Set shuffle in the playback system feeding each live channel—not in a YouTube public playlist. With OBS, install VLC, give each channel its own VLC Video Source playlist, and enable Shuffle Playlist for each source. Turn on Loop Playlist if the media should repeat. Then send each channel’s playout to its own YouTube live stream.
Where playlist randomization belongs
A YouTube playlist organizes videos on YouTube. It does not, by itself, randomize the media sequence an encoder is sending as a live broadcast. Randomization must happen in the playout layer—the software or service choosing the next video before it reaches the live stream.
YouTube Studio’s playlist controls let channel owners arrange videos and drag entries into a different order, but its help documentation does not describe a persistent random-order control for separate 24/7 live outputs. See YouTube’s playlist help. OBS’s VLC Video Source, by contrast, documents a shuffle control for its media files.
Set up a separate shuffled playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video Source uses VLC libraries, so install VLC before configuring the source. OBS documents the source and its playlist controls at OBS: VLC Video Source.
- Create the scene for the first channel. In OBS, select the scene intended for that channel, add a VLC Video Source, and add that channel’s media files to its playlist.
- Enable shuffle and, if needed, looping. In the source properties, turn on Shuffle Playlist to randomize the media files rather than play them in listed order. Turn on Loop Playlist if playback should restart after the files finish. OBS describes these as separate controls; shuffle does not itself mean the playlist loops.
- Repeat for every channel. Make a distinct source or playout configuration for each channel, with that channel’s own media set and shuffle setting. Keep the outputs and their media libraries clearly associated so one channel does not accidentally use another’s playlist.
- Assign a separate YouTube stream to each channel. Configure the live output for the correct channel and use that channel’s stream configuration. YouTube’s Live Streaming API guide says multiple channels require a different stream for each channel: YouTube Live Streaming API: Getting Started.
- Check each output before leaving it unattended. Confirm the selected scene and channel, video playback, audio, and YouTube live status for every feed. Test each channel separately; the configuration above does not establish whether a particular computer can sustain multiple outputs.
What to expect from OBS shuffle
OBS documents shuffle as randomizing the files being played rather than keeping the file-list order. It does not specify an algorithm or promise that every pass will produce a different sequence. If you require a guaranteed sequence, curate and reorder the list yourself instead of relying on shuffle.

Shuffle is a setting on the VLC Video Source, so configure it independently for each channel’s source. YouTube’s API documentation establishes the need for separate stream resources across channels; it does not document a playlist-shuffle parameter.
Check YouTube live eligibility and content rights
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days to live stream. First-time activation can take at least 24 hours. Check the current eligibility and activation details in YouTube’s live-streaming help before planning a launch.

Random playback does not change your rights to the videos or music. Use media you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies. Repeated or reused material can also affect monetization eligibility; shuffling files is not a substitute for having the necessary rights or adding original value.
When a cloud playout service makes more sense
OBS with VLC keeps playback local: the computer, media storage, and output workflow must remain available. A hosted playout service can reduce the need to maintain local playback hardware, but verify shuffle behavior, continuous operation, output support, storage, number of channels, playlist limits, and current plan terms before choosing one.
