To stream from an FFmpeg process running on an AWS Lightsail VPS in India, create a Linux instance in the Asia Pacific (Mumbai) region, connect over SSH, install an FFmpeg build that supports your intended encoder and RTMPS, then publish to the server URL and stream key in YouTube Live Control Room. Test the stream and monitor YouTube’s stream-health feedback before relying on it. This guide covers the setup and the decisions that affect reliability and cost; the right instance size depends on whether FFmpeg is transcoding and on your source and target settings.
What you need before you start
- An AWS account and a Lightsail instance in Mumbai (Asia Pacific,
ap-south-1), if India hosting is a requirement. AWS lists Mumbai as an available Lightsail region; choosing it does not guarantee the lowest latency for every source or audience. AWS Lightsail regions and Availability Zones. - A Linux image, such as Ubuntu, and SSH access to the instance.
- An FFmpeg build with the protocol and encoder support required by your chosen output. Package availability and build features vary by image and version, so verify the actual installed build.
- A YouTube live stream configured in Live Control Room, including its ingest server URL and stream key.
- A source video or other input you have the right to stream, and a target resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate that the source and server can sustain.
This setup sends an outbound publishing connection from the VPS to YouTube. You do not need to expose a public inbound media port just to publish a stream.
Create and access the Lightsail instance
Choose Mumbai and a Linux image
- In the Lightsail console, choose Create instance.
- Select Asia Pacific (Mumbai) as the region and choose a Linux/Unix platform.
- Choose an operating-system-only image, such as Ubuntu, select a plan, and give the instance a name.
- Create the instance, then connect with Lightsail’s browser-based SSH or a standard SSH client.
AWS recommends choosing a region close to users for latency. Mumbai is appropriate when India hosting is part of your requirement, but the best location depends on where the input originates, where viewers are, and any operational constraints. See Lightsail’s region documentation.
Consider a static IPv4 address
A default public IPv4 address can change after an instance is stopped and started. If you need a stable address for administration or DNS, create a Lightsail static IPv4 address in the same region and attach it to the instance. AWS documents that an attached static IP has no charge while attached; check current pricing for a detached address if you plan to leave one unassociated. AWS instructions for creating and attaching a static IP.

Install FFmpeg and check its capabilities
Install FFmpeg using the package manager and repository appropriate to the Linux image you selected. There is no single install command that is right for every image, repository configuration and version. After installation, inspect the build’s supported protocols and encoders and confirm it supports the codec and secure output protocol you intend to use. In particular, verify RTMPS support before choosing an RTMPS endpoint.
Decide whether you need to transcode or can stream-copy compatible media. Transcoding decodes and re-encodes the video, which can demand considerably more CPU; stream copy avoids that encoding work when the input already meets YouTube’s requirements. Validate the actual source codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio and container before choosing. No general Lightsail bundle size can be declared sufficient without those details and a representative performance test.

Configure YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or open the live stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into your FFmpeg publishing configuration.
- Use the RTMPS endpoint when it is available and supported by the installed FFmpeg build. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. YouTube encoder settings and live-stream guidance.
- Keep the stream key secret. Treat it like a password: do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, article, shared shell transcript or exposed log. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the publisher configuration.
Do not copy a real stream key into a command example or save it somewhere accessible to people who do not administer the stream.
Choose encoder settings for the target
Follow YouTube’s encoder guidance for the precise resolution, frame rate, codec and audio configuration you plan to send. Its recommendations include RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. The values below are examples for H.264, not a substitute for the full table:

These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not a promise that a particular Lightsail plan can encode or deliver the stream. Other resolutions and frame rates have their own recommendations; use YouTube’s current table for your exact target. YouTube’s encoder settings.
- Start with a sustainable target: do not choose the maximum resolution merely because it is available. Test the source and server at the settings you intend to use.
- Match the source when practical: if the input already complies with the target, stream copy may reduce CPU use; if it does not, transcoding may be required.
- Set keyframes and rate control deliberately: use YouTube’s recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds) and constant bitrate guidance for the selected codec.
- Configure audio as well as video: follow the audio codec, sample-rate and bitrate recommendations on YouTube’s encoder-settings page for the intended stream.
Estimate bandwidth and Mumbai data transfer
YouTube recommends that available upload bandwidth be at least 20% above the total stream bitrate. That total includes audio, not just the video bitrate. YouTube also advises testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health and messages while live. YouTube encoder settings.

