Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a Linux playlist stream, add an OBS VLC Video Source, load the media files, and enable Loop Playlist. Set OBS to YouTube’s recommended encoder settings for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec, then test the full setup in YouTube Live Control Room. A looping source repeats media; it does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast.
1. Prepare OBS and VLC for playlist playback
OBS’s VLC Video Source provides playlist support and playback through VLC libraries. On Linux, VLC must be installed for this source to be available. Match its architecture to OBS: for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Open OBS and select the scene that will carry the playlist.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video Source. If it is not offered, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- Open the source’s properties, add the local media files to the playlist, and enable Loop Playlist.
- Preview the scene and confirm the playlist plays through, advances to the next item, and returns to the beginning.
For one repeating file rather than a list, add a Media Source and enable its Loop control. OBS lists support for formats such as MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV, but playback also depends on the installed playback stack and the file’s codecs. Test every file you plan to use instead of assuming its container guarantees reliable playback. See OBS’s media-source documentation.
2. Keep the source playing when scenes change
A source can stop when it becomes hidden. OBS documents the VLC Video Source’s default Visibility Behaviour as stopping playback when not visible and restarting when visible. If your stream switches scenes, inspect this setting in the VLC source properties and choose behavior appropriate to your scene setup. Then test a scene change: verify that playback resumes as intended and that the playlist has not reset or paused unexpectedly.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Set YouTube encoder options for the output you chose
For standard RTMP/RTMPS ingest, use YouTube’s encoder guidance and match the bitrate row to your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 values, not a promise that a particular computer or internet connection can sustain them:
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 34 Mbps |
In OBS’s output settings, select CBR for rate control and set the bitrate for the matching YouTube recommendation. YouTube’s guidance supports H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio, and up to 60 fps. It publishes separate bitrate recommendations for AV1 and H.265, so use the corresponding table when choosing either codec rather than applying the H.264 figures above. For standard RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval; it should not exceed 4 seconds. For SDR video, use Rec. 709. These are YouTube Help configuration recommendations; the page does not display a publication year. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport to its servers. Select the appropriate YouTube ingest server and stream key in OBS, and keep the key private. YouTube’s stream key connects OBS to the selected live stream; do not publish or share it.
4. Choose RTMPS or configure HLS separately
RTMPS and HLS are distinct output setups. Use RTMPS for the standard RTMP-style workflow described above. HLS is an alternative with different requirements and higher latency; do not copy its segment settings into an ordinary RTMP/RTMPS configuration.

| Setting | Standard RTMP/RTMPS | YouTube HLS |
|---|---|---|
| Transport | YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. | HTTPS POST/PUT is required. |
| Segments | HLS segment requirements do not apply. | Use 1–4-second segments in TS format. |
| Playlist | HLS playlist rules do not apply. | Use a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. |
| Latency | Use the settings for the selected standard ingest workflow. | Higher latency than the standard setup described here. |
YouTube lists OBS among encoders that support HLS output. Before selecting HLS, confirm that your chosen OBS output path provides the required segment format, rolling playlist, and HTTPS requests. See YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements.
5. Connect to YouTube and test before relying on the loop
- In YouTube Live Control Room, set up the intended live stream and copy its stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or select the matching stream key. Keep the key confidential.
- Confirm the video and audio in the OBS preview, then start a test stream and check that YouTube Live Control Room receives the expected picture and sound.
- Let representative media play long enough to confirm that the playlist advances and loops. Check clips with different movement and audio levels, not only a still or silent segment.
- Check that your upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate with headroom. YouTube advises testing before the live stream and monitoring stream health and messages while it runs.
YouTube transcodes incoming streams into multiple formats for viewers, but that does not compensate for an unstable or incorrectly configured source stream. The official guidance does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 uptime. A successful test confirms the path and settings at that time; it cannot establish that the stream will never disconnect.

6. Troubleshoot common playlist-stream failures
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC and verify it matches OBS’s architecture; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for this source to appear.
- Playlist stops after the last item: Open the VLC source properties and confirm Loop Playlist is enabled.
- Playback stops or restarts after a scene switch: Review the source’s Visibility Behaviour. Its documented default is to stop when hidden and restart when visible; test the setting that fits your scene changes.
- A file does not play or has missing audio: Test it in the chosen source and check its codecs and compatibility with the installed playback stack. A listed container or extension alone does not establish that every file will work reliably.
- YouTube reports unstable stream health: Compare OBS’s selected codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with the matching YouTube recommendation. Check available upload capacity and test again at a bitrate the connection can sustain.
- YouTube does not receive the expected stream: Confirm OBS is connected to the intended YouTube stream and that the selected key matches it. If using HLS, check its separate segment, playlist, and HTTPS requirements rather than applying them to RTMPS.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that stays live without leaving a Linux computer running, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Frequently Asked Questions
Can OBS keep a YouTube playlist running if the Linux computer is off?
No. OBS runs on the computer hosting it; the computer and its internet connection need to remain available for the OBS stream to continue.
