How to Use OBS Scene Collections for Multiple YouTube Loop Channels

Use OBS Scene Collections for channel layouts and Profiles for stream settings. Learn how to loop a file or playlist, verify the right YouTube destination, and understand what the setup does not do.

Use OBS Scene Collections to keep each YouTube channel’s scenes and sources organized, and use Profiles for channel-specific stream, video, and output settings. For a single repeating video, add a Media Source and turn on Loop; for a playlist, use VLC Video. This setup makes switching between channel configurations clearer, but collections and profiles alone do not create simultaneous independent broadcasts.

Scene Collections and Profiles do different jobs

A Scene Collection stores scenes and sources, including global audio sources configured under Settings → Audio. Use separate collections when channels need different layouts, media, overlays, or audio arrangements. OBS explains that collections can be switched for different situations: OBS Scene Collections.

A Profile stores stream settings—including the connected account—along with video and output settings, but not scenes. Use a separate profile when channel destinations or output settings differ. Profiles and Scene Collections can be mixed and matched; selecting one does not automatically select the other. OBS puts it plainly: “Profiles do NOT store your Scenes — use Scene Collections.” See OBS Profiles.

Choose the right source for your loop

One repeating file: Media Source

OBS’s built-in Media Source plays local video and audio files on Windows, macOS, and Linux. OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM among supported video types. Select the file and enable Loop; the documented default is Off. Restart playback when active defaults to On. More details are in OBS Media Sources.

Several files: VLC Video

Use VLC Video when the channel needs a playlist rather than one file. It supports playlist looping and shuffle controls. VLC must be installed, and OBS requires 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. Decide whether playback should follow a set order or shuffle, then configure the playlist and its loop behavior.

Set up a channel configuration in OBS

  1. Create or duplicate a Scene Collection. In OBS, use the Scene Collection controls to create or duplicate a collection for a distinct channel layout. Name it clearly, such as Channel – ambient loop or Channel – study loop, rather than leaving a generic name.
  2. Add the loop scene and source. Create a scene for the channel’s content. For one file, add a Media Source, select the local file, and enable Loop. For multiple files, add VLC Video and configure the playlist, loop, and shuffle options. Check the clip transition at the end of playback before relying on it for a long broadcast.
  3. Select or create the matching Profile if needed. Use a separate Profile when the account, destination, or output settings differ. Give it a name that identifies the channel configuration. Remember that the Profile and Scene Collection are separate selections.
  4. Configure the YouTube destination and credentials. In the channel’s YouTube Studio Live Control Room, create or schedule a broadcast, or select the intended one. Enter that stream’s server URL and stream key in the matching OBS stream configuration. YouTube describes the key as the stream’s password and address; keep it private and reset it if compromised. Follow YouTube encoder setup and YouTube stream settings.
  5. Verify before going live. Confirm the active Scene Collection, Profile, intended channel and broadcast, and stream key. Check the Live Control Room preview and confirm that video and audio are present. YouTube recommends checking the preview before going live and monitoring stream quality: YouTube live-stream tips.

Switching channels versus broadcasting simultaneously

If you only need to switch which channel configuration you use over time, named collections and profiles help keep the right layout, sources, destination, and output settings together. Before each broadcast, confirm both the active collection and profile: selecting a collection does not change the profile automatically.

If you need distinct channels live at the same time, treat that as a separate concurrency design problem. Creating multiple collections and profiles does not itself provide independent simultaneous outputs. YouTube currently lists limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key, with both limits applying; check YouTube live streaming for current platform guidance. The OBS documentation cited above does not establish a supported multi-output architecture or specify the computer and network capacity needed for a particular concurrent setup.

Check YouTube eligibility, rights, and monetization separately

YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days. Its general eligibility guidance also covers age restrictions: users under 16 cannot live stream independently under the general rules, and adult-presence requirements apply. A channel restricted from live streaming cannot use another channel to get around that restriction. Consult YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and guidance on avoiding restrictions for details that may apply to your situation.

A working loop is not proof that a stream is eligible for monetization. YouTube’s policy update dated July 15, 2025 renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced material is ineligible under the existing standard. Its policy says content should offer material variation and creative, educational, or other value, and defines “video” to include live streams. Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions: have the rights needed for the material you stream, and do not assume a technically functioning loop will pass a channel-wide review. See YouTube channel monetization policies.

Troubleshoot the common setup mistakes

  • The wrong layout or video appears. Check the active Scene Collection and the selected scene; collections organize scenes and sources, but selecting a Profile does not select the matching collection.
  • The wrong channel receives the stream. Verify the active Profile and its stream account or destination, then confirm the intended broadcast and stream key in YouTube Studio before starting.
  • The file stops instead of repeating. Open the Media Source properties and turn on Loop; OBS documents that this property defaults to Off.
  • A playlist source is unavailable. Confirm VLC is installed. If OBS is 64-bit, OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  • The preview has no expected video or audio. Confirm the selected scene and source, inspect the YouTube preview, and monitor stream quality before and during the broadcast.
  • The stream key may be exposed. Treat it as a credential. Reset it in YouTube if compromised, then update the corresponding OBS configuration.
  • You expected two independent broadcasts from two collections. Collections and profiles organize configurations; they do not establish simultaneous outputs. Validate the separate output design and capacity before relying on concurrent streams.