For a rough traffic estimate, multiply the total outbound bitrate in megabits per second by the number of streaming seconds, then divide by eight to estimate megabytes before converting to the billing unit AWS uses. This is only a planning estimate: include audio and protocol overhead, and check the current terms for the selected plan.
Lightsail instance plans in Mumbai have half the data-transfer allowance of plans in most other regions, and excess outbound transfer may be billed. The exact current allowance and plan pricing are not stated here; check the current Lightsail plan details for Mumbai before selecting a plan, especially for a continuous stream. AWS Lightsail FAQ.

Set the firewall without opening unnecessary ports
The Lightsail instance firewall controls incoming access to the instance’s public IP; its IPv4 and IPv6 rules are separate. Outbound traffic is allowed by those firewalls. For a VPS that only publishes to YouTube, allow SSH only from trusted administrator addresses where practical. Do not add an inbound RTMP rule unless another encoder will send a stream into this server. AWS Lightsail firewall and port-mapping documentation.
Test before relying on the stream
- Start with a short test using the intended source, audio, movement, resolution, frame rate and bitrate.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room for stream health, warnings and messages; do not assume that an FFmpeg process reporting output means YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- Observe CPU and network use on the Lightsail instance, especially if FFmpeg is transcoding.
- Confirm the test remains stable long enough to expose intermittent input, encoding or connectivity problems before scheduling a longer broadcast.
- Review expected monthly outbound transfer against the current Mumbai allowance and any applicable excess-transfer charges.
Common setup problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg rejects the output URL or cannot connect securely | The installed build may lack the needed protocol support, or the endpoint may be wrong. | Check the build’s supported protocols and copy the RTMPS server URL from YouTube Live Control Room. Use RTMPS only when both the endpoint and build support it. |
| YouTube does not show an incoming stream | The server URL or stream key may be incorrect, the key may have been reset, or the publishing process may not be sending data. | Re-copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, check FFmpeg output and verify the key has not been exposed or replaced. |
| Stream health reports bitrate or connection warnings | The outgoing rate may exceed available bandwidth, or the encoder settings may not match YouTube’s recommendations. | Check the target-specific YouTube bitrate guidance, include audio in the total, preserve 20% bandwidth headroom and test again with representative content. |
| Video stutters or the VPS is heavily loaded | Transcoding may exceed the instance’s CPU capacity, or the selected target may be too demanding. | Check CPU use, source compatibility and target settings. Try stream copy if the source already meets the requirements, or test a lower target; no particular plan can be recommended without workload testing. |
| Administration stops working after a stop/start | The default public IPv4 address may have changed. | Use a Lightsail static IPv4 address if a stable administrative endpoint is needed. |
| Unexpected transfer charges or depleted allowance | A long-running stream can produce substantial outbound traffic, and Mumbai has a lower regional transfer allowance than most Lightsail regions. | Estimate traffic from total bitrate and runtime, then check the current Mumbai plan allowance and AWS billing terms. |
| SSH is reachable from places it should not be | The inbound firewall rule may be too broad, or an IPv4/IPv6 rule may have been overlooked. | Review both firewall rule sets and restrict SSH to trusted administrator addresses where practical. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is simply to keep uploaded videos live on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to maintaining an FFmpeg VPS: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. It is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera broadcasting. See StreamNeo or plan details, then start the free day.
Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply
A VPS or cloud loop does not grant rights to the video or music being streamed. Use material you own or are authorized to use, and review YouTube’s policies before broadcasting. A live stream that runs continuously is not by itself proof of eligibility for monetization or compliance with YouTube’s reused-content rules; channel eligibility depends on YouTube’s policies and review. Check the current rules in YouTube Help and in the channel’s YouTube Studio before building a schedule around monetization.
