The YouTube Live Streaming API manages broadcast events and their video streams; your scheduler must define the rotation order, read the schedule, and call the appropriate API operations.
What “rotate” means in YouTube’s live API
Start by deciding what you want to rotate. In YouTube’s API model, a liveBroadcast is the event viewers see, while a liveStream is the video input sent to YouTube. A broadcast represents one YouTube video and can be bound to a stream. A broadcast can be bound to one stream, while a stream may be bound to more than one broadcast.
That model supports several different workflows, which should not be confused:
- Rotate among separate events: choose the next broadcast in a schedule, then manage its start and end lifecycle.
- Reuse a stream input: bind a stream to a broadcast when appropriate. Reusing or binding a stream does not itself define which event comes next.
- Switch video sources within one ongoing production: this is a different production problem from choosing among broadcast events. A JSON schedule alone does not switch a live input.
The API reference documents operations for creating, binding, listing, updating and transitioning broadcasts, and for creating, listing and updating streams. It does not define a playlist-rotation policy or a JSON schedule format; your application supplies both.

Choose a scheduling approach

There is no universally best choice. Consider how often the lineup changes, whether you need uninterrupted continuity between events, and who will monitor failures. A scheduler that controls broadcast events should not be assumed to provide seamless transitions between video sources.
Design a JSON schedule your program can validate
YouTube does not prescribe a JSON playlist schema. The following is an example application design for selecting among known broadcast and stream resources. Replace the illustrative IDs with real resource IDs from your channel; the example is not a YouTube API request format.

}For broadcasts, YouTube documents scheduled start and end times. If no scheduled end time is provided, YouTube treats the broadcast as continuing indefinitely. In your own schema, make an omitted end time mean something deliberate—such as “leave this event open-ended”—rather than letting it happen accidentally.
Use stable entry IDs, explicit ordering or a clearly defined recurrence rule, and ISO 8601 UTC timestamps ending in Z. UTC avoids ambiguous local times during daylight-saving changes. Before any API mutation, reject invalid timestamps, missing resource identifiers, duplicate IDs, overlapping or conflicting entries under your policy, and past entries if your workflow does not permit them.

Build the scheduler in deliberate steps
- Define the rotation policy. Decide whether the program chooses the next separate broadcast, reuses stream resources, or manages a continuously active production. Specify how it handles gaps, overlaps, missed start times, and open-ended events.
- Load and validate the JSON. Parse the file before calling YouTube. Check its structure, timestamp validity, identifiers, ordering and conflicts. Fail closed: a malformed schedule should not trigger partial resource changes.
- Authenticate for the intended channel. Use authorization appropriate to the selected API operations, and confirm that live streaming is enabled for the authorized user. API calls can fail when the account lacks live permissions or live streaming is not enabled.
- Resolve the resources and inspect current state. List relevant broadcasts or request known IDs, retrieve the resource parts your workflow needs, and check whether each event is upcoming, active, completed or otherwise suitable. The broadcast list operation requires authorization and a
partparameter plus exactly one ofbroadcastStatus,idormine. Its documented status filter acceptsactive,all,completedandupcoming. - Create or bind only when required. If your workflow creates a broadcast or binds a stream, first check whether the intended resource already exists and whether its current state permits the action. Do not assume that editing your JSON or changing a playlist changes YouTube’s live input automatically.
- Check readiness before lifecycle transitions. Inspect the bound stream and broadcast state before transitioning. The API guidance says to verify that the stream bound to a broadcast is active before transitioning that broadcast to
testing. Follow the documented lifecycle for the operation you intend, rather than treating a scheduled time as proof that a stream is ready. - Persist outcomes and make retries idempotent. Store the schedule-entry ID, resulting YouTube resource IDs and operation outcomes. On retry, look up existing resources instead of blindly creating another broadcast. Log failures and leave enough information for an operator to determine what happened.
- Test with a controlled event. Before relying on unattended rotation, verify the visible event, stream binding, timing, end behavior and recovery path on the actual channel and setup. Include cases such as expired credentials, a missing resource, a failed API call and a stream that is not active.
Monitor state instead of trusting the clock alone
A timer can tell your program when an entry is due; it cannot establish that YouTube accepted a request or that the stream is ready. A safer scheduler treats each action as a stateful operation:
- Record the intended schedule entry and the resource IDs involved.
- Read the relevant broadcast and stream state before attempting a transition.
- Make one mutation at a time and record its result before proceeding.
- After an API error, re-read state before retrying; the first request may have succeeded even if your scheduler did not receive a usable response.
- Alert an operator when state and schedule disagree, or when retries are exhausted.
This is application-level reliability guidance, not a guarantee that YouTube will automatically recover a failed stream or scheduler.

Common failures and how to respond
- Authorization or live-permission error: confirm that credentials authorize the intended channel, that the required API permissions are granted, and that live streaming is enabled for the account.
- Invalid list request: include the required
partparameter and use exactly one ofbroadcastStatus,idormine. - Transition rejected or event not ready: inspect broadcast state and verify the bound stream is active before transitioning to
testing. Do not infer readiness from the scheduled start time. - Duplicate broadcasts after a retry: persist resource IDs and check for an existing matching resource before creating another. Make retries idempotent in your own scheduler.
- Unexpectedly open-ended event: check whether a scheduled end time was supplied. YouTube treats a broadcast without one as continuing indefinitely.
- JSON entry does not change the live video: the schedule selects application actions; it is not itself a live-input switch. Confirm that your code performs the intended resource operations and that your production setup supplies the expected video input.
Copyright and channel policies still apply
Scheduling an event or automating API calls does not grant rights to the video or music being streamed. Use content you own or have permission to broadcast, and review YouTube’s current copyright and channel rules before scheduling a recurring lineup. A technically valid broadcast can still face claims, restrictions or other enforcement if its content violates applicable rules.
