To run a dedicated loop-stream PC with portable OBS, use the Windows ZIP build, place an empty portable_mode or portable_mode.txt file in the extracted OBS folder (or launch OBS with --portable), then configure a looping media source and your stream output. Portable mode keeps OBS settings with the application; it does not bundle or move the video files. Keep those files at stable paths, test the stream and startup procedure, and remember that OBS portable mode is not currently supported on macOS or Linux, according to the OBS Project’s portable-mode documentation.
What portable mode does—and what it does not do
Portable mode stores OBS configuration alongside the application instead of using the usual user-level configuration location. That can help keep a dedicated setup’s profiles and scene collections separate, or make the OBS folder easier to relocate.
It does not make the media in a scene collection portable. The OBS Project states: “At this time, files used within the scene collection (images, media) are not portable, even when in portable mode.” Keep the loop video at a stable path on the dedicated PC. If you move the OBS folder or use it on another device, update the media paths or ensure the same paths exist there.
The documented portable-mode workflow is for Windows and the OBS ZIP distribution. OBS says portable mode is not supported on macOS or Linux at this time.

Set up OBS portable mode on Windows
- Download the Windows ZIP build of OBS Studio. Extract it to a folder you control, ideally inside your user folder. Do not extract it into
Program Files. - Choose how to enable portable mode. For persistent behavior, create an empty file named
portable_modeorportable_mode.txtin the extracted OBS root folder—the same folder that contains thebindirectory. Alternatively, launch OBS with the--portableargument. - Launch the portable executable. Run
bin/64bit/obs64.exefrom the extracted folder. Confirm that the intended profile and scene collection load before configuring the stream. - Keep the folder and media path stable. Portable settings stay with the application folder, but referenced video and image files do not. Store the loop video somewhere that will remain available at the same path whenever OBS starts.
Marker file or launch flag?
The marker file makes portable mode the default for that extracted instance. The --portable flag is useful when you want to put the choice in a shortcut or automation command. Neither option changes how scene media paths work.
Make one video loop or build a playlist
Loop a single local video
- In OBS, create or select the scene for the stream.
- In the Sources panel, add a Media Source and select the local video file.
- In the source properties, enable Loop, then confirm the source is visible in the scene and positioned as intended.
- Play through the end of the file during testing to check that it restarts as expected on this PC. OBS documents the Loop setting but does not promise gapless playback for every file and machine.
Loop an ordered playlist
For multiple files, add a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. This method requires VLC to be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. VLC Video also provides shuffle and visibility behavior, so decide whether a fixed order or shuffled playback is appropriate before leaving the stream unattended.

Configure and test the stream before leaving the PC unattended
OBS does not have one universal bitrate that suits every service, resolution, and internet connection. Its guidance is to account for both available upload speed and the streaming service’s limits. Choose the correct service, server, stream key, and output settings for the destination, then run a short test rather than assuming a setting is suitable.
- Confirm the correct profile, scene collection, and scene are active.
- Check that the media file opens and loops, and that the scene shows the intended video.
- Watch the audio meters and confirm the intended audio is present. OBS’s Quick Start guidance recommends checking output settings and doing a short test before going live.
- Verify the streaming service, server, stream key, output settings, and upload capacity.
- Check that the service accepts the stream and that playback is stable before relying on the PC for a long session.
OBS identifies automatic reconnect as an Advanced setting, but its documentation does not establish a universal bitrate or an uptime guarantee. A reconnect option also does not replace testing the destination, internet connection, and machine you plan to use.

Start streaming from a shortcut or scheduled launch
OBS documents command-line options for portable mode and startup selection, including --portable (or -p), --startstreaming, --collection, --profile, and --scene. You can use these to request portable mode, select the configuration to load, and ask OBS to start streaming. The exact values for collection, profile, and scene must match the names in your OBS setup.
For a Windows shortcut or scheduled launch, set the working directory—Windows labels this Start in…—to the folder containing obs64.exe. OBS documents these launch controls, but not a complete unattended-PC setup: automatic Windows sign-in, power recovery after an outage, and watchdog monitoring are separate administration tasks. Test the actual shortcut or scheduled task on the target PC, including its working directory and stream destination, before depending on it.

Troubleshooting a portable loop-stream setup
