a static preview. YouTube advises testing with audio and video movement similar to what you will use live. YouTube encoder settings and testing

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule the live stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key provided for that stream.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select the YouTube service or enter the server details as appropriate, and provide the stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it can send a feed to your stream.
- Start streaming from OBS. For a scheduled-stream workflow, wait for YouTube’s preview in the Live Control Room and confirm the incoming picture and sound before starting the event.
- While live, watch YouTube’s stream health and any copyright notices. YouTube recommends RTMPS; for RTMP/RTMPS stereo audio it lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 44.1 kHz stereo at 128 Kbps. Clear music rights before streaming
Confirm that the license covers continuous YouTube live streaming, the territories where the stream may be viewed, monetization if applicable, and the archived copy. A license does not necessarily prevent YouTube from interrupting a live stream: YouTube says licensed third-party content can still trigger interruption unless the rights holder adds the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Arrange that with the rights holder before going live, and keep the license and allowlisting confirmation. YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may warn, interrupt, or terminate a stream when copyrighted material is detected. Troubleshoot common problems
YouTube preview has no music
- Check that the music Media Source is active and its mixer meter moves during playback.
- Confirm the source is not muted and its fader is not turned down.
- Listen through monitoring and make a test recording to distinguish a source/playback problem from a monitoring configuration issue.
Music stops after one play
Enable Loop on the music Media Source and verify it continues after the file reaches its end. If you expect the music and video to restart together, test their durations and loop points; independent sources with different lengths will not necessarily remain synchronized.
Music is too loud or distorted
Lower the music source fader and check the meter during the loudest part of the track. Make a test recording and listen back; OBS guidance places background music in the green zone. OBS Audio Mixer Guide

YouTube warns about or interrupts the stream
Check the Live Control Room’s notice and the rights status of the matched material. If the track is licensed, contact the rights holder or distributor to arrange Content ID allowlisting for your channel; a license alone may not stop live interruption. OBS is sending a feed but YouTube does not show a healthy preview
Verify the stream key and server details, then review YouTube’s stream health and encoder settings. Test with representative audio and video before the event, and use YouTube’s supported audio settings; YouTube recommends RTMPS. YouTube encoder settings and stream health
