To stream a prerecorded video to YouTube from an Indian VPS, run an encoder such as FFmpeg on the server, play the file at real-time speed, and send the feed to YouTube’s live ingest server using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. Before choosing a low-cost plan, check that it can sustain the stream’s bitrate, has enough monthly transfer and storage, and has enough CPU if you need to re-encode. Start early and confirm the feed in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview.
Before you start
You need a YouTube channel eligible to go live, a VPS with the video file on disk, and an encoder configured with the current ingest URL and stream key. YouTube says encoder streaming requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Check available disk space for the video and any other files you plan to keep on the server.
- Check CPU capacity if you will transcode. Sending a compatible file without re-encoding can reduce CPU use, but you still need to test the actual stream on the plan you choose.
- Review the provider’s sustained outbound capacity, transfer quota or fair-use terms, and rules for continuous outbound streaming.
- Use a representative clip to test image, sound, bitrate and stability before scheduling a longer broadcast.
There is no universal VPS size or verified Indian provider recommendation here: requirements depend on the resolution, frame rate, codec, whether the server must transcode, and the number of streaming hours.
Choose the YouTube output settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS; H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for the complete options and the output you intend to use.

| Output | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates, not a promise that a VPS can deliver them. The figures above are from YouTube Help’s encoder-settings table, accessed in 2026; check the live table for minimums and other resolutions. Allow for audio and protocol overhead as well as the video bitrate: YouTube recommends roughly 20% upload headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Set up the YouTube event and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select the event. Confirm the channel meets YouTube’s live-stream eligibility requirements.
- Open the event’s stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key into your encoder configuration. Use the current values shown in Studio rather than a URL or key copied from an old example.
- Treat the key as a password: do not publish it in a tutorial, screenshot, public script, or log. Avoid putting it in shell history; use a protected configuration or another secret-handling method available on your VPS.
- If you reset the stream key, update the encoder with the replacement before reconnecting.
YouTube describes stream keys as the credential and address information an encoder uses to deliver the feed. Its live stream settings guidance explains how to manage them.

Prepare the video and run FFmpeg
Upload the file to the VPS, confirm it contains the audio and video you expect, and make sure the server has enough free disk space. If the file already matches the intended output and can be passed through, avoiding a transcode can conserve CPU. If it needs conversion, test the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate on the actual VPS; a low-cost instance may not encode a demanding stream smoothly.
FFmpeg’s documentation demonstrates real-time input and RTMP output with H.264 video, AAC audio and FLV, along with options for attempting recovery after a temporary network failure. Treat this as a configuration pattern, not a ready-to-run command: substitute the local file path and the current server URL and key from YouTube Studio, and confirm the options against your FFmpeg build and YouTube’s current settings. Keep credentials out of visible commands and logs. See FFmpeg’s formats documentation.

- Install or use an FFmpeg build that supports the input file and codecs you intend to send.
- Configure the input to play in real time, not as fast as the server can read the file. Configure the output for the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR bitrate and two-second keyframe interval.
- Set the output destination to YouTube’s current ingest server URL and stream key. Prefer RTMPS where supported by your encoder configuration.
- Start the encoder early enough for YouTube to receive the feed and for you to inspect it before the planned broadcast.
- Monitor CPU, outbound network use, dropped frames, audio and video while it runs. End the event in YouTube Studio, then stop the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Test the VPS workload before relying on it
Advertised port speed alone does not establish that the VPS will sustain a live stream. Compare a candidate plan against the actual workload and measure performance with a representative test, rather than assuming a plan is suitable from its price or headline speed.
- Outbound capacity: confirm the server can maintain the total stream bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended roughly 20% headroom.
- Transfer allowance: estimate total data for the planned streaming hours and check quota, fair-use limits and any transfer charges.
- CPU: assess sustained encoding needs at the chosen resolution, frame rate and codec; transcoding can be much more demanding than passing through compatible media.
- Storage: include the uploaded video and any local recording or working files.
- Reliability and terms: check network reliability and whether continuous outbound streaming is permitted.
- Total cost: calculate the full cost for the intended duration, including storage and transfer charges where applicable.
For a useful early check, leave time to inspect YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and stream health, and test with representative movement and sound. YouTube’s streaming tips cover testing and network headroom.

Common problems and fixes
YouTube does not receive the feed
Check that the event is ready in Studio and that the encoder is using its current server URL and stream key. Confirm the key was not reset, the VPS has outbound connectivity, and the encoder’s destination and output format are configured correctly.
The stream buffers, drops frames or disconnects
Compare actual outbound use with the configured total bitrate and add headroom. Check whether the VPS is reaching its sustained network or transfer limits, and whether CPU is saturated by transcoding. Reduce the output workload or avoid transcoding if the media is already compatible; test again before depending on the stream. An encoder’s recovery option can help with a temporary network failure, but it does not replace reliable connectivity.

The picture or sound is missing or wrong
Inspect the source file and confirm the expected audio and video streams are present. Verify that the selected codecs, resolution and frame rate are supported by the encoder setup and match the intended YouTube output. Use the Live Control Room preview and a representative test clip to catch problems before the broadcast.
The server cannot sustain the chosen quality
Re-encoding may exceed a small VPS’s CPU capacity. Try a lower resolution or frame rate, choose an output bitrate appropriate to YouTube’s current table, or use compatible media without transcoding. Do not mistake a plan’s advertised port speed for proof of sustained throughput.
Copyright and YouTube monetization considerations
A video being prerecorded does not grant permission to broadcast its contents. Use footage, music and other material you own or have permission to use, and review applicable rights before streaming. YouTube’s live-stream requirements and enforcement can change; check the channel’s current eligibility and event status in Studio before going live. A live broadcast does not by itself establish eligibility for monetization, and compliance with copyright rules does not guarantee monetization approval.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuously looping YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to maintaining an encoder on your VPS. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It does not stream from a camera.
