How Much CPU and RAM Does a VPS Need for a 24/7 YouTube Video Stream?

A modest VPS can start at 1–2 vCPU and 1–2 GB RAM for one already encoded video, but encoding and production require workload-specific testing. YouTube has no universal VPS minimum.

For one prerecorded video that is already encoded and simply looped to YouTube, 1–2 vCPU and 1–2 GB of RAM is a reasonable VPS starting estimate—not an official YouTube requirement or a guaranteed minimum. If the VPS must encode, resize, filter, composite, or produce multiple streams, there is no defensible universal CPU or RAM figure: benchmark the actual workload. YouTube publishes stream settings and bitrate recommendations, but no VPS hardware minimum.

What determines how much CPU and RAM you need?

The key distinction is whether the VPS is forwarding an already encoded video or processing video before it reaches YouTube. Reading a prepared file, looping it, and transmitting it is a lighter task than real-time software encoding or scene production. The stream’s duration alone does not determine its CPU requirement; 24/7 operation makes sustained resource limits, network capacity, and recovery more important.

  • Playback and transmission: FFmpeg or another sender reads a file encoded at the target settings and sends it without re-encoding. A modest starting estimate for one stream is 1–2 vCPU and 1–2 GB RAM.
  • Video processing: Software encoding, resizing, filters, overlays, and scene composition add work. Test the exact resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder preset, and filters; select CPU capacity that sustains real-time output with headroom.
  • Several streams or outputs: Measure them running together. Do not assume the resources scale linearly from a single stream; CPU scheduling, memory use, and outbound bandwidth can all become bottlenecks.

The starting range is an editorial estimate, not a YouTube specification or a tested benchmark. A VPS’s advertised vCPU count also cannot guarantee sustained performance when CPU resources are shared or constrained by the provider.

Choose a starting configuration by workload

Workload Starting guidance What to verify
One prepared, already encoded video, looped and transmitted 1–2 vCPU and 1–2 GB RAM as a starting estimate Confirm no encoding is happening unexpectedly; monitor CPU and memory during a representative run; check network stability and transfer limits.
One stream with software encoding, resizing, filters, overlays, or scene composition No universal CPU or RAM figure is established Benchmark the exact production settings and maintain real-time encoding with headroom; account for production software and buffers in RAM.
Multiple simultaneous streams or outputs Size from measured combined load Test simultaneous operation, including CPU scheduling, memory, and total egress.

Account for YouTube bitrate and VPS transfer limits

CPU and RAM are only part of sizing a 24/7 sender. The VPS needs a stable upstream connection and enough monthly outbound transfer for the stream. The figures below are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates, recorded as current on October 3, 2026; codec options are shown separately. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Output AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate H.264 recommended bitrate
720p at 30 or 60 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
4K at 30 fps 30 Mbps 42 Mbps
4K at 60 fps 35 Mbps 50 Mbps

At a constant bitrate, one Mbps uses roughly 324 GB of outbound data in 30 days, before protocol overhead. That means a 10 Mbps stream is about 3.24 TB per 30 days, and 14 Mbps is about 4.54 TB. These are arithmetic estimates from bitrate multiplied by time, not YouTube-published transfer figures. Check how your VPS provider counts egress, and allow for overhead and reconnects.

YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream. Monitor stream health and messages during the test and while live. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for viewers, so the VPS generally needs to produce the selected input stream rather than a separate encode for every viewer.

Configure the sender and keep it recoverable

  1. Prepare the media. Use a file encoded at the resolution, frame rate, and codec you intend to send. If the VPS is supposed to only play and transmit it, make sure your command or software is not also encoding or filtering it.
  2. Set up YouTube ingest. Create the live stream in YouTube and use its stream key in your sender. Treat the key as a secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
  3. Use a secure ingest connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its RTMPS delivery guide specifies a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint and port 443, with SSL/TLS and hostname requirements.
  4. Test representative output. Run a test with the intended audio and moving video. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages, then monitor VPS CPU, RAM, and network use over a sustained run.
  5. Provide process supervision. Configure your chosen service manager or supervisor to restart the sender if it exits, and check its logs after failures. A restart policy is an operational practice, not a guarantee of uninterrupted uptime; confirm that the stream reconnects and resumes as intended.

Troubleshoot resource and stream problems

  • CPU stays high or output falls behind: Check whether the sender is encoding, resizing, or applying filters when you expected simple file transmission. Reduce processing or benchmark a larger sustained CPU allocation using the actual settings.
  • Memory use climbs or the process is killed: Inspect the sender, buffers, containers, and any production software. Add RAM based on observed use rather than assuming the simple-playback estimate covers a more complex setup.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health: Test upstream speed and stability, compare the actual bitrate with the recommended setting for your resolution, frame rate, and codec, and inspect sender logs and YouTube’s messages.
  • The VPS hits a transfer cap or unexpected overage: Estimate egress from bitrate and run time, then confirm the provider’s allowance and accounting rules. A 24/7 stream can use several terabytes per month even when CPU demand is modest.
  • The stream stops after a sender or network failure: Check logs, verify the stream key and ingest configuration, and confirm the supervisor restarts the sender. Test the recovery path; automatic process restart does not itself prove the YouTube stream is back online.
