You can run a continuous YouTube livestream from a DigitalOcean Droplet by hosting an encoder on the Linux virtual machine, supplying it with a video or other feed, and sending its encoded output to YouTube Live. The Droplet provides an always-on host; it does not create video, guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast, or automatically restore every kind of failure. This guide covers the setup decisions, YouTube settings, transfer costs, testing, and limits to plan for.
What a Droplet does—and what it does not
A DigitalOcean Droplet is a cloud-hosted Linux server. An encoder running on it reads or generates a video feed, encodes that feed, and sends it to YouTube Live. YouTube receives the stream; DigitalOcean hosts the process and carries its outbound traffic.
The input matters. A loop of prerecorded clips needs media files and a looping or playlist-capable playback pipeline. A live camera needs a capture and input pipeline; generated graphics or other live programming need their own source as well. A server alone supplies none of that content. The steps below describe the overall workflow, not a verified, universal FFmpeg command or a tested server configuration.
Check YouTube eligibility and create a live destination
YouTube’s current livestream guidance says a channel must be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. - In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and set up the stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into the encoder’s destination settings. The server URL identifies where to send the feed; the key authorizes it.
- Keep the key secret. Do not expose it in public scripts, screenshots, repositories, or logs. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.
YouTube explains stream setup and connection details in its encoder setup guide. The exact interface can change; follow the labels displayed in your Live Control Room.
Choose the input, encoder, and stream settings
Pick the video source first
For a prerecorded loop, decide which files or playlist the encoder will play and confirm that you have the rights needed to stream them. For camera or generated content, arrange the relevant input and make sure the encoder can read it. YouTube connection settings do not supply a playback source.

Match the output to YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s current general encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate encoding, RTMPS for encrypted transport, and a 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. Its recommended H.264 bitrates include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Droplet, input, or network path can sustain a chosen setting. Consult the full YouTube encoder settings for other resolutions and frame rates.
For a modest prerecorded loop, 1080p at 30 fps with H.264 at YouTube’s recommended 10 Mbps is one reasonable starting point if the source quality and available capacity support it. Do not upscale a lower-quality source just to select a higher output resolution. Test the actual file and output before relying on a continuous run.

Size the Droplet by testing the real workload
No minimum Droplet plan is established for this workload. Transcoding media uses more compute than relaying already-encoded media, and the load depends on the input and output settings. Test the exact source and encoder configuration on the Droplet you intend to use; do not treat any particular plan size as guaranteed.
Start carefully, then monitor the stream
- Configure the encoder with the selected input, YouTube server URL, stream key, transport, video and audio formats, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval.
- Run a test using audio and movement similar to the intended program. YouTube advises checking the preview before starting and monitoring stream health and messages.
- Confirm that the preview, audio, and video are correct before treating the stream as ready for viewers.
- Keep monitoring stream health and audio and video quality after going live. A process supervisor or system service can restart a crashed encoder, but someone still needs to respond to failures it cannot repair.
YouTube’s encoder tips cover testing and monitoring. A restarted encoder process does not necessarily fix a revoked stream key, missing media, failed network path, or a YouTube broadcast that has ended. An operator must detect and address those problems. The official guidance does not establish a complete failover design or automatic recovery of the YouTube broadcast.

Estimate outbound transfer and cost
The encoded feed travels out of the Droplet, so continuous operation consumes outbound transfer. A rough estimate is: bitrate in bits per second × streaming seconds ÷ 8 = bytes, before unit conversion and protocol overhead. For example, calculate using the bitrate you actually plan to send and the number of seconds you expect to run; treat the result as an estimate rather than a bill forecast.
DigitalOcean says inbound Droplet transfer is free, while outbound transfer allowances are pooled across a team’s Droplets. Unused transfer does not roll over, and additional outbound transfer is billed at $0.01 per GiB. The included allowance depends on the plan, and other Droplets on the team affect pooled usage, so check the team’s current plan and usage instead of assuming a universal quota. Know the archive limit and continuity caveat
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive condition does not establish that a longer stream is impossible, nor does it guarantee an archive for every stream. It also is not proof that a session can remain live indefinitely without interruption. Plan around the archive guidance and monitor the actual broadcast.
