First find out whether the track is missing from the local FFmpeg playlist or only from YouTube Live. If local playback also skips it, check the concat list, file paths, stream compatibility, and duration metadata. If local playback is correct, investigate FFmpeg’s stream mapping, output log, network connection, and YouTube’s stream preview before changing the playlist.
Find which part of the stream is skipping the track
A missing song can be a playlist-input problem or a live-output problem. Treat those as separate layers: a fix to YouTube ingest settings will not repair a file that FFmpeg never read, and editing a correct playlist will not restore audio lost on the way to YouTube.
- Play the source files in the intended order outside the live output, or run FFmpeg locally with the same playlist and inspect the result. Check the transition before and after the missing track.
- Watch YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages at the same transition. Compare what YouTube receives with the local playback.
- Save the FFmpeg version, exact command with the stream key removed, playlist text with private paths redacted, and log lines around the transition. These details help distinguish an input-open failure, timestamp issue, excluded stream, and output or connection error.
- Missing locally too: start with the playlist script, paths, file readability, durations, timestamps, and compatibility at the affected boundary.
- Local playback is correct, but YouTube skips or goes silent: check the selected output streams, FFmpeg output and network errors, encoder settings, and YouTube’s preview and health indicators.
Check the concat playlist and its paths
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a script of files and directives sequentially as one virtual input. Its script begins with the line ffconcat version 1.0, followed by one file directive for each input, in order. For example:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'track-01.mp4'
file 'track-02.mp4'
file 'track-03.mp4'
Save the text as a playlist file such as playlist.ffconcat. Confirm every intended file appears once, in the intended order, and that spelling, capitalization, quoting, and paths are correct. Relative paths are resolved from the playlist’s location, so check that the files are where the list expects them to be. Also check any script or application that generated the list: a missing entry there can look like FFmpeg skipped a track.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a controlled diagnostic, test only the last known-good file and the first file that appears to be skipped, using the same input and output settings. Keep the log. If the file fails to open or is absent from the input, focus on the path and list before changing encoding options.
FFmpeg may reject some paths under its safe-path rules. The -safe 0 option permits paths that would otherwise be rejected, but use it only for a playlist you control and have checked; do not apply it blindly to an untrusted list.

Check whether files are compatible at the transition
Stream-copy concatenation with -c copy preserves packets; it does not convert different files into a common format. The concat demuxer expects the files to have the same streams, including compatible codecs and time bases. If the song before the gap and the song after it differ in stream layout or media parameters, a copy-based concat may fail or produce boundary problems rather than normalizing the difference. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
- Inspect the input stream listings and media properties for both files around the problem boundary. Compare whether each has the expected audio and video streams, their codecs, and their time bases.
- Check whether either file is truncated, unreadable, or has unusual metadata. A track that cannot be read correctly is not fixed by changing YouTube’s ingest settings.
- If the files are compatible and preserving the original packets matters, test the concat demuxer with stream copy on the short, affected sequence.
- If they are incompatible and need a common output format, use the concat filter and re-encode. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is required; the demuxer is an option when avoiding re-encoding. See the FFmpeg FAQ.
Do not treat a command using stream copy as a universal fix: whether it works depends on the actual inputs. Likewise, a re-encoding command needs deliberate choices for output codec, resolution, frame rate, and audio; those cannot be chosen accurately without knowing the source files and intended stream.

Check durations and timestamps
The concat demuxer uses each file’s duration to set timestamps for the next file. If a stored duration is wrong or was estimated inaccurately—for example, from bitrate—or a file is truncated, the next file’s timestamps can be misplaced and cause artifacts around the boundary. The FFmpeg documentation describes this duration behavior.
- Compare the reported duration with the actual playable length of the affected file, especially if the jump occurs at its end.
- Inspect files with unusual metadata or truncation separately rather than assuming every transition has the same cause.
- The concat script’s
durationdirective can override a stored duration. Use it only when you know the correct duration; a guessed override can move timestamps incorrectly in a different way.
Verify that FFmpeg sends the intended audio stream
FFmpeg normally selects output streams automatically according to output-format eligibility and its selection rules. If a file has multiple audio streams, or the selected stream is not the one you expect, the output may omit the intended audio even though the file is present. The CLI’s -map option gives manual control over which input streams are sent to the output. See the FFmpeg documentation for -map.

- Review FFmpeg’s input stream listing to confirm that the affected file contains the intended audio stream.
- Check the output stream mapping and, when automatic selection is unsuitable, explicitly map the intended audio and video streams.
- Confirm the produced output contains audio before attributing silence or a missing track to YouTube.
Stream indexes and layouts vary between files, so an explicit mapping must match the inputs you actually have. Do not copy an index from an unrelated example and assume it selects the right track.

If the local sequence plays correctly, monitor FFmpeg’s output log and YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages at the time of the problem. Look for output or network errors, and confirm the stream is using settings supported by YouTube. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and video, checking the preview, and monitoring stream health.

YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS as protocols, with RTMPS recommended. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR) mode. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds, with a maximum of four seconds. For stereo audio, its advanced-settings recommendations are 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps; for 5.1 audio, 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. Recommended video bitrates vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult YouTube’s current table for the combination you are sending rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer has network-output recovery controls, including attempt_recovery and recovery_wait_time. These address output continuity, not a bad local playlist or incompatible inputs. The documentation also warns that dropping packets on overflow lets processing continue at the cost of omitting part of the stream. Packet dropping is therefore not a lossless way to fix skipped songs. See the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation.
Common symptoms and the next check
| Symptom | Likely layer to inspect first | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The same track is absent in local playback. | Playlist input | Check list order, missing entries, paths, quoting, and whether the file opens. |
| The jump happens at the boundary between two particular files. | Concat compatibility or timestamps | Compare streams, codecs, time bases, and durations; test that boundary by itself. |
| The file is present locally, but the live output is silent or lacks audio. | Stream selection or live output | Inspect input streams and output mapping, then confirm the output contains audio and review the log. |
| Local playback is clean, but YouTube’s preview or health reports a problem. | Ingest or network output | Check FFmpeg output errors, network continuity, encoder settings, preview, and stream health. |
| The problem appears after enabling recovery or packet dropping. | Output recovery behavior | Check whether packets are being discarded; recovery cannot repair the playlist and packet loss can omit content. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube music stream built from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to keeping a local FFmpeg setup running: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on for the stream to keep running.
- Every quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed as uploaded, at one price per slot without quality tiers or re-encoding.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
