If you use Studio Mode, check whether the shortcut changes the live Program or only prepares Preview before relying on it.
Set up scene-switching hotkeys in OBS
- Prepare the scenes you need. Create and name the scenes you will use during the broadcast, such as a game, desktop, break, or end scene. OBS scenes are layouts made from sources; see the OBS Sources Guide.
- Open the hotkey settings. In OBS Studio, open Settings → Hotkeys. Find the Switch to scene action listed for each scene. OBS documents hotkeys for switching to a specific scene in its overview guide.
- Assign distinct combinations. Choose a memorable shortcut for each important scene. Avoid combinations already assigned to another OBS action or likely to be used by a game or another application. OBS warns in its interface that shared combinations can act as toggles; review the Hotkeys list and test the shortcuts in the same operating context you will use on stream. The current interface strings are visible in OBS’s English locale file.
- Apply and rehearse. Apply the settings, press each shortcut, and confirm the correct scene appears. Check that the intended sources are visible and the audio is right, then return to your normal scene. Rehearsal catches setup mistakes; hotkeys are not a guarantee of uninterrupted switching.
Using hotkeys with Studio Mode
Studio Mode shows the live scene (Program) on the right and a scene being prepared (Preview) on the left. A transition sends the prepared scene to the live output. That makes the workflow different from simply selecting a scene and assuming it is already on air: test the shortcut and transition sequence, then verify the actual output before relying on it during a broadcast. Scene hotkeys are not scene-collection hotkeys
A scene hotkey selects an individual scene in the active setup. A scene collection is a saved group of scenes and sources; it does not store output settings. Collections can suit different kinds of streams or help organize a large scene list, but changing collections is a production-setup change rather than a normal live scene switch. OBS describes collections in its Scene Collections guide. Elgato’s OBS integration guide recommends selecting a collection before going live or recording to avoid interruptions: Elgato Stream Deck OBS Studio Integration.
Keyboard shortcuts or a Stream Deck?
OBS’s built-in hotkeys handle scene switching without additional hardware. A dedicated controller is optional if you prefer labeled physical buttons or want to trigger other OBS actions from a control surface.

Elgato’s OBS integration supports mapping a specific scene to a Stream Deck key, along with actions such as source visibility, audio, streaming, recording, Studio Mode, and transitions. Its plugin can switch scenes directly or preview them in Studio Mode before sending them live. The plugin is described as free; the Stream Deck hardware is a separate product. Choose based on how many actions you need, whether you can comfortably reach your assigned keys, how important visible labels are, and whether you want a button to put a scene live immediately or prepare it for Preview first. These are workflow considerations, not measured speed or reliability claims.
