In OBS, open Settings → Video and set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720. Start with 30 FPS, then choose a bitrate your connection can sustain steadily. YouTube’s listed H.264 guidance for 720p is 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended, but a speed-test peak does not prove your connection can hold either rate throughout a stream. Test with your real content before going live.
Set OBS to 720p
- Open Settings → Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720. This is the stream’s output size. Base (Canvas) Resolution is the space OBS uses to arrange sources; it can remain at your monitor or game resolution while OBS scales the output to 720p. Changing only the canvas does not set the stream output to 720p. OBS Video Settings.
- Choose a frame rate. Begin at 30 FPS if internet bandwidth or computer resources are limited. OBS notes that 60-FPS streaming can be substantially more demanding on the system. YouTube lists the same H.264 bitrate range for 720p30 and 720p60, but that does not mean every computer or encoder can handle both equally. OBS Video Settings; YouTube encoder settings.
- Set the output bitrate. Open Settings → Output and configure the video bitrate according to your stable upload capacity and YouTube’s guidance below. Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video as supported encoder formats. For stereo audio, YouTube lists 128 Kbps. YouTube encoder settings.
YouTube’s listed H.264 guidance is the most useful reference for a typical OBS 720p stream:
| Output | YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a guarantee that an Indian ISP connection, mobile hotspot, or route to a YouTube ingest server can sustain them. YouTube’s table also lists 2 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps recommended for 720p30 and 720p60 using AV1 or H.265. Those codec-specific figures should not be mistaken for H.264 settings. YouTube encoder settings.
Choose a bitrate for your actual connection
Run an upload-speed test and judge the stable capacity you can maintain, not a momentary peak. Allow for normal variation and other people or devices using the connection. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic when choosing or lowering video bitrate to address dropped frames; it is not a YouTube rule or a guarantee. | Your situation | Starting decision | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Stable upload appears able to sustain YouTube’s H.264 recommendation | Test 720p30 at a bitrate within YouTube’s 3–8 Mbps range. | Check YouTube stream health and OBS dropped frames during representative movement. |
| Upload is limited or fluctuates | Set the bitrate below the capacity you can sustain; OBS’s 75% heuristic can be a first estimate. | Retest at the time and location you intend to stream. If even the minimum is not sustainable, reduce bitrate and/or resolution, then judge the quality trade-off. |
| Wi-Fi is unstable, but the internet service has enough upload capacity | Try a wired Ethernet connection. | A cable can improve the local network link; it cannot increase your ISP’s upload capacity. |
| Dropped frames persist at a conservative bitrate | Try another ingest server if available, and check VPN, router, or network software issues. | The connection path to the ingest server may be unstable or outside OBS itself; contact your ISP if needed. |
Test before making the stream continuous
- Run a private or otherwise low-risk test with the same resolution, frame rate, bitrate, encoder, audio, and scene setup you plan to use.
- Include movement comparable to the real stream. A static screen test may not reveal the demands of a moving game or busy scene.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s dropped-frame indicators through the test. A short successful launch is not proof the connection will remain stable over a long session.
- If the test is unstable, lower the video bitrate first and repeat the test. Consider 30 FPS if you were trying 60 FPS and the computer is struggling.
YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That gives viewers playback options; it does not repair an incoming stream that your connection cannot sustain. YouTube encoder settings; OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
Troubleshoot dropped frames
- OBS reports dropped frames: The connection may be unstable or unable to keep up with the configured bitrate. Lower the video bitrate and test again. OBS troubleshooting.
- Speed test looks fast, but the stream still drops frames: A speed test does not establish that the route to YouTube’s ingest server is stable. Test at the stream location and time; if available, try another ingest server and check VPN or network software.
- Wi-Fi fluctuates: Test over Ethernet if possible. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable can be a practical option when the local Wi-Fi link is the suspected problem, but it will not raise the ISP’s upstream capacity or fix congestion beyond the local link.
- Dynamic bitrate is enabled: OBS can lower bitrate during network congestion, which may reduce dropped frames but also reduces stream quality. It does not fix the underlying connection problem. OBS troubleshooting.
- Connection remains unstable after lowering bitrate: Check networking software and router conditions, try another ingest server if available, and contact your ISP if the problem persists.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded videos rather than a live camera or game feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
